How Many Grams of Protein Do I Need on Mounjaro? (October 2026)

Your daily protein target on Mounjaro depends on your body weight, activity level and health, so there is no single gram figure that suits everyone. Include a protein source at every meal and do resistance exercise two or more times a week, because some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue.4 A dietitian or prescriber can turn that into a personal number. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • There is no one-size gram target: your weight, activity and health decide it, and a dietitian or prescriber can set a personal figure.
  • Aim to include a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low.
  • Resistance exercise protects muscle alongside protein, and matters more as the dose rises.
  • Fluids, a multivitamin safety net and smaller, slower meals all make eating enough protein easier.
  • Online calculators and social media targets are rough guides, so check anything unusual with your prescriber.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

How many grams of protein do I need on Mounjaro?

The honest answer is that it depends on you. Your target rises or falls with your body weight, how active you are, your age and any medical conditions.

Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The two levers are adequate protein — aim to include a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low — and resistance exercise two or more times a week.4 This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.

If you want a number, the best route is a registered dietitian or your prescriber. They can look at your starting weight, your goals and your health history. Many people also find that a rough personal target, set once and then tracked in a food diary or in the free GLPTrackr app, is enough to keep them on course.

02 · Your next step

Is this relevant to me, and what should I do next?

It is relevant if you are taking Mounjaro, or considering it, and you want to lose fat rather than muscle. The medicine is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so your food choices are part of the treatment rather than an extra.1

A sensible plan looks like this:

  • Build each meal around a protein food first, then add vegetables and fibre.
  • Keep protein snacks and drinks to hand for days when appetite is very low.
  • Add resistance work to your weekly routine, and keep brisk walking too.
  • Ask your prescriber or a dietitian to set a personal gram target if you want one.

If you are not yet a patient, you can start with a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber through our weight loss clinic. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and the Mounjaro pen page shows every dose. Prices checked 10 October 2026.

03 · Why protein matters

Why protein matters on GLP-1 medicines

Protein matters on Mounjaro because the medicine lowers appetite, and a smaller appetite makes it easy to under-eat protein without noticing. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

That is the point of the treatment, but it also means every meal has less room. When portions shrink, the foods that fill you up first are often the ones that do the least for muscle. Planning protein deliberately stops it from being squeezed out.

Our guide to why you need protein on GLP-1 medicines goes deeper on the reasoning. In short, protecting lean tissue protects strength, metabolism and how you look and feel at the end of the weight loss.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

04 · Hitting your target

How to get enough protein on a small appetite

The easiest way to reach your protein target is to put protein first on the plate and eat it before the rest. No food is banned on Mounjaro, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.4

Because the stomach empties more slowly, large portions sit heavily. Smaller, slower meals work better, and many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food.4 That shapes how you choose your protein sources.

Practical ideas that fit a low appetite include:

  • Eggs at breakfast, which are soft, quick and easy to eat in small portions.
  • Plain yoghurt or skyr with fruit as a light meal or snack.
  • Fish, chicken or turkey grilled, baked or poached rather than fried.
  • Beans, lentils and tofu if you eat less meat, which also add fibre.
  • Cottage cheese or milk-based drinks between meals when solid food feels like too much.

These answer the common question about the top protein foods: lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy, pulses and tofu all count. Choose the ones you can actually finish on a day when you feel full quickly.

On days when you cannot face a plate, a protein shake can bridge the gap. Watch the sugar and calorie content, because liquid calories are an easy place for the deficit to leak. Shakes are a back-up for bad days rather than a replacement for food.

05 · Reaching a high target

Struggling to reach a high protein target

If a dietitian or calculator has given you a high daily target and it feels impossible, spread it across the day rather than forcing it into a few large meals. Smaller, slower meals suit slower stomach emptying, and several protein-led mini meals are easier to tolerate than one big plate.4

A simple pattern works for most people. Start the day with a protein breakfast, add a protein-led lunch and evening meal, and fill gaps with a snack or drink that contains protein. Keep portion sizes modest and eat slowly, stopping when you feel comfortably full.

It also helps to prepare ahead. Boiled eggs, pre-cooked chicken, tinned fish and pots of yoghurt are ready in seconds, which matters when appetite is low and cooking feels like effort. Planning meals for the week removes the decision on days when you feel least like eating.

If nausea, constipation or early fullness keep getting in the way of eating at all, tell your prescriber. They can look at your dose and your side effects together, and this support is part of ongoing monthly reviews with us. Our related guides on how much protein per day on Mounjaro and GLP-1 protein per day cover the same question from other angles.

06 · Muscle and exercise

Protein, resistance exercise and keeping muscle

Protein alone does not protect muscle; it works best alongside resistance exercise. Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity (such as brisk walking) plus resistance work for muscle.4

Start where you are and build. Resistance work does not have to mean a gym membership; bodyweight exercises, resistance bands and light weights at home all count. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts.4

There is a longer-term reason too. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.4 Building the habit while the medicine is helping with appetite gives you something that lasts after treatment ends.

If you are weight training seriously, you may wonder whether your target should be higher. Some clinicians do adjust protein for very active people, but that is a decision to make with a dietitian or prescriber who knows your training, rather than from a rule of thumb online.

07 · Fluids and supplements

Fluids, vitamins and protein supplements

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual, and it affects how comfortable a higher-protein diet feels. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly — which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.4 Keep water within reach through the day.

Treat inability to keep fluids down as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through.4 If you have any kidney condition, speak to your prescriber or GP before making big changes to how much protein you eat.

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight; discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.4 Supplements sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.

On drinks, coffee and tea are fine, but strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak.4 Alcohol adds calories that work against your goals and can hit harder on an emptier stomach.

08 · Too little or too much

Signs you are not eating enough protein, or too much

Symptoms such as tiredness or weakness have many causes on a weight loss programme. The useful approach is to watch the overall picture and bring concerns to a professional rather than self-diagnose from a list.

Things worth raising with your prescriber include feeling unusually weak, noticing your strength falling as you lose weight, struggling to eat anything at all, or being unable to keep fluids down. Because the medicine lowers appetite, it is easy to under-eat protein, so aim to include a protein source at every meal.4

If you have an existing medical condition, particularly one affecting the kidneys, ask before raising your protein substantially. If you have had weight loss surgery, your surgical team or dietitian will have given you specific protein advice that takes priority over general web guidance.

Report any new or unexpected symptom to your prescriber, and you can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

09 · Using calculators

Protein calculators and online targets

Protein calculators for Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy give a quick estimate, but treat the result as a starting point rather than a prescription. They usually multiply your body weight by a fixed factor, and they cannot see your health conditions, your training or your appetite.

You will also see very different targets quoted on forums and social media, and people sharing what they eat are describing their own bodies. Use those posts for meal ideas, not for your own number. The same caution applies to anyone telling you strict "rules" for eating on treatment, as many have no clinical basis.

If you want a target you can trust, ask a registered dietitian, or raise it at your monthly review with the prescribing team. Our guides on how much protein you need on Mounjaro and daily protein on Mounjaro also walk through how to think about your own figure.

10 · If you stop treatment

Protein habits and what happens after treatment

Good protein habits are worth keeping even if you stop Mounjaro, because they support the weight you have lost. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system; there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

As appetite returns, the habits you built, such as protein at every meal, regular resistance work and good hydration, give you structure when the medicine is no longer doing some of the work. This is one reason we encourage people to build the routine early rather than leave it until the end of treatment.

NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years, with NICE recommending it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How many grams of protein do I need on Mounjaro?
It depends on your body weight, activity and health, so there is no single figure for everyone. Include a protein source at every meal and do resistance exercise regularly. A dietitian or your prescriber can set a personal gram target based on your starting weight and goals.
How many grams of protein do I need on tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is the medicine in Mounjaro, so the advice is the same: your target depends on your size, activity and health. Include protein at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low, and add resistance exercise. Ask a dietitian or prescriber for a personal figure rather than relying on a generic number.
How can I reach a high daily protein target when I have no appetite?
Spread protein across the day in smaller, slower meals and snacks, and eat the protein part of the meal first. Eggs, yoghurt, fish, chicken, pulses and tofu are easy options. A shake can help on difficult days, but watch the calories. If you cannot eat at all, tell your prescriber.
Why is protein important when taking Mounjaro?
Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. Because Mounjaro lowers appetite, protein is easy to under-eat. Adequate protein and resistance exercise are the two ways to protect muscle, and this matters more as the dose rises and appetite falls.
What are the best protein foods on Mounjaro?
Lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils and tofu are all good choices. Pick the ones you can finish in a small portion, and choose grilled, baked or poached over fried, since very fatty or fried food makes many people feel worse. Pairing protein with vegetables and fibre works well.
Are protein shakes a good idea on Mounjaro?
Protein shakes can help on days when solid food feels like too much, but they work best as a back-up rather than a replacement for meals. Check the sugar and calorie content, because liquid calories can undermine your deficit. Ask a pharmacist if you are unsure which product suits you.
Should I take supplements with Mounjaro?
No supplement is required, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
Do I need a different protein target after weight loss surgery?
Yes, if you have had weight loss surgery, follow the advice from your surgical team or dietitian, as it is tailored to your procedure and recovery. General web guidance should not override it. If you are also taking Mounjaro, tell your prescriber about your surgery.
