In this guide

01 · The short answer

What are good foods to eat on Mounjaro?

Good foods on Mounjaro are the ones that give you the most nourishment from a smaller appetite: protein, vegetables, fibre and fluids. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective.1 Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.1

Food groupExamplesWhy it helps on Mounjaro
ProteinEggs, chicken, turkey, white fish, salmon, tofu, beans, lentils, Greek yoghurtSupports muscle and keeps you full when appetite is low
VegetablesLeafy greens, broccoli, peppers, courgette, tomatoes, carrotsVolume and fibre for few calories
Fibre-rich carbohydratesOats, brown rice, quinoa, wholemeal pasta, sweet potato, pulsesSteady energy and better digestion
Healthy fats (small portions)Olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocadoFlavour and satisfaction without heavy, greasy meals
FluidsWater, herbal tea, coffee and tea without heavy sweetenersLess fluid comes from food when you eat less

The examples are practical suggestions rather than a prescribed menu. Your prescriber or pharmacist can tailor them if you have allergies, other conditions or other medicines.

02 · Is this a strict diet?

Do you need a special diet on Mounjaro?

You do not need a special or restrictive diet, but you do need a sensible one. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list.1

Mounjaro helps most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports eating less.1 Your job is to make the smaller amount you eat count. For more detail, see our complete Mounjaro diet guide.

If you are still deciding whether treatment is right for you, our weight loss clinic explains how a free online consultation works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live prices and availability.

03 · Protein first

Why protein comes first on Mounjaro

Protein comes first because it protects muscle while your appetite is reduced. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.1

The practical challenge is that protein is harder to eat when you are not hungry. Aim to include a protein source at every meal. This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.1

A simple way to do this is to start each meal with the protein, then add vegetables and a modest portion of carbohydrate. If you fill up quickly, you will have eaten the most important part first.

  • Breakfast: eggs, Greek yoghurt with berries, or porridge made with milk alongside a protein source.
  • Lunch: chicken, tuna or lentil salad, or a bean soup with a slice of wholemeal bread.
  • Dinner: baked white fish or salmon with vegetables, or a tofu and vegetable stir-fry with a little rice.
  • Snacks: cottage cheese, a boiled egg, hummus with vegetable sticks, or a small handful of nuts.

Protein alone is only half of the muscle-protection picture. The other lever is resistance exercise.

04 · Vegetables and fibre

Vegetables, fibre and fruit

Vegetables and fibre give your plate bulk and nutrients without piling on calories. They are part of the core advice: prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.1

Choose a mix: leafy greens, broccoli, peppers, courgette, tomatoes and carrots all work. Fibre-rich carbohydrates such as oats, brown rice, quinoa, wholemeal pasta, sweet potato, beans and lentils round out the meal. Because the stomach empties more slowly, add fibre-heavy foods gradually rather than all at once if you find them bloating.

Fruit is not off limits. Whole fruit brings fibre and fluid, and no food is banned, bananas included.1 We cover it in more depth in our guide on whether fruit is good to eat on Mounjaro.

If you prefer a ready-made reference, our list of foods to eat while on Mounjaro sets out options by meal and food group.

05 · Foods to ease off

Foods that can make Mounjaro harder

The foods most likely to make you feel worse are very fatty, fried or very sugary ones. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly — smaller, slower meals work better.1

Notice the wording: this is about how you feel, not a ban. You do not need to give up crisps, biscuits, cheese or a takeaway for ever. Instead:

  • Keep portions small, especially of rich or fried food.
  • Eat slowly and stop when you feel comfortably full.
  • Pay attention to which foods sit badly for you, and eat less of those.
  • Avoid eating a large meal late at night when you already feel full.

Some foods are also easy places for calories to creep back in without filling you up. Sugary drinks, large coffee-shop drinks and snacking foods are the usual examples, which matters because the treatment relies on a calorie deficit.

If a particular meal makes you feel unwell, that is useful information. Make a note of it, and tell your prescribing team if side effects are persistent or hard to manage.

06 · Fluids, coffee and alcohol

Fluids, coffee, tea and alcohol

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly — which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.1 Keep water within reach through the day.

If you cannot keep fluids down, treat it as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through.1

Coffee and tea: there is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. Coffee rules circulating on social media have no clinical basis.1

Alcohol: there is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule.1

07 · Exercise and muscle

Food works best with movement

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra.1 Nothing special is required: regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle.

Resistance exercise and protein are the two levers for protecting muscle during weight loss. Start where you are and build. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts.

Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

08 · Supplements and gaps

Do you need vitamins or supplements?

No supplement is required with Mounjaro. Eating much less can leave gaps, though, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight — discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.1

Be wary of products marketed as natural boosters. Supplements sold as natural gut-hormone boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.1

Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.1 If you take other medicines, ask your pharmacist how best to time them.

09 · Enjoying food on treatment

How to keep enjoying food on Mounjaro

Enjoying food on Mounjaro comes down to quality over quantity: smaller portions of food you genuinely like, eaten slowly. Because the stomach empties more slowly, smaller, slower meals work better.1

  • Plate the protein first so the most useful food gets eaten while you are still comfortable.
  • Choose flavour over bulk. Herbs, spices, citrus and good seasoning make small portions satisfying.
  • Plan ahead. When appetite is low, having simple options ready stops you grabbing whatever is easiest.
  • Treat favourites as occasional, not forbidden. No food is banned, so there is no need for guilt around a biscuit or a few crisps.
  • Track how you feel. Our free GLPTrackr companion app is available for tracking your journey on iOS and Android.

10 · When food advice is not enough

Getting support with eating and side effects

If eating becomes difficult, speak to your prescribing team rather than managing alone. An inability to keep fluids down is the clearest example, and it should be treated as a contact-your-clinical-team issue.1

Our customers receive ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Treatment is only supplied after a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

On the NHS, Mounjaro is available but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you are weighing up other options, our guides on weight loss medication in the UK and the orlistat diet guide explain how food advice differs for another licensed option.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the secret to enjoying food while on Mounjaro?
Eat smaller portions of food you genuinely like, slowly, and put protein on the plate first. Smaller, slower meals work better because the stomach empties more slowly. No food is banned, so favourites can stay as occasional treats. Good seasoning makes small portions satisfying, and planning simple meals ahead helps when appetite is low.
How can I speed up weight loss on Mounjaro?
There is no safe shortcut. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so the reliable levers are protein at every meal, regular moderate activity such as brisk walking, and resistance exercise for muscle. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and individual results vary. Never change your dose yourself; speak to your prescriber.
What is a good breakfast while on Mounjaro?
A good breakfast puts protein first, since protein at each meal is the core advice. Eggs, Greek yoghurt with berries, or porridge alongside a protein source all work. Keep the portion modest and eat slowly. If mornings are when you feel nauseous, try something small and plain, and drink fluids through the morning.
Can you eat crisps on Mounjaro?
Yes, no food is banned on Mounjaro. Crisps are fatty and easy to overeat though, and many people feel worse after very fatty or fried food. Keep to a small portion, eat slowly, and see how you feel. They add calories without much fullness, which works against the calorie deficit treatment relies on.
Can I eat a biscuit on Mounjaro?
Yes, a biscuit is not banned. Very sugary food can leave some people feeling worse, and it adds calories without protein or fibre. An occasional biscuit with a cup of tea is fine for most people. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list.
Can I eat cheese on Mounjaro?
Yes, cheese is not banned. It can be a useful protein source, but it is also rich, and very fatty food makes many people feel worse while the stomach empties more slowly. Choose small portions, pair it with vegetables or wholemeal bread, and eat slowly. Notice how you feel and adjust accordingly.
What foods worsen Mounjaro's side effects?
Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. Strong coffee on an empty stomach can also aggravate nausea or reflux for some people. Smaller, slower meals and regular fluids help. If side effects persist, contact your prescribing team.
What happens if you eat too little on Mounjaro?
Eating much less can leave nutritional gaps, and rapid weight loss can include loss of lean tissue, which protein and resistance exercise help protect. Reduced eating also means less fluid from food, so keep drinking. A daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net. If you are struggling to eat or drink, contact your clinical team.
What are the dos and don'ts when taking Mounjaro?
Do eat protein at every meal, add vegetables and fibre, drink regularly, keep active and include resistance exercise. Do eat smaller, slower meals. Don't treat any food as banned, but ease off very fatty, fried or very sugary food. Don't rely on natural booster supplements, and don't push through if you cannot keep fluids down.
