A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, speak to your prescriber before your next GLP-1 dose.
-
Tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after a final dose, and nothing speeds this up.
-
Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase.
-
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and trying to conceive all need a personal conversation with a clinician, not a web page.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Can you be on GLP-1 while pregnant?
The honest answer is that you should not make this decision alone. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.
If you are pregnant on a GLP-1 medicine, the practical route is the same whichever brand you use: contact the clinician who prescribed it, tell them the date of your last dose, and ask what they advise before any further injection.
02 · What to do next
Which situation are you in?
What you do next depends on where you are. This table gives the sensible first step for each case.
| Your situation | First step |
|---|---|
| You have a positive pregnancy test while on Mounjaro | Contact your prescriber before the next dose. Tell them your last injection date. Book routine antenatal care with your GP or midwife. |
| You think you might be pregnant | Take a test, and speak to your prescriber before your next injection if it is positive or you are unsure. |
| You are trying to conceive | Tell your prescriber before you start trying. Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. |
| You are breastfeeding or plan to | Ask your prescriber before starting or restarting. |
| You are not pregnant but sexually active | Discuss reliable contraception with your prescriber. If you use the pill, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. |
03 · How long it stays
How long tirzepatide stays in your system
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 That is useful if you are planning ahead: stopping is not instant, which is why planning a pregnancy with your prescriber matters.
If you are still deciding whether treatment is right for you, our weight loss clinic explains how a consultation works, and a prescriber will ask about pregnancy plans as part of it.

04 · Contraception
Contraception and GLP-1 medicines
Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives, because it slows how quickly the stomach empties.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Ask your prescriber which method suits you while you are on treatment. This applies to the pill only; implants, coils and injections are unaffected.
The slower stomach emptying comes from the way the medicine works: tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows gastric emptying.1
05 · Accidental pregnancy
What to do if you get pregnant on a GLP-1
Stay calm and act in order. First, take a test if you have missed a period and are unsure. Second, contact your prescriber and give them your last injection date and current dose. Third, arrange antenatal care with your GP or midwife and tell them which medicine you used and when.
Do not try to work out the answer from forums.
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after the final dose,1 and telling your clinicians the exact timing is helpful. If you have any new or worrying symptoms, you can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

06 · Other GLP-1 brands
Ozempic, Wegovy and other GLP-1 brands
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine. Wegovy and Mounjaro each have their own leaflet, so check the one that matches your pen.
The principle is the same for all of them: pregnancy, planning a pregnancy and breastfeeding are conversations for your prescriber. Our guides on weight loss medication while pregnant and weight loss injections while pregnant cover the wider picture.
07 · Fertility and planning
Planning a pregnancy after weight loss treatment
Many people start treatment because weight is affecting their health, and some hope it will help with starting a family.
Tell your prescriber early if a pregnancy is possible in the near future. They can talk through timing, contraception in the meantime, and what to do before you stop. Do not stop or restart treatment without that conversation.
Treatment is also meant to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1 Planning for a healthy diet before conception is something your GP or midwife can support.
08 · Hair and exercise
Hair shedding and exercise on GLP-1
Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. For most people it settles as weight stabilises. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.13
If shedding worries you, mention it at your monthly review.
Gentle activity is also worth keeping going when energy is low in the first weeks after a dose increase.13 If you are pregnant, ask your midwife what activity is right for you.
09 · Safety reminder
When to seek urgent help
Whether or not you are pregnant, some symptoms need immediate attention on Mounjaro. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.13
If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, because dehydration needs medical help straight away.13 This matters even more if you are pregnant or may be, so do not wait for your next review.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
