01 · The price answer

How much will GLP-1 pills cost in the UK?

The cost depends on the tablet, the dose and the pharmacy. Two GLP-1 tablets are now licensed in the UK for weight management: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. The live price for each is on its own page: see current prices for the Wegovy pill and for Foundayo (orforglipron).

What you can plan around is the structure of the cost. Both tablets start on a low dose and step up, so your monthly cost may change as you move through the dose steps. Wegovy tablets start at 1.5mg once daily and step up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose.²⁰ Foundayo starts at 0.8mg, steps to 2.5mg and 5.5mg, then to 9mg, 14.5mg or 17.2mg depending on response and tolerability, with at least 30 days at each dose.²¹

02 · Pills vs injection

Will GLP-1 pills be cheaper than injections?

A tablet is not automatically cheaper than a pen, because the price depends on the product, the dose and the supplier. Compare the actual monthly price at the dose you expect to use, using the live pages, then add what the routine costs you in practice.

The Mounjaro side of that comparison is fully priced. Each pen is four weekly doses, and the standard price rises with the dose. 03 · Planning the year

Planning a year of cost: the Mounjaro reference point

If you are weighing tablets against the injection, it helps to know the full-year Mounjaro numbers. At standard prices, the first four pens (at 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg) cost £959.96. A first year of 52 weeks (13 pens) costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg.

These are standard prices before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 less. To compare fairly, take a tablet's live monthly price at its maintenance dose, multiply by twelve, and set it beside the Mounjaro maintenance dose you are likely to need. Then consider how well you can follow the routine, because a medicine you cannot take consistently is not good value at any price.

05 · Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets: dosing, results and what drives cost

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day. They are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.²⁰

Treatment starts at 1.5mg once daily and steps up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose. The dose can stay at an earlier step if needed.²⁰ For cost, that means the price you pay can change as you move up, and the step you stay on affects your long-term monthly bill. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo. In that trial 76.3% lost at least 5% of their body weight and 59.8% lost at least 10%. These are trial averages and individual results vary.²²

The routine is strict. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.²⁰

06 · Foundayo (orforglipron)

Foundayo (orforglipron): dosing, results and cost factors

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro. Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions. The tablet is swallowed whole.²¹

It is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Treatment starts at 0.8mg once daily, then steps up to 2.5mg and 5.5mg, and then to 9mg, 14.5mg or 17.2mg depending on response and tolerability. There are at least 30 days at each dose, and 17.2mg once daily is the maximum.²¹

Because the final dose depends on how you respond, your long-term monthly cost is not fixed when you start.

In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo. The two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%. The trial used capsules, and the UK 17.2mg tablet corresponds to the highest trial dose, so tablet and capsule doses are not comparable milligram for milligram.²³ In the trial, 10.3% of people on the highest dose stopped because of side effects, compared with 2.7% on placebo.²³

One cost-adjacent practical point: Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective. Switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.²¹⁷ Read more on side effects of GLP-1 pills. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, speak to your prescriber before starting any GLP-1 treatment. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive; if you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

07 · Tablets vs Mounjaro

GLP-1 tablets versus Mounjaro: how to compare

There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, because tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.¹ Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection; Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily tablets. No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so results from separate trials, with different people, durations and doses, should not be set against each other as if they were head to head.

The one direct comparison we have is for the injections. In SURMOUNT-5, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).¹⁵ In SURMOUNT-1, people on tirzepatide lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. Individual results vary.²

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg, but that is a trial average and not a forecast of your own result. Effect size is only part of value for money. The practical differences matter as much: Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week. A prescriber will check which option suits your health, your other medicines and your routine.

If cost is your main worry, the useful question is what you pay per month at your likely maintenance dose, and whether you can keep taking it for as long as you need to.

08 · Prescription and OTC

Do you need a prescription, and can you buy GLP-1 pills over the counter?

Yes, you need a prescription, and you cannot buy GLP-1 weight-loss pills over the counter. Both licensed GLP-1 tablets, Wegovy tablets (approved by the MHRA in June 2026) and Foundayo (approved in August 2026), are prescription-only medicines.²⁰²¹

Anything sold as a GLP-1 pill without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign. Products sold online as "natural GLP-1" supplements, such as berberine, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their low cost is a reason for caution, not a saving on a licensed treatment. Supplement dosing is not standardised.

09 · Avoiding fake supply

Avoiding fakes when you are looking for a lower price

The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.⁷

Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, and never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites. The same logic applies to tablets. A price far below what registered pharmacies charge, or any seller who offers to supply without a consultation or prescription, is not a bargain.

10 · Cutting cost safely

Ways to keep costs down safely, and ways not to

The safe levers are the ordinary ones. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the Mounjaro price for the same dose can differ. As of October 2026, the gap between providers for the same dose ranges from £27 to £41 (checked 11 October 2026). Starting pens across those pharmacies run from £143.96 to £179.99, and Boots' Mounjaro prices run from £179.00 to £339.00. It is worth comparing like with like before you buy.

11 · NHS access

What about the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

For Wegovy, NHS access runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. For the new tablets, ask your GP or local service about NHS access. If you are on an NHS prescription for a different medicine, the England charge is £9.90 per item, but that does not apply to private weight-loss treatment.

Reading reviews and setting expectations

Reviews can tell you about service and delivery, but they cannot tell you what a medicine will do for you. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
