GLP-1 Shopping List for Mounjaro Users (October 2026)
A GLP-1 shopping list should be built around protein at every meal, gentle fibre, plenty of fluids and a few easy snacks, because treatment slows stomach emptying and lowers appetite.1 No food is banned on Mounjaro, but small, slower meals usually feel better than large, fatty or very sugary ones. This list is current as of October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Buy a protein source for every meal first; it is harder to reach when appetite is low.
-
Choose gentle fibre and vegetables, and keep water within reach all day.
-
No food is banned, but very fatty, fried or very sugary food sits badly for many people.
-
Stock small, easy snacks and a few low-effort meals for days with early side effects.
-
Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents of prescribed treatment.

01 · The short answer
What should be on a GLP-1 shopping list?
The list that works best starts with protein, adds vegetables, fruit and fibre, and finishes with fluids and a few gentle snacks. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.13 Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list.
If you want a longer reference, our Mounjaro food list and the GLP-1 food list go through individual foods in more detail.
02 · What to do next
Is this list relevant to you?
It is relevant if you are taking, or considering, a GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide). The shop changes because your appetite changes: portions shrink, and nausea or early fullness can make cooking feel like a chore. Planning ahead means you are not relying on whatever is closest when you do not feel like eating.
If you are still deciding on treatment, our weight loss clinic explains how a free online consultation works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live prices and doses.
03 · At a glance
The list at a glance
| Aisle | Good choices | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | Greek yogurt, skyr, cottage cheese, eggs, cooked chicken, tinned fish, tofu, edamame, ready-to-drink protein shakes | Helps protect muscle when appetite is low |
| Fruit and veg | Berries, apples, pears, salad bags, frozen vegetables, soup vegetables | Gentle fibre and fluid with few calories |
| Carbohydrates | Oats, wholegrain bread, rice cakes, potatoes, lentils and pulses | Fibre and steady energy in small portions |
| Drinks | Water, squash, herbal tea, clear broth, coffee and tea in moderation | Fluids matter more when you eat less |
| Snacks | Yogurt pots, boiled eggs, nuts in small portions, hummus with veg sticks, wholegrain crackers | Small, easy options for low-appetite days |
| Go easy on | Deep-fried food, rich sauces, very sugary sweets, large takeaway portions | Many people feel worse after them |

04 · Protein first
Protein to buy first
Protein is the first thing to put in the basket, because some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The practical rule is to include a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low.13 It matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.
Good low-effort options include:
- Greek yogurt or skyr: soft, cold and easy on a sensitive stomach.
- Cottage cheese: works in very small portions.
- Eggs: boil a batch ahead for the week.
- Cooked chicken: pre-cooked or grilled strips save effort on tired days.
- Tinned tuna or salmon: no cooking needed.
- Tofu or edamame: useful plant-based protein.
- Ready-to-drink protein shakes: helpful when solid food is unappealing.
Check labels on shakes and flavoured yogurts for added sugar, since very sugary food bothers many people on treatment.
05 · Fibre, fruit and veg
Fruit, vegetables and fibre
Vegetables and fibre are the second priority, because they add volume and nutrients without many calories.13 Large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so go gently rather than loading up on huge raw salads in a single sitting.
Easy choices include berries, apples and pears for grab-and-go fruit, plus bagged salad, carrots, cucumber and peppers for snacking. Frozen vegetables are an excellent standby: they keep, they need no chopping and they go into soups, omelettes and stir-fries in minutes. Tinned pulses and lentils add fibre and some protein to soups and stews.
If a particular vegetable or a big bowl of raw food leaves you bloated, cook it until soft instead. Soups and well-cooked dishes are often easier than raw food when you feel full quickly.
06 · Drinks and hydration
Drinks and hydration
Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual, because reduced appetite means less fluid from food. Vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class of medicine. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.13 Keep water within reach through the day.
Stock still or sparkling water, sugar-free squash, herbal teas and clear broths. If you are unable to keep fluids down, treat that as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through.
Coffee and tea are fine, as there is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. The "coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.
On alcohol, there is no direct interaction, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule.
07 · Snacks and sweets
Snacks, crackers and sweets
The best snack is small, contains some protein and does not need preparing. No single snack reduces belly fat; weight change comes from a sustainable calorie deficit alongside activity, not from one magic food.
Snacks that suit smaller appetites:
- Yogurt or skyr pots, or a small pot of cottage cheese
- Boiled eggs
- Hummus with carrot or cucumber sticks
- A small handful of nuts, kept to a modest portion
- Fruit such as berries, apples or pears
- Wholegrain crackers or rice cakes with a protein topping such as cottage cheese, tuna or nut butter
For crackers, look for wholegrain or seeded types with a short ingredient list, and pair them with protein rather than eating them alone.
On sweets, no food is banned on Mounjaro, but many people feel worse after very sugary food.13 Berries with yogurt, a square of dark chocolate or a small portion of your favourite treat usually go down better than a big dessert. Many people also find cravings change on treatment, so you may need to buy fewer sweet items than before.
08 · Foods to limit
What to limit, and why
You do not need to cut anything out completely, but some choices make treatment harder. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly.13 Smaller, slower meals work better.
In the supermarket, that means being cautious with:
- Deep-fried food and greasy takeaways
- Rich, creamy or heavily buttered ready meals
- Large multipack sweets and biscuits that are easy to overeat
- Sugary drinks and high-calorie coffee drinks
Bananas are not off limits either. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, and rigid food rules tend to be harder to keep up than flexible ones.
09 · Supplements and natural GLP-1
Supplements and "natural GLP-1" products
No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.13
Products sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. Food can support your own gut hormones in a general way, but nothing on a shelf replicates what a prescribed GLP-1 medicine does. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.
If you are weighing up medicines, see our overview of the GLP-1 drugs list for how the licensed options differ.
10 · Planning your week
Planning a week of meals
A simple menu plan keeps the shop small and cuts waste. Think in building blocks rather than recipes: a protein, a vegetable and a modest portion of carbohydrate at each meal, in a smaller portion than you used to eat.
| Meal | Easy ideas |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | Greek yogurt with berries; eggs on wholegrain toast; porridge with a protein shake alongside |
| Lunch | Tuna and salad wrap; chicken and vegetable soup; cottage cheese with fruit |
| Dinner | Baked fish with vegetables; tofu stir-fry; lentil stew; omelette with salad |
| Low-appetite days | Protein shake, yogurt, soup, boiled eggs, soft fruit |
Buy less fresh produce than you think you need and lean on frozen and tinned items so nothing is wasted if your appetite dips after an injection. Our Mounjaro shopping guide covers more ideas for building a routine.
For context on why diet matters, in the SURMOUNT-1 trial of adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages; individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
11 · Movement and next steps
Movement alongside the shopping
Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity (such as brisk walking) plus resistance work for muscle.13 Start where you are and build; on injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts.
Food and movement work together to protect muscle. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
