04 · Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets: how they work and what to expect

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, taken once a day. Treatment starts at 1.5mg and steps up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose.20 They must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.20

In OASIS 4, adults on 25mg for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of body weight versus 2.2% on placebo; individual results vary.22 See our Novo GLP-1 pill guide.

05 · Foundayo

Foundayo (orforglipron): the Lilly tablet

Foundayo is a once-daily tablet that can be taken at any time, with or without food and without water restrictions. It starts at 0.8mg and the maximum is 17.2mg daily.21 In ATTAIN-1, people on the highest dose for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of body weight versus 0.9% on placebo; individual results vary.23

Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21

06 · Pill or injection

Pill or injection: why price is not the whole picture

No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so separate trial results should not be set against each other. SURMOUNT-5 is the trial that compared tirzepatide directly with injected semaglutide.15 Practical differences matter: Wegovy tablets need a strict morning routine, Foundayo has no food rules, and Mounjaro is one injection a week. 07 · Avoiding fakes

Avoid cheap sellers without a prescription

The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens, and fake pens have caused hospitalisations. Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media or unverified websites. Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.7 Supplements marketed as "natural GLP-1" are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.

What GLP-1 tablets are available in the UK?
Two are licensed for weight management: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, approved by the MHRA in June 2026) and Foundayo (orforglipron, approved in August 2026). Both are prescription-only. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro; tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.
Will the GLP-1 pill be cheaper than the injection?

Which GLP-1 tablet suits me?

Who cannot take GLP-1?
Suitability is decided by a prescriber, who reviews your BMI, medical history and current medicines. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. The tablets are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with a weight-related condition. Foundayo may reduce the effect of oral contraceptive pills: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.
How much weight can I lose in 3 months on GLP-1?
Trials report averages over longer periods, not three months, and trial averages do not predict your own result. On Mounjaro, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder at three months, and a sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
