GLP-1 Peptide Prescription Requirements and Regulations in the UK (October 2026)

In the UK, licensed GLP-1 weight-loss medicines such as Mounjaro are prescription-only and supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. For weight management you need a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition.1 Unlicensed "research peptides" such as retatrutide have no UK licence. Our first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Prices checked 11 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • GLP-1 weight-loss injections are prescription-only medicines: a prescriber must assess you before anything is supplied.
  • Licensed weight-management use needs a BMI of 30+, or 27–30 with at least one weight-related condition.
  • "Peptide" is a marketing word; what matters is whether the product holds a UK licence and a regulated supply chain.
  • Retatrutide and compounded copies have no UK licence and no safety data for combining with Mounjaro.
  • NHS access is phased in over several years, so many eligible adults use a regulated private pathway.
In this guide

01 · The short version

What you need to get a GLP-1 prescription in the UK

You need three things: a clinical reason that matches the medicine's licence, an assessment by a qualified prescriber, and a supply from a registered pharmacy. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

For weight management the licensed criteria are a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.1 You can read the full breakdown in our guide to Mounjaro prescription requirements, and a wider view in weight loss medication prescription requirements.

There is no route to a licensed GLP-1 medicine that skips the prescriber. A seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is operating outside the regulated system, whatever it calls the product.

02 · Know the difference

Licensed medicine or research peptide: how they compare

QuestionLicensed GLP-1 medicine (e.g. Mounjaro)"Research peptide" (e.g. retatrutide)

Supply chainRegistered pharmacy, genuine pens from the manufacturerNo regulated supply chain
Safety data for combiningDo not combine with other GLP-1 medicines or compounded copies1No safety data

The practical test is simple. Can you find the seller on the GPhC register, and does it ask for a prescriber's review before dispensing? If either answer is no, walk away.

03 · Getting started

What a regulated private prescription costs

Your consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid. A first Mounjaro pen at 2.5mg costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). That is a first-order price. Every later order is £25 off the standard price, applied automatically (code DOSE25). Switching from another provider at a higher dose? Your first 15mg order is £289.99, and the new-customer discount applies at any dose.

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices, before the new-customer and reorder discounts. Ready to begin? Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. The prescription route is the same whether you are new to treatment or comparing options: assessment first, supply second.

04 · Who can prescribe

Who can prescribe GLP-1 medicines in the UK?

A GLP-1 weight-loss medicine must be prescribed by a qualified prescriber and dispensed by a registered pharmacy. In practice that means your GP, a specialist weight-management service, or a GPhC-registered prescriber working through a regulated online pharmacy. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1

Prescribing is a clinical act. A prescriber looks at your history, weighs the benefits against the risks, and takes professional responsibility for the decision. Selling is a regulated retail act. A pharmacy must be registered, and its premises, staff and processes are inspected. A legitimate supplier does both properly, and you can check the pharmacy side yourself on the GPhC public register.12

What a good consultation looks like

A proper consultation is a clinical conversation, not a checkout. Expect questions about your weight and height, other conditions, every medicine you take, and your previous attempts at weight management. Our process begins with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. It is then reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

What a poor one looks like

Be wary of any site that lists a dose, takes payment and ships without a clinician reviewing your answers. Be equally wary of sellers who describe a product as a "supplement", a "research chemical" or "not for human consumption" while giving injection advice. Those labels exist to sidestep the prescription rules, and they remove the protections those rules give you: assessment, a traceable pharmacy, and a route to report problems.

Why repeat orders are checked too

Prescribing is not a one-off event. Your suitability can change as your weight, medicines and health change. That is why repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping, and why our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support.

In short: the person prescribing should be accountable, the pharmacy dispensing should be on a public register, and the two should be able to talk to you before and after you start treatment.

05 · Eligibility criteria

Who qualifies for a GLP-1 weight-loss prescription?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

Reading the two routes

The first route is straightforward: a BMI of 30 or above. The second is for people with a BMI between 27 and 30 who also have a weight-related condition. The licence does not set a single universal rule beyond these. The decision rests with the prescriber, who assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether treatment is suitable.1

That last point matters. Meeting a BMI number opens the door to an assessment; it does not oblige a prescriber to say yes. A prescriber can decline when the picture does not fit, and a responsible pharmacy accepts that outcome. If the prescriber decides treatment is not suitable, your order is refunded automatically in full.

Adults only, and alongside lifestyle change

The licensed use is for adults. Treatment is not a replacement for eating and activity changes; it is designed to support a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.2

A worked example

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is straight arithmetic on a trial average, not a prediction for any individual. Your own result depends on many factors that a trial average cannot capture.

If you do not meet the criteria

If your BMI is below 27, or between 27 and 30 with no weight-related condition, you fall outside the licensed weight-management criteria. Be cautious about anyone willing to supply anyway. A pharmacy that does not apply the licence is not applying the safeguards behind it. Our free consultation will tell you where you stand, and our guide to all weight loss treatments explains the other options.

06 · NHS and private

NHS versus private prescribing

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years.

What this means in practice

The NHS thresholds are narrower than the licence. The licensed criteria start at a BMI of 30, or 27 with a weight-related condition. NICE's recommendation is for a BMI of at least 35 plus a condition, and the first NHS groups are narrower still. Many adults sit in the gap: they meet the licence but are not yet in an NHS priority group. That gap is why many choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. If you think you may be in a priority group, your GP is the right first conversation. The NHS keeps its own guidance on tirzepatide.5

What stays the same either way

Whichever route you use, the safeguards are identical in principle. A prescriber assesses suitability. The medicine is used alongside diet and activity changes. Genuine pens come through a regulated supply chain. The difference is who pays, how long you wait, and who qualifies first.

Choosing private treatment safely

If you go private, choose a pharmacy you can verify. Ours is GPhC-registered (9012878), supplies Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and stocks all six doses (2.5–15mg), which are in stock.

Nothing about private supply changes the clinical rules. If anything, a good private pharmacy applies them visibly, with a named prescriber, documented reviews and clear follow-up.

07 · Licensed GLP-1 medicines

Which GLP-1 medicines are licensed in the UK?

The licensed injectable options we cover are Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy (semaglutide) and daily liraglutide products. They differ in mechanism, dosing and schedule, and a prescriber chooses between them with you.

Is semaglutide a GLP-1 RA?

Yes. Semaglutide is a single-action GLP-1 medicine, sold as Wegovy and Ozempic. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine. Tirzepatide is different: it is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

How Ozempic works

As a single-action GLP-1 medicine, semaglutide works through the GLP-1 receptor alone, whereas tirzepatide acts on GIP and GLP-1 together.1 For weight management specifically, Wegovy is the semaglutide product with a weight-management licence; your prescriber will match the medicine to your situation.

Dosing at a glance

Mounjaro comes as a once-weekly pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Wegovy pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 Liraglutide (Saxenda, and products such as Erly) is supplied at 6mg per millilitre and is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Which GLP-1 medicine suits you?

No licensed medicine is best for everyone; the prescriber decides what suits you. Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.15 For tablets, see current Wegovy tablet prices on our site rather than relying on third-party figures. You can browse the Wegovy pen alongside Mounjaro.

Whichever you choose, all of these are prescription medicines with the same requirement: assessment first.

08 · Research peptides

Research peptides, retatrutide and compounded copies

Retatrutide has no UK licence, and Mounjaro must not be combined with unlicensed "research" peptides, other GLP-1 medicines, or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain.1 If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign.

Are peptides like GLP-1?

"Peptide" is a broad word, and sellers use it loosely. Calling a vial a "GLP-1 peptide" tells you nothing about whether it is licensed, tested, correctly made or safe to inject. What matters is regulatory status: a UK licence, a prescriber's review, and a registered pharmacy. Our page on the GLP-1 peptide explains the term, and GLP-1 peptide injections covers what injectables are actually licensed.

Where can I buy retatrutide peptides online?

You cannot obtain it through a regulated UK pathway, because it has no UK licence. Websites that sell it are operating outside the system, so there is no assessment of whether it suits you, no traceable pharmacy, and no assurance about what is in the vial. We do not supply it, and we would not recommend buying it.

What is the downside of taking peptides?

With unlicensed products, the downside is the absence of everything that makes a medicine safe to use: no UK licensing review, no regulated supply chain, no prescriber oversight and no safety data for combinations. With licensed medicines, the safeguards are in place, but you still need a prescriber to assess suitability and to support you if you have side effects.

What peptide gets rid of belly fat?

No peptide targets one body area. Be sceptical of dramatic weight-loss claims or spot-reduction promises. Licensed treatment supports a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity; it is not a spot treatment.

Spotting the red flags

  • No consultation or prescription required.
  • Labelled "for research only" yet sold with injection advice.
  • Dramatic weight-loss claims or promises of specific results.
  • No pharmacy on the GPhC register.
  • Pressure to combine products or "stack" them.

If you suspect a counterfeit or unsafe product, the MHRA runs counterfeit medicine alerts and the Yellow Card scheme.7 See also our overview of GLP-1 peptide therapy.

09 · Safety and suitability

Who should not take GLP-1 medicines, and how safety is managed

Whether a GLP-1 medicine is suitable for you is a prescriber's decision, based on your BMI, medical history and current medicines.1 Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Read the Mounjaro patient information leaflet before you start.13 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

Why a full medicines list matters

Tell the prescriber about everything you take, including over-the-counter products. Two interactions are worth knowing. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 And if you use insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk. These are not blanket bans; they are reasons to be assessed.

Never combine with other GLP-1 products

Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed research peptides or compounded copies.1 This includes taking a second product on top for "faster results". There is no safety data for it.

Leaving treatment

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 If you are worried about a symptom, speak to your prescriber rather than guessing.

Reporting side effects

Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which accepts reports from patients as well as professionals.19 Our prescribing team also provides side-effect support within the aftercare package, including ongoing monthly reviews.

Storage basics

Store unopened pens in the fridge until first use; they keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen.13 For other storage questions, follow the leaflet or ask the pharmacy.

10 · Cost over a year

What a regulated GLP-1 prescription costs over a year

Planning for a year is more useful than looking at one pen. A first year is 52 weeks, or 13 pens. At standard prices, a first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. These totals are before discounts: a new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

Phase by phase

PhaseLengthPensCost at standard prices
First year, 5mg after a 2.5mg starting pen52 weeks13£2,711.88
First year, stepping up through every dose to 15mg52 weeks13£3,599.88

For other maintenance doses, use the monthly price: £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg and £319.99 at 12.5mg per month (one 4-week pen), before discounts. The weekly equivalents are £42.50 at 2.5mg and £82.50 at 15mg.

How the discounts work

New customers save £40 on their first order at any dose with code FIRST40, including people switching from another provider at a higher dose. An automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).

Putting the market in context

Prices vary between providers. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month across all doses, and the gap between providers for the same dose runs from £27 to £41 (checked 10 October 2026). Boots' Mounjaro doses run from £179.00 to £339.00. Pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts.

Payment flexibility

You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, use Klarna or pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions. Since the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees and a free consultation, you can budget before you commit. You can compare the starting point at the Buy Mounjaro page.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

12 · How ordering works

How ordering a GLP-1 prescription works with us

Ordering takes three steps: a free online consultation, a prescriber review, then dispensing and free next-day delivery.

Step 1: free online consultation

You complete a short health questionnaire. It asks about your weight, height, medical history and current medicines, the same information the licence says a prescriber must consider.1 There is no charge and no obligation.

Step 2: prescriber review

Your answers are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. If the prescriber decides treatment is not suitable, your order is refunded automatically in full, with refunds taking 5–10 working days.

Step 3: dispensing and delivery

Approved orders are dispensed by our registered pharmacy. Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day. Delivery is free, next-day and tracked by DPD in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging; Saturday delivery is £14.99. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, and we supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply. When you receive your pen, follow its instructions for use and the patient information leaflet.13

After your first pen

Treatment continues with monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team. Repeat orders re-check suitability; there is no auto-shipping. You can also use GLPTrackr, our free companion app for iOS and Android, to track your journey.

Returns and support

Dispensed prescription medicines cannot be returned unless faulty, damaged or the wrong item; contact us within 3 days. Support runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, account portal chat, or phone on 0333 207 0413. More than 100,000 customers have been supported on their weight-loss journey, which describes the people we serve, not a treatment result.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Do you need a prescription for GLP-1 medicines in the UK?
Yes. Licensed GLP-1 weight-loss medicines such as Mounjaro are prescription-only. They are supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether treatment is suitable. Any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is outside the regulated system. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
Is semaglutide a GLP-1 RA?
Yes. Semaglutide, sold as Wegovy and Ozempic, is a single-action GLP-1 medicine. That distinguishes it from tirzepatide (Mounjaro), which activates two gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Both are prescription-only, and a prescriber decides which suits you. You can look at the Wegovy pen for current details.
What weight loss injections are available through the NHS?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP about your own eligibility.
How does Ozempic work?
Ozempic contains semaglutide, a single-action GLP-1 medicine, meaning it works through the GLP-1 receptor alone. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine. Mounjaro's tirzepatide differs because it activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which together help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people on tirzepatide feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. Your prescriber can explain which option fits your health and goals.
Are peptides like GLP-1?
"Peptide" is a broad label that sellers use loosely, so a product described as a GLP-1 peptide may or may not be a licensed medicine. What matters is regulatory status: whether it holds a UK licence, needs a prescriber's review and comes from a registered pharmacy. Retatrutide, for example, has no UK licence and no regulated supply chain. Read more in our guide to GLP-1 peptide therapy, and check any seller on the GPhC register.
Who should not take GLP-1 peptides?
Suitability is decided by a prescriber, who reviews your BMI, medical history and current medicines. Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed research peptides such as retatrutide, or compounded copies. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed: switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase. Insulin or sulfonylurea doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. If you are unsure, complete the free consultation and the prescriber will advise.
Which GLP-1 medicine is best?
No licensed medicine is best for everyone; the prescriber decides what suits you. Choice depends on your health profile, tolerance, schedule and prescriber advice. Avoid unlicensed products altogether.
What is the downside of taking peptides?
With unlicensed research peptides, the downside is that nothing protects you: no UK licence, no regulated supply chain, no prescriber oversight, and no safety data for combining them with licensed medicines. With licensed GLP-1 medicines the protections exist, but you still need an assessment, a supply from a registered pharmacy and follow-up. Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, and speak to your prescriber about new symptoms.
Where can I buy retatrutide peptides online?
You cannot buy it through a regulated UK route, because retatrutide has no UK licence. Sites that sell it are operating outside the prescription system, so there is no assessment of suitability, no traceable pharmacy and no assurance about what the vial contains. There is no safety data for combining it with licensed medicines. If you want regulated treatment, a licensed GLP-1 medicine through a GPhC-registered pharmacy is the safe route: see licensed injections.
Can I get a GLP-1 prescription with a BMI under 30?
Possibly. Mounjaro's weight-management licence covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Below 27 you fall outside the licensed criteria. A prescriber makes the final decision after reviewing your history and current medicines.
