A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Genuine GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only; anything sold as a 'non-prescription GLP-1' is a supplement, an unlicensed product or a potential counterfeit.
-
Supplements nicknamed 'nature's Ozempic' or the 'poor man's Ozempic' are not GLP-1 medicines and carry no comparable trial evidence.
-
A free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber is the regulated route; unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
-
Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 a month (checked 10 October 2026).
-
NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years, so many eligible adults choose regulated private treatment.

01
Can you buy GLP-1 medication without a prescription in the UK?
No: genuine GLP-1 medication is not available over the counter in the UK. Mounjaro, the medicine we supply, is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 The same principle applies to the other GLP-1 weight-loss pens and tablets: you need a prescriber to assess whether they are suitable. If you see a listing for a 'non-prescription GLP-1', it will be one of three things: a supplement that is not a GLP-1 medicine, an unlicensed product of unknown content, or a counterfeit.
The reason is practical rather than bureaucratic. Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber has to assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.111 That assessment is the safety step that no over-the-counter route can replicate.
You will find more on how this plays out for individual medicine types in our guides to non-prescription GLP-1 claims and GLP-1 agonists sold without a prescription.
02
Your real options compared
Supplements are available cheaply without assessment, and that low price is part of the safety problem, not a benefit.
| Route | Is it a GLP-1 medicine? | Prescription needed? | Clinical oversight |

The first four rows are the only ones that contain a licensed GLP-1 medicine, and every one of them runs through a prescriber. For a broader view of everything you can buy without a prescription, see non-prescription weight loss medications.

What the prescribed route costs
The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). New customers get £40 off their first order at any dose, so someone switching to us at 15mg sees a first order of £289.99. After that, every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25).
The standard monthly prices (one 4-week pen) are £169.99 at 2.5mg, £218.99 at 5mg, £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg, £319.99 at 12.5mg and £329.99 at 15mg. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year of 13 pens costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg, again before discounts. All six doses are in stock, and you can see the live figures on the Mounjaro pen page.

04 · Why it needs a prescription
Why GLP-1 medication needs a prescription
GLP-1 medication is prescription-only because it changes how your digestive and hormonal systems respond to food, and a clinician needs to check it is suitable for you first. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and it comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1
That action is exactly why oversight matters. Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose. You need to tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, or sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.113 The medicine can also reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1
Another reason is duration. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 A product you cannot trace back to a prescriber or a registered pharmacy is one you cannot easily stop, check or report on.
Eligibility is the third reason. The licence is for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with a weight-related condition, and a prescriber reviews your history before deciding.111 Some people who want a GLP-1 will not meet the criteria, and an honest assessment will say so. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. If you are weighing up the formal route, our page on the GLP-1 medication prescription process walks through it step by step.
05 · Supplements and 'natural Ozempic'
Supplements sold as 'natural Ozempic'
Berberine and similar products are not GLP-1 medicines, whatever the label says. Nicknames such as 'nature's Ozempic' and the 'poor man's Ozempic' are marketing shorthand: they borrow the name of a prescription medicine to sell a supplement. A supplement does not contain tirzepatide or semaglutide, does not activate the GIP and GLP-1 receptors in the way Mounjaro does,1 and has no comparable trial evidence.
They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, available cheaply without assessment, and their dosing is not standardised: what is in a capsule, and how much, differs from brand to brand. That is a safety point in itself. A medicine such as Mounjaro comes in defined strengths in a pen your prescriber has chosen, and your dose is stepped up under review. A supplement offers none of that structure.
Marketing for these products often makes dramatic weight-loss claims. Treat any promise of specific results with caution, because a genuine licensed medicine does not make them either. The honest trial figure for Mounjaro is an average, labelled with the trial name, with the note that individual results vary and that treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
There is also the question of interactions. Because even licensed medicines can change how others are absorbed, you should tell your prescriber or pharmacist about everything you take, including supplements.13 That includes anything you started because you read it would 'mimic' a GLP-1 drug. Without that conversation, nobody can tell you whether it matters in your case.
None of this means supplements are dangerous in every case or that you should never use one. It means you should not mistake one for a GLP-1 medicine, should not expect it to act like one, and should not use it as a reason to delay talking to a clinician if your BMI and health history suggest you might benefit from treatment. If a seller describes a supplement in the language of prescription medicines, such as 'GLP-1 activator' or 'Ozempic alternative', read that as a prompt to look harder at the claim rather than a reason to trust it.
06 · Mimicking GLP-1 naturally
Can you mimic GLP-1 naturally?
You cannot replicate a GLP-1 medicine with food or supplements, but you can support your weight with the same lifestyle changes the medicine is licensed alongside. GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone. Medicines like Mounjaro act on the receptors for that hormone and for GIP, helping regulate appetite, slow stomach emptying and improve the body's response to insulin.1 No dietary trick or capsule is shown to reproduce that effect to the same degree.
What the evidence does support is lifestyle change as the foundation. Mounjaro is licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1 In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people in the comparison group who made lifestyle changes alone lost on average 3.1% of their body weight over 72 weeks.2 That figure is a trial average, and individual results vary, but it shows two things: lifestyle changes matter, and for many people they are not enough on their own.
So what does a sensible non-medicine plan look like? Start with a reduced-calorie eating pattern you can keep up, add regular physical activity you will actually do, and ask your GP or practice team what weight-management support is available locally. A registered dietitian can personalise advice far better than a generic list.
If you have tried lifestyle changes sincerely and your BMI sits in the licensed range, a prescription medicine may be a reasonable next step to discuss. Our prescribers assess BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether treatment is suitable, and the medicine is used with, not instead of, diet and activity.1
Wanting a natural route is understandable, especially if injections worry you. If that is your concern, it is worth knowing that tablets exist in the prescription category too; our page on GLP-1 pills explains how they differ from over-the-counter products and why they still need a prescriber. The point stands whichever form you prefer: the convenient-sounding 'natural mimic' is a different thing from the medicine.
07 · Do non-prescription products work?
Do non-prescription GLP-1 products work?
Products sold as non-prescription GLP-1 options have no comparable evidence base to the licensed medicines, so you should not expect comparable results. People taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
These are trial averages, individual results vary, and the treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. To put the percentages in context with a worked example: for someone starting at 100 kg, 15% is about 15 kg, 19.5% is about 19.5 kg and 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is straight arithmetic from the trial averages, not a prediction for you.
The trial also reports how many people reached particular thresholds. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2 We quote these because they show the range, not to promise an outcome: trial averages do not predict your own result.
If a product's page promises dramatic weight-loss claims within weeks, treat that as a warning sign. Licensed treatment is a titrated, months-long process; the Mounjaro pen is stepped up through doses under prescriber review rather than started at a high strength. A practical test: does the seller ask about your medical history, your medicines, and your BMI? If not, the product is not being supplied as a medicine.
You can read more on how licensed GLP-1 agents are classed in our explainer on GLP-1 agonists, including why 'over the counter' and 'GLP-1 agonist' rarely belong in the same sentence.
08 · Counterfeit and scam risks
Counterfeits and sellers to avoid
The biggest risk with a non-prescription GLP-1 is buying a counterfeit or unregulated product. Counterfeit medicine alerts are published by the MHRA, which also runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting side effects and suspect products.719 Demand for weight-loss pens makes them an obvious target, and a fake pen can look convincing in a photograph.
- The seller offers to supply a pen without a consultation or prescription.
- The seller is not on the GPhC register. Any UK online pharmacy should be listed; you can check ours (registration 9012878) on the GPhC register.12
- Sales through social media accounts, messaging apps or beauty salons rather than a registered pharmacy.
- The listing is 'research use', 'peptide' or 'vial' language rather than a licensed UK product.
- The seller promises specific results or makes dramatic weight-loss claims.
- Delivery is not temperature-controlled and nobody can explain how the product was stored.
Compare that with what a regulated route gives you. We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens, with all six doses stocked from 2.5mg to 15mg. Orders go through a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. They are dispensed by our registered pharmacy and delivered free next-day, tracked, in discreet temperature-controlled packaging. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order.
If you have already bought something you are unsure about, do not use it. Speak to a pharmacist or your GP, keep the packaging, and consider reporting it. The Yellow Card scheme accepts reports of side effects and of suspected fake medicines.19 If you have had a reaction to anything you injected, get medical help straight away.
Read our hub on how to buy Mounjaro online safely if you are comparing providers.
09 · Cheaper alternatives to Ozempic
Is there a cheaper alternative to Ozempic?
The cheaper alternatives are other prescription GLP-1 medicines or a different pharmacy, not an over-the-counter product. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). Prices for Mounjaro vary between UK providers because of confidential discounts.
Across the UK pharmacies we track (checked 10 October 2026), Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 a month across all doses and providers. The cheapest and dearest 2.5mg starting pens run from £143.96 to £179.99. For the same dose, the gap between providers is anywhere from £27 to £41. Boots' Mounjaro dose prices run from £179.00 to £339.00.
Wegovy is the other prescription route people compare. Its pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, with titration stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 A first Wegovy pen costs £99.99 as a first-order price; see the Wegovy pen page for live pricing. Mounjaro and Wegovy work differently: Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while semaglutide is single-action.1
Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in products such as Erly, is supplied at 6mg per millilitre and is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. Your prescriber can advise on other details. GLP-1 tablets also exist in the prescription category; see current prices on the relevant product page.
Which is 'cheapest' depends on dose, provider and how long you need treatment, so compare like for like: the same medicine, the same dose, from a registered pharmacy, with the same level of review. We also offer Klarna and pay-monthly options with no subscription, which spreads cost without locking you in. Our overview of weight loss treatments lays out all the licensed options on one page.
10 · NHS versus private
NHS versus private access
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially people with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years.
That is why the phrase 'non-prescription' sometimes appears in the same breath as 'NHS': people hope to skip a queue. In reality, the NHS route also needs a prescription, from a clinician who has assessed you. What the NHS offers is cost: the prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item, though not everyone pays it and weight-management services may be commissioned differently. Ask your GP what applies to you, since local arrangements and eligibility depend on where you live and your health history.
The private route sits alongside, not against, the NHS. Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting for NHS access to reach them. The licensed criteria are wider than the NHS ones: a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with a weight-related condition.1 If you do not currently meet the NHS thresholds, private treatment may be the only prescription route open to you at present, and it still goes through a prescriber.
If you are in the NHS pathway and considering going private, or the reverse, tell both teams. Continuity matters: your prescriber needs to know what you are taking and when you last took it, and your GP benefits from knowing about your treatment. Our prescribing team's reviews are designed to support that kind of handover, and the NHS guide on tirzepatide explains more about its use.5
For Wegovy, NHS access runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
In short, the question 'can I get it without a prescription?' has a more useful companion: 'which prescription route suits me?' NHS and private are both legitimate answers, they are both clinician-led, and neither is a shortcut around assessment.
11 · How to get a prescription
How to get a prescription online
You can get a prescription for Mounjaro through a free online consultation, with a GPhC-registered prescriber deciding whether it is suitable. It works in four steps, and none of them is a shortcut around clinical judgement.
- Free online consultation: a short health questionnaire, with no charge and no obligation.
- Prescriber review: your answers are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- Dispensing and dispatch: dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
- Delivery: free next-day tracked delivery (DPD, temperature-controlled packaging, discreet). Saturday delivery is £14.99.
You can start your free consultation whenever you are ready. The prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable, in line with the licence.111 Be thorough in your answers, especially about medicines you take, as the prescriber relies on them.
What happens after the first order matters as much as the order. Aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing is shipped automatically. There are no subscriptions. If you need help, support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413.
If you experience side effects, tell your prescriber and read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pen. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 For anything urgent, such as severe, persistent stomach pain or swelling of the face or throat, get medical help straight away rather than waiting for a review.
Refund terms are straightforward: declined consultations are refunded automatically in full. Dispensed prescription medicines cannot be returned except where faulty, damaged or the wrong item (contact us within 3 days), and refunds take 5 to 10 working days. We also offer GLPTrackr, a free companion app for iOS and Android that helps you track your GLP-1 journey.
The Mounjaro non-prescription explainer covers what it means when a listing claims to need no prescription, and the Mounjaro ordering hub shows the full process. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
