GLP-1 Itching: What It Could Mean and What to Do (October 2026)

Itching is listed in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet: allergic reactions such as rash, itching or eczema are common (up to 1 in 10 people), and injection-site reactions are common too. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting itch, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme19. Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat or difficulty breathing, need medical help straight away.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching or eczema, and injection-site reactions, are listed as common side effects in the UK Mounjaro leaflet.
  • Tell your prescriber about any new or spreading itch, especially if it comes with feeling unwell.
  • Report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme, even if you are unsure of the cause.
  • Do not change or skip doses yourself because of an itch; ask your prescriber first.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can GLP-1 medicines cause itching?

Yes. For Mounjaro, the UK patient leaflet lists allergic reactions such as rash, itching or eczema as common (up to 1 in 10 people), and injection-site reactions as common too13.

If you take Mounjaro, we have a dedicated guide on whether Mounjaro can cause itching, and another on whether itching is a recognised side effect. Our shorter page on Mounjaro itching covers the practical steps.

02 · Your next step

What to do if you are itchy

Start by noting where the itch is, when it began and how it relates to your weekly injection. That timeline is the most useful thing you can give a prescriber.

PatternWhat to noteWhat to do
Itch only where you injectedWhich site, how soon after the dose, whether it settlesRotate sites as the instructions say and tell your prescriber
Itch on one area away from the injectionNew soaps, fabrics, other products or medicinesReview recent changes and mention it at your next review
Itch all over, or spreadingWhether you also feel unwell or have a rashTell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom
Itch with swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathingSpeed of onsetGet medical help straight away

If you are unsure, ask your prescriber; if you are already a customer, our aftercare team supports side-effect questions. You can read more about our weight loss clinic and prescriber reviews.

03 · Injection-site itching

Itching after a GLP-1 injection

Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week.

It goes under the skin once a week, in the stomach area at least 5cm from the belly button, the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives it. Rotate the site with each dose1. Mild redness, itching, a small bruise or a tender lump at the injection site is common and normally settles within a few days. Contact your clinical team if a reaction is spreading, hot, very painful, or lasts more than a week.

Do not stop or change the schedule on your own. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; if more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day.

04 · Itching elsewhere

Itching all over, or away from the injection

Widespread itching has a long list of possible causes, and most have nothing to do with a weekly injection. Dry skin, new skincare, changes in laundry products, other medicines and underlying health conditions can all play a part.

Itching that is new, persistent, spreading or accompanied by other symptoms deserves a proper conversation. Your prescriber can ask about your other medicines and health history and decide whether you need to be seen in person. If the itch comes with swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or a fast heartbeat, get medical help straight away.

05 · Reporting side effects

Reporting a suspected side effect

You can report any suspected side effect yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme19. You do not need to be certain the medicine caused it.

The patient information leaflet also tells you to talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse about any side effect, including ones not listed13.

06 · Storage and pen care

Pen care basics worth checking

Good pen handling removes some avoidable problems. Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can stay out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded1. Never use a pen that has been frozen.

If anything about a pen or its storage worries you, ask the pharmacy before injecting. We supply genuine KwikPens from official LillyDirect supply, with needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance included with every order. If you are comparing products, see the Mounjaro pen and Wegovy pen pages.

If you are curious about where other medicines fit, we explain whether pramlintide is a GLP-1 and whether Semglee is a GLP-1. For food ideas, see our page on GLP-1 smoothies.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can GLP-1 medicines cause itching?
Yes. The UK Mounjaro leaflet lists allergic reactions such as rash, itching or eczema as common (up to 1 in 10 people). Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting itch, and report it through the Yellow Card scheme. Itching has many causes unrelated to medicines, and a prescriber who knows your history is best placed to work out which applies.
Why am I itchy after a GLP-1 injection?
Injection-site reactions such as redness and itching are common and normally settle within a few days. Note the site, the timing after your dose and how long it lasts. Rotate injection sites as instructed, and describe the pattern to your prescriber. Do not skip or alter doses yourself; ask the prescriber how to proceed.
Can Ozempic cause itchy skin?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only, and its leaflet is the place to check its side effects. Tell your prescriber or pharmacist about any new itch, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What are the signs of a GLP-1 allergy?
Signs of a severe allergic reaction include swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, breathing problems or a fast heartbeat: get medical help straight away.
Why am I itchy after losing weight?
Itching has many possible causes, including everyday skin dryness and products you use. If it is persistent or spreading, tell your prescriber so the cause can be properly assessed rather than assumed.
Should I stop my injections if I am itching?
Speak to your prescriber before changing anything. They can review the timing, your other medicines and your history. Altering doses yourself carries unknown risks. If the itching comes with swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away.
How do I report an itch as a side effect?
Use the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, online or via its app. You do not need proof that the medicine caused it. You should also tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. If you are a customer, our support team can help with side-effect questions during opening hours.
