GLP-1 Booster Tablets: What Is Real and What Is Marketing (October 2026)

GLP-1 booster tablets are two very different things: licensed prescription tablets such as Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, or over-the-counter supplements sold as "boosters" that are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.2021 There is no tablet form of Mounjaro. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • "GLP-1 booster tablets" can mean licensed prescription pills or unregulated supplements. The two are not interchangeable.
  • Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are the licensed GLP-1 weight-loss tablets in the UK, and both need a prescription.
  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is injection-only in the UK; there is no Mounjaro tablet.
  • Supplements sold as boosters are not regulated for this use, and dosing is not standardised.
  • No trial compares Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so separate trial averages should not be set against each other.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Are GLP-1 booster tablets worth taking?

Only the licensed prescription tablets are worth considering as weight-loss treatment, and only if a prescriber confirms they suit you. Supplement "boosters" are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.2021

Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk), approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly), approved in August 2026.2021 Both are prescription-only, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results.

02 · Your next step

What should you do next?

If you meet the licensed criteria and want a regulated treatment, start with a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. They will advise which licensed option fits your health, other medicines and routine.11

For a weekly injection rather than a daily tablet, our Mounjaro pen starts at a standard price of £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starting dose, prices checked 10 October 2026. You can also see our wider weight loss clinic for all options.

03 · Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets: the oral semaglutide option

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day.20 They are licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.20

Treatment starts at 1.5mg once daily and steps up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose; the dose can stay at an earlier step if needed.20

The routine is the main practical hurdle. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.20 If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next tablet the following day.20

People on the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can move to the 25mg tablet, starting one week after their last injection.20 For current availability and pricing, see the Wegovy pill page.

04 · Foundayo

Foundayo (orforglipron): the Lilly tablet

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro.21 Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions; the tablet is swallowed whole.21

It is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.21

Treatment starts at 0.8mg once daily, then steps up to 2.5mg and 5.5mg, and then to 9mg, 14.5mg or 17.2mg depending on response and tolerability, with at least 30 days at each dose; 17.2mg once daily is the maximum.21 If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but never more than one tablet a day.21

Contraception matters here. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21 If you use Mounjaro instead, the oral contraceptive pill may be absorbed less well: switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. See the Foundayo product page for current details.

05 · Tablet trial results

How much weight can you lose on GLP-1 tablets?

Trial averages show meaningful weight loss on both tablets, but results vary between individuals and each tablet was tested in a different trial.

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 76.3% lost at least 5% of their body weight (vs 30.5% on placebo) and 59.8% lost at least 10% (vs 14.1%).22

In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23 The trial used capsules, and the UK 17.2mg tablet corresponds to the highest trial dose, so the tablet and capsule doses are not comparable milligram for milligram.23

These are two separate trials with different people, durations and doses, so they should not be read as a contest between the tablets. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

06 · Tablet side effects

Side effects of GLP-1 tablets

The most common side effects of both tablets are digestive. For Wegovy tablets, the most common side effects are digestive — nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain — along with headache and tiredness; gallstones and hair loss are listed as common.22

For Foundayo, the most common side effects are digestive — nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and stomach pain.23 In the trial, 10.3% of people on the highest dose stopped because of side effects, compared with 2.7% on placebo.23

If you notice a new or worrying symptom, tell your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

07 · Supplement boosters

What about supplement "boosters"?

Supplement boosters are not medicines. "Natural GLP-1" supplements (such as berberine) are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.20

That does not make them dangerous by default, but it does mean the claims on the label have not been tested the way a licensed medicine is. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, dosing is not standardised, and nobody reviews whether they suit you or interact with your other medicines.

Watch for marketing that promises dramatic weight-loss claims or compares a supplement to a prescription injection. A product that costs very little and is available without any assessment cannot be doing the same job as a licensed GLP-1 medicine. See also our guide on whether a GLP-1 booster works.

08 · Tablets vs Mounjaro

GLP-1 tablets vs Mounjaro injection

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection; Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily tablets.2021 No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so results from separate trials — with different people, durations and doses — should not be set against each other as if they were head to head (SURMOUNT-5 is the trial that compared tirzepatide directly with injected semaglutide).15

The practical differences matter as much as the averages: Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week. A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.

Mechanism is also different. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

For injectable context, in SURMOUNT-5 adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).15 Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.15

09 · Combining and switching

Can you combine a booster with Mounjaro?

Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides (such as retatrutide, which has no UK licence), or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain. If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign.

That includes taking a GLP-1 tablet alongside a GLP-1 injection. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together. For the supplement question specifically, see can you take a GLP-1 booster with Mounjaro.

There is also no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide. Switching is done under prescriber supervision: typically the previous medicine is stopped, a washout interval observed, and Mounjaro started at a dose your prescriber judges appropriate — often the 2.5mg starting dose, sometimes adjusted based on your history.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

11 · NHS access

NHS access and GLP-1 tablets in the UK

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

For private treatment, our service is a free online consultation, review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, dispensing by our registered pharmacy (GPhC 9012878) and free next-day tracked delivery. Ongoing monthly reviews are included for people who start treatment with us.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is there a pill form of GLP-1?
Yes. Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron). Both are prescription-only and taken daily. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, because tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK. A prescriber decides whether a tablet or an injection suits you.
Which GLP-1 pill should I choose for weight loss?
There is no proven winner, because no trial has compared the two tablets directly. Wegovy tablets were tested in OASIS 4 and Foundayo in ATTAIN-1, with different people, durations and doses. The practical difference is routine: Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine, while Foundayo has no food or water rules. A prescriber can advise.
Can a GLP-1 supplement replace a GLP-1 medicine?
No supplement is a substitute for a GLP-1 medicine. Supplements marketed as natural GLP-1 boosters are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. They are low-cost products with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. Licensed options need a prescription after a consultation.
Where can I buy semaglutide?
Semaglutide is prescription-only in the UK, so buy it only from a registered UK pharmacy after a consultation. Check the pharmacy on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878. Avoid any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. See our Wegovy pen page.
Is there a licensed semaglutide tablet for weight management?
For weight management, the licensed semaglutide tablet is Wegovy tablets, prescribed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition.
Who should not take GLP-1 pills?
Only a prescriber can judge this, based on your health history and other medicines. For Mounjaro, you should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. The licensed tablets are for adults meeting the BMI criteria, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective, so a non-oral or barrier method is needed. Mounjaro can also reduce absorption of the pill: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Pregnancy: Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy and should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together.
What can you not do while taking GLP-1?
Never combine GLP-1 medicines, and avoid unlicensed research peptides or compounded copies. With Wegovy tablets you must not eat, drink or take other tablets within at least 30 minutes of the dose. With Foundayo never take more than one tablet a day. These medicines work alongside diet and activity, not instead of them.
What are the long-term side effects of taking GLP-1?
Gallstones and hair loss are listed as common with Wegovy tablets. Discuss any new or lasting symptom with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme. Get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or swelling of the face or throat.
Can I lose a lot of weight on GLP-1 tablets?
Trial averages show meaningful loss, but individual results vary. In OASIS 4, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo. In ATTAIN-1, the highest orforglipron dose gave 12.4% over 72 weeks versus 0.9% on placebo. Trial averages do not predict your own result.
