GLP-1 and Propranolol: Taking Them Together (October 2026)

Many people are prescribed a GLP-1 medicine and propranolol at the same time, but whether the combination suits you is a prescriber decision, not a blanket yes or no. What matters is your full medicine list, your heart and blood pressure history, and whether you also use diabetes treatment. Tell your prescriber about propranolol before starting. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Tell the prescriber you take propranolol (or any beta blocker) before starting Mounjaro or any GLP-1 medicine; the consultation reviews your medicines.
  • There is no blanket yes or no on this combination, because it depends on your health history and why you take propranolol.
  • If you also use insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk.
  • Never stop propranolol yourself to start weight-loss treatment; changes to a prescribed medicine belong with the prescriber.
  • Report any new or worrying symptom to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take GLP-1 and propranolol together?

Possibly, but it is a decision for a prescriber who can see your whole medical picture. Propranolol is a prescription beta blocker used for a range of reasons, and the right answer differs between, say, someone taking it for heart rhythm, tremor or anxiety. A generic web answer cannot account for that.

Your propranolol is exactly the sort of detail the consultation is designed to capture.

02 · Your next step

What should you do if you take propranolol?

Declare it, in full, at the start. List the strength you take, how often, and what it was prescribed for. If you are unsure of the reason, check your repeat prescription or ask your GP surgery or community pharmacist.

Then let the prescriber decide. Because the answer depends on you, the useful question is not "is this combination allowed?" but "is this combination right for my health?". If your propranolol was started by a specialist, it is sensible to mention that too.

Our guide to taking Mounjaro with propranolol covers the same question from the tirzepatide side, and the page on Mounjaro and propranolol goes through what to raise at consultation. When you are ready, you can start a free consultation for the Mounjaro pen; the prescriber reviews your answers, including your medicines, before anything is dispensed.

03 · What we can and cannot say

Mounjaro and your other medicines

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

That is a useful starting point, because it shows why a medicines review matters. Tirzepatide is an active, systemically acting treatment, not a supplement. Any prescription medicine you take alongside it deserves a deliberate check, whether that is propranolol, a blood pressure tablet, or something unrelated.

The patient information leaflet that comes with the pen is also worth reading in full, including the section on other medicines. If anything in it seems to apply to you, raise it with the prescriber or your pharmacist rather than guessing.13

04 · What to tell your prescriber

What to tell your prescriber before you start

Give the prescriber a complete and accurate picture; it is the single most useful thing you can do. A short, organised list makes the review quicker and more reliable.

  • Propranolol details: the strength, how often you take it, how long you have been on it, and the reason it was prescribed.
  • Every other medicine: prescription, over-the-counter, herbal and supplement products, including anything for blood pressure, heart conditions, anxiety or diabetes.
  • Your conditions: heart, circulation, kidney, liver, thyroid or digestive problems, and any history of fainting or dizziness. Get medical help straight away if you faint.
  • Pregnancy plans: or breastfeeding, and what contraception you use. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.
  • Your goals and history: previous weight-loss attempts, and any other weight-loss treatment you currently use.

If you take propranolol for a condition that your specialist manages, say so. The prescriber may suggest you speak to that specialist first, which is a reasonable step rather than a refusal.

Be honest about things you might feel awkward mentioning, such as taking propranolol only occasionally or for performance anxiety. Occasional use still counts as a medicine you take. The prescriber is a regulated professional reviewing your answers confidentially, and an incomplete picture is the only thing that makes the review less safe.

Repeat orders re-check your suitability each time, with no auto-shipping, so if your propranolol changes later (a new strength, or stopping it), update us before your next order.

05 · Diabetes medicines and low blood sugar

If you also take insulin or sulfonylureas

If you use insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell the prescriber, because doses of those medicines may need adjusting when a GLP-1 or GIP medicine is added. The reason is the risk of low blood sugar. This does not mean the medicines must never be combined; it means the plan needs to be made deliberately and monitored.

This matters on a propranolol page because many people who take propranolol also have other long-term conditions, and diabetes is common among them. If that is you, the prescriber needs to know about every medicine involved, and your diabetes team should be kept in the loop. Do not change a diabetes medicine dose yourself.

Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes as well as for weight management, so this is a conversation clinicians are used to having. You do not need to feel your situation is unusual. You do need to share it, so the plan reflects it.

If you are unsure whether anything you take counts as a diabetes medicine, ask your pharmacist. The name on the box is usually enough for them to tell you.

06 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works, and why it matters for your other medicines

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

Because stomach emptying slows, the medicine can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 That is a good example of why every medicine you take is reviewed: the effect is not limited to weight, and the prescriber considers what else your body is handling.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. If you and your prescriber ever decide that the combination with propranolol is not right for you, bear that clearance period in mind.

The dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). If you are comparing options, our Wegovy pen page describes that alternative, and the same principle applies: declare propranolol and let the prescriber decide.1

07 · Propranolol and appetite

Does propranolol affect appetite or weight?

This is a separate question from combining the two. Some readers wonder whether propranolol could itself help or hinder weight loss, and whether that changes what they need from a weight-loss medicine.

Our dedicated pages tackle it directly: see whether propranolol suppresses appetite and whether it is an appetite suppressant. Keep in mind that Mounjaro is licensed for weight management, while propranolol is not a weight-loss treatment. Do not start, stop or adjust propranolol with weight in mind.

If you have noticed a change in your appetite or weight since starting propranolol, mention that at consultation. It is useful background for the prescriber, and it helps them understand what is driving your weight, not just how much of it there is.

08 · Expected results and honesty

What results can you realistically expect?

Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

For a worked example, someone starting at 100 kg who matched the 15mg average would lose about 21 kg. Treat that as arithmetic on an average, not a forecast.

09 · Reporting new symptoms

What to do if something feels wrong

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

If you notice a new or worrying symptom after starting Mounjaro, speak to your prescriber, and report it through the Yellow Card scheme. This applies whether or not you take propranolol, and whether or not the symptom seems related.19

Do not assume a symptom is caused by one medicine rather than another. When you take several medicines, it can be genuinely hard to tell, which is exactly why a clinician should look at it. Describe what you feel, when it started, and which medicines you take, with doses and timing.

If symptoms are severe or sudden, get medical help straight away rather than waiting for an email reply. Our support team can help with ordering and aftercare questions on Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, but they are not a replacement for emergency care.

Our ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team include side-effect support, so you have a route for these conversations after your pen arrives.

10 · How ordering works

How a consultation handles your propranolol

The consultation is a free online health questionnaire with no obligation, and it is where you declare propranolol. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it; this is a clinical review, not a scoring script.

Once approved, your pen is dispensed by our registered pharmacy (GPhC 9012878). Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day, with free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order.

Your Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. All six doses are in stock.

Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Store pens in the fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. You can read more about our weight loss clinic before you begin.

11 · NHS and temporary use

NHS access, and whether you can use a GLP-1 temporarily

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions). Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.46

If you take propranolol, your GP already knows your medicines, which can make an NHS conversation straightforward. Ask them about eligibility and the local pathway.

We cover that in our guide on whether you can take a GLP-1 temporarily.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can you take GLP-1 with beta blockers?
Many people do, but it is a prescriber decision rather than a general yes. Propranolol and other beta blockers are prescribed for different reasons, and your history matters. Tell the prescriber about every beta blocker you take before starting any GLP-1 medicine, and do not stop or change a prescribed beta blocker yourself.
Can I take Mounjaro if I'm on propranolol?
Possibly. We do not give a blanket answer, because it depends on why you take propranolol and your wider health. Declare it in the free consultation, where a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your medicines. If the combination does not suit you, they will tell you, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
Can you take semaglutide while on propranolol?
The same principle applies as for Mounjaro: it is for a prescriber to decide using your full medicine list. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic. Mention propranolol at consultation, give its strength and purpose, and follow the prescriber's advice rather than relying on online threads.
Do I need to tell the prescriber about propranolol if I only take it occasionally?
Yes. Occasional use is still a medicine you take, and the prescriber needs to know how often and why. Include over-the-counter and supplement products too. An incomplete medicines list is the main thing that makes a consultation less reliable, so over-declaring is always better than leaving something out.
What if I also use insulin or a sulfonylurea?
Tell the prescriber, because doses of insulin or sulfonylureas may need adjusting when a GLP-1 or GIP medicine is added, owing to the risk of low blood sugar. This does not mean they must never be combined. Do not change any diabetes dose yourself; agree the plan with your clinicians.
Can you stay on propranolol for life?
That depends on why it was prescribed and is a question for the clinician who prescribes it. Some people take a medicine for a short period and others long term. Do not stop propranolol suddenly or adjust it to suit weight-loss treatment; review it with your GP or specialist.
Should I stop propranolol before starting Mounjaro?
No, not on your own. Propranolol is a prescribed medicine, and changes should be made only by the clinician who prescribes it. Declare it at consultation, let the prescriber review it alongside Mounjaro, and follow their advice. If a change is advised, it will be coordinated with your usual prescriber.
Where do I report a side effect while taking both?
Speak to your prescriber and report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, whichever medicine you suspect. Describe the symptom, when it began, and every medicine you take, with doses. For severe or sudden symptoms, get medical help straight away rather than waiting for a reply to an email.
