In this guide
01 · The core answer
Can you take a GLP-1 medicine if you have MS?
You may be able to, but it needs an individual decision involving the clinicians who know your MS.
Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
For our overview of MS and GLP-1 medicines, and the wider question of weight loss drugs in MS, the same principle applies: personal medical history decides, not a general rule.
02 · Your decision
What should you do next?
Start with your MS team. Ask whether weight management is a sensible goal for you now, whether your current disease-modifying treatment or symptom medicines raise any concern, and whether they would like to be told if you start treatment.
If you are then considering private treatment, our weight loss clinic starts with a free online consultation. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Be completely open about your MS, your MS medicines and any symptoms.
If Mounjaro is the option you want to explore, the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose (standard price). Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. All six doses are in stock.

03 · What we cannot say
What is not known about GLP-1 and MS
You may see headlines about GLP-1 medicines and brain inflammation, nerve protection or neurological disease. Early or preliminary research is not the same as a licensed use. A medicine being studied for a neurological purpose does not make it a treatment for that condition, and none of the medicines discussed here are licensed in the UK as MS treatments.
If a page tells you with certainty that these injections are good or bad for MS, ask what source it is using. Our own guide to GLP-1 drugs and MS follows the same approach.
04 · How Mounjaro works
How Mounjaro works
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 If you and your neurologist decide to stop, that clearance period is worth knowing about.
05 · Your MS medicines
Interactions: your MS medicines and Mounjaro
The licensed information that applies to everyone, including people with MS, is that Mounjaro slows stomach emptying. This can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.11
Many people with MS take tablets or capsules, whether disease-modifying treatments or medicines for symptoms. So the safe course is simple: list everything you take, prescribed or bought over the counter, for your prescriber and your MS team.
The interaction guidance highlights warfarin and other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, and sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.11 Paracetamol is sometimes used for aches, so that last point may be useful.
Timing matters too. The effect on absorption is most relevant at the start of treatment and when the dose goes up, so those are the moments to be most alert and to ask your pharmacist or prescriber for advice. Because our prescribing team provides monthly reviews and dose-titration follow-up, you can raise anything you notice when each review comes round.
Contraception is a separate interaction. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1
06 · Questions for your neurologist
Questions to take to your neurologist or MS nurse
A short list helps you get a useful answer in a short appointment. These are conversation prompts rather than medical advice.
- Is weight loss a sensible goal for me given my current symptoms and mobility?
- Do any of my MS treatments or symptom medicines need to be taken in a particular way that a slower stomach might affect?
- How would we tell the difference between a medicine side effect and a possible MS change?
- Would you like to be informed if I start treatment, and who should I contact if something changes?
- If I stop, what should I watch for during the weeks the medicine clears?
Fatigue, balance, bladder and bowel symptoms and temperature sensitivity are familiar to many people with MS. Because they can overlap with changes you might notice after starting any new medicine, record what you notice and when. Dated notes help your clinicians far more than recollection does. Our free GLPTrackr companion app can help you log your injections and how you feel.
Do not stop or change MS treatment because of anything you read here. Weight management is an addition to your care, never a replacement for it. Our related guide on Mounjaro and MS goes through the same questions from the Mounjaro side.
07 · What weight-loss trials show
What the weight-loss evidence does and does not tell you
The main trial evidence for Mounjaro comes from people with obesity or overweight, not from people with MS. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
A worked example for context only: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Any benefit to mobility or comfort from lower body weight would be a matter for your clinicians to judge.
If you want to look at the evidence on the other leading option, our Wegovy pen page describes its dose ladder, and each medicine has its own trial data. Only a direct head-to-head trial supports a comparison between them, and none of this is MS-specific.
08 · NHS and private access
NHS and private access
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Ask your GP or MS team how the local pathway would apply to you.
For private treatment, EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration GPhC 9012878). Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Same-day dispatch applies when you order by 3pm. Prices were checked 10 October 2026.
New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). There are no subscriptions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than shipping automatically.
09 · Safety and reporting
Safety, new symptoms and reporting
If you notice a new or worsening symptom after starting a GLP-1 medicine, tell your prescriber and your MS team. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, whether the medicine is bought privately or on the NHS.19 Reports help regulators spot patterns that individual clinicians cannot see.
Counterfeit weight-loss pens are a real concern, and the MHRA publishes alerts about them.7 Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is not operating safely. For someone with a complex condition such as MS, a proper clinical review matters even more.
Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
