A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is a brand name for tirzepatide made by Eli Lilly; we do not supply any generic version of it.
  • Products sold as "generic Mounjaro" or cheap tirzepatide online may be unlicensed or counterfeit, so check the seller on the GPhC register.
  • Liraglutide products are a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.
  • "Poor man's Ozempic" supplements have no clinical oversight and are not equivalent to licensed medicines.
  • Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40; every later order is £25 off the standard price.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is there a generic weight loss drug you can buy safely?

For tirzepatide, the answer is no: we are not aware of any licensed generic tirzepatide pen, and we do not supply one. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.1

Other weight-loss medicines exist, and some, such as liraglutide products, are sold under different names from the original brand. Whether a given product is licensed, and for whom, is a decision for a prescriber. You can read more in our guide to generic Mounjaro and on whether you can get generic tirzepatide.

02 · At a glance

Branded, generic-labelled and supplement options compared

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)Licensed brand, made by Eli LillyOnce weekly penPrescriber review and monthly follow-up
Wegovy (semaglutide)Licensed brand, different single-action mechanismOnce weekly penPrescriber review required
Liraglutide products (Saxenda, Erly)Licensed daily injection at 6mg/mlDaily injectionPrescriber review required
"Generic Mounjaro" from unknown sellersUnverified origin, not the licensed medicineUnknownOften none
"Poor man's Ozempic" supplementsLow-cost supplement, no licence for weight lossDosing is not standardisedNone

The pattern is simple: the further a product sits from a prescriber and a GPhC-registered pharmacy, the less you can rely on what is in it.

03 · Next step

What should you do next?

If cost is what draws you to generics, compare real prices first. Across the UK pharmacies we track, a Mounjaro pen ranges from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 10 October 2026). Our Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 standard price. If you are ready to look at treatment properly, our weight loss clinic explains the options and the free consultation.

04 · What generic means

What "generic" means for weight loss drugs

A generic medicine contains the same active ingredient as a branded one and is approved by the regulator as an equivalent. It only becomes available when the original maker's protection ends. It is not simply any product that mentions the same ingredient.

For weight loss, the key point is that the active ingredient and the brand are different things. Tirzepatide is the ingredient; Mounjaro is the brand. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.

When a seller advertises "tirzepatide weight loss generic" or "generic Mounjaro for weight loss", ask what regulator approved it, who manufactured it and which pharmacy dispensed it. If those answers are vague, walk away. Our guide to GLP-1 generic drugs goes into this in more depth.

05 · Liraglutide and others

Liraglutide, Wegovy and other prescription options

Several licensed weight-loss medicines exist besides Mounjaro, and they differ in how they are taken. Liraglutide (Saxenda, and products such as Erly) is supplied at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre. It is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Wegovy (semaglutide) pens come in 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg strengths, taken once weekly. Titration steps up after at least four weeks, reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17, and 2.4mg is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1 A prescriber weighs your health history, other medicines and goals.

For other medicines that people ask about, such as stimulant-type drugs, see our explainer on amphetamine drugs for weight loss.

06 · Evidence for licensed drugs

What the evidence shows for the licensed medicine

Only licensed, trialled products come with published evidence you can check. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

That evidence belongs to the genuine Mounjaro product used as the trial studied it. A pen of unknown origin, or a compounded or relabelled vial, cannot borrow those results. Nobody can tell you what a mystery product contains, so those trial results cannot be relied on for it.

Tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after a final dose, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 With an unverified product you would not even know what to expect.

07 · Unsafe copies

How to spot unsafe "generic" weight loss products

Treat any weight-loss injection offered without a consultation or prescription as a warning sign. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7 Use these checks before buying anything:

  • Look the pharmacy up on the GPhC register. Ours is GPhC 9012878.
  • Be wary of sellers who promise specific results or dramatic weight-loss claims.
  • Avoid anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
  • Be suspicious of prices far below those shown by regulated pharmacies.
  • Check that the pen is a genuine KwikPen with a printed expiry date and a patient leaflet.

If you have already used a product and feel unwell, speak to a clinician and report the problem through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Our own supply comes through official LillyDirect: Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, genuine KwikPens, with all six doses in stock.

08 · Poor man's Ozempic

"Poor man's Ozempic" and supplement alternatives

The phrase "poor man's Ozempic" is a marketing nickname, usually attached to berberine and similar supplements. These are low-cost supplements sold with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. They are not licensed medicines for weight loss and do not work the way tirzepatide or semaglutide do.

Dramatic weight-loss claims attached to a supplement should make you more cautious, not less. If a supplement is a reasonable fit for you, a pharmacist or GP can say so, particularly if you take other medicines.

09 · NHS and private routes

NHS access versus private treatment

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Choosing private does not mean choosing generic. It means a regulated pharmacy supplying the same licensed product. NHS prescriptions in England carry a standard charge of £9.90 per item for those who pay, though weight-management supply routes differ, so ask your GP what applies to you.

10 · Costs and ordering

What treatment costs and how ordering works

The genuine Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 at the starting dose, £218.99 at 5mg and £279.99 at 7.5mg as standard prices for a four-week pen. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, at standard prices. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).

Ordering works in simple steps:

  • Complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no obligation.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • We dispense and dispatch, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

You can also see where to buy weight loss medications safely, and read about generic weight loss injections in more detail. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and there are no subscriptions.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the best generic weight-loss drug?
No licensed medicine is best for everyone: the right medicine depends on your health, other medicines and goals, and a prescriber decides what suits you. A prescriber can compare licensed options such as Mounjaro, Wegovy and liraglutide products with you. Be cautious of any seller who ranks products without assessing you first.
Is there a generic version of Mounjaro?
We do not supply, and are not aware of, a licensed generic version of Mounjaro. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly. Products advertised online as generic Mounjaro or cheap tirzepatide may be unlicensed or counterfeit. Check any seller on the GPhC register and avoid anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
What is a cheaper alternative to Ozempic for weight loss?
Cost is best compared between licensed options rather than by switching to an unregulated product. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and the licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). Mounjaro pens cost £143.96 to £339.00 per month across the UK pharmacies we track (checked 10 October 2026), depending on dose and provider.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The nickname is usually applied to berberine and similar low-cost supplements. They are sold with no clinical oversight, their dosing is not standardised, and they are not licensed medicines for weight loss. They do not act like tirzepatide or semaglutide, so they should not be treated as an equivalent substitute.
Why are people stopping Wegovy?
In the STEP 1 trial, 7.0% of people on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) stopped treatment because of side effects, compared with 3.1% on placebo; if you are thinking about stopping Wegovy, speak to your prescriber first. Report any suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
Are liraglutide products a generic weight loss injection?
Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in products such as Erly, is a separate medicine from tirzepatide and semaglutide. It is supplied at 6mg per millilitre and is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. Whether it suits you is a decision for a prescriber after reviewing your health history.
Can I use tirzepatide from an unknown seller to save money?
We advise against it. A product of unknown origin cannot share the published trial evidence for genuine Mounjaro, and you cannot verify its contents or storage. The MHRA publishes counterfeit alerts. A regulated pharmacy with a prescriber review is the safer route, and a new customer's first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS instead?
Yes, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Full rollout is expected to take years, so many eligible people choose regulated private treatment.
