Foods to Eat When Taking Mounjaro (October 2026)

Good foods to eat when taking Mounjaro are protein at every meal, vegetables, fibre-rich carbohydrates and plenty of fluids, in smaller, slower portions. No food is banned on Mounjaro, but very fatty, fried or very sugary food often feels worse because the stomach empties more slowly.1 The aim is a sustainable calorie deficit, not a perfect food list. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, but protein, vegetables, fibre and fluids make treatment easier.
  • Smaller, slower meals suit a stomach that empties more slowly; very fatty, fried or very sugary food is where many people feel worse.
  • Include a protein source at every meal and do resistance exercise to protect muscle as appetite falls.
  • Keep water within reach, and if you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.
  • Mounjaro is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so food choices matter, but you do not need a rigid plan.
In this guide

01 · The short version

What foods should you eat when taking Mounjaro?

Build meals around protein, vegetables and fibre, eat smaller portions more slowly, and drink regularly. Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1

Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It supports your eating; it does not replace it. If you want the same advice written for GLP-1 medicines in general, see our guide on what to eat on GLP-1 treatment.

02 · Practical plate

A simple plate for Mounjaro

You do not need to count everything. Use this table as a template, then adjust to your appetite and any side effects.

Part of the mealGood choicesWhy it helps
Protein (every meal)Eggs, chicken, turkey, white fish, salmon, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu, beans, lentilsHelps protect muscle and keeps you full when appetite is low
VegetablesLeafy greens, broccoli, peppers, courgette, tomatoes, carrotsAdds fibre and volume for few calories
Fibre-rich carbohydratesOats, wholegrain bread, brown rice, potatoes with skin, wholewheat pasta, pulsesSteady energy and fibre for digestion
Fats (small amounts)Olive oil, avocado, nuts, seedsSatisfying, but rich food sits heavily, so keep portions modest
FluidsWater, herbal tea, diluted squash, clear brothsReduced appetite means less fluid from food

Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.1 For a longer shopping-list view, our best foods while on Mounjaro page goes further.

If you are still deciding, the Mounjaro pen starts at a standard price of £169.99 for the 2.5mg starting pen, and a free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Our weight loss clinic page explains the wider service.

03 · Protein and muscle

Protein and muscle preservation

Protein matters more on Mounjaro than most people expect, because some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue. Protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.

There are two levers. The first is adequate protein: include a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low. The second is resistance exercise two or more times a week. This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.

In practice, eat the protein on your plate first. If you can only manage a few mouthfuls, those mouthfuls should be the egg, chicken, fish, yoghurt or beans rather than the bread or rice. Small, protein-led snacks between meals also help when a full plate feels like too much.

Good everyday options include:

  • Eggs, boiled, scrambled or in an omelette with vegetables
  • Plain Greek yoghurt with berries
  • Chicken, turkey or white fish with vegetables
  • Lentil or bean soups and stews
  • Tofu or tempeh stir-fries
  • Cottage cheese on wholegrain toast

Exercise is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Regular moderate activity such as brisk walking, plus resistance work, is the evidence-backed pattern, and on injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts.

04 · Settling your stomach

What can I eat to settle my stomach on Mounjaro?

When your stomach feels unsettled, keep meals small, slow and plain. The reason is simple: the stomach empties more slowly on treatment, so large portions sit heavily, and many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food.1 Smaller, slower meals work better.

There is no list of medically proven stomach-settling foods, so treat the following as everyday common sense rather than treatment. Many people reach for bland, low-fat foods on difficult days:

  • Plain toast or crackers with a little protein, such as egg
  • Scrambled or boiled eggs without heavy butter or cream
  • Plain Greek yoghurt, if dairy sits well with you
  • Simple soups and broths
  • Plain rice, potato or porridge made with water or a modest amount of milk
  • Baked or steamed white fish or chicken

Toast, eggs and yoghurt are not special remedies; they are simply gentle, low-fat and easy to portion. Bananas are fine too, since no food is banned on Mounjaro. If a food makes you feel worse, leave it for a while and try again later.

Eat slowly and stop when you feel comfortably full rather than pushing on. Sitting upright after eating can help if you notice reflux. Strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people.1

Side effects are usually most noticeable when you start or step up a dose. If symptoms are severe, persistent or new, speak to your prescriber or pharmacist, and you can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

05 · Meal ideas

Breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas

A good Mounjaro breakfast is protein-led and gentle on the stomach. Many people have a smaller appetite in the morning, so keep it simple and do not skip protein entirely.

Breakfast ideas:

  • Plain Greek yoghurt with berries and a sprinkle of oats
  • Scrambled eggs on wholegrain toast
  • Porridge with a spoonful of nut butter and fruit
  • An omelette with spinach and tomatoes
  • Cottage cheese with sliced fruit

Lunch ideas:

  • Chicken and salad wrap in a wholegrain tortilla
  • Lentil soup with a slice of wholegrain bread
  • Tuna or salmon salad with beans
  • Leftover roast vegetables with feta and chickpeas

Dinner ideas:

  • Baked salmon with new potatoes and green vegetables
  • Turkey chilli with beans and a small portion of rice
  • Tofu and vegetable stir-fry
  • Grilled chicken with roasted vegetables and quinoa

None of these is a prescribed plan. They simply fit the pattern of protein, vegetables and fibre in modest portions.

Snacks are worth planning if your appetite is low and you struggle to reach your protein at meals. Yoghurt, boiled eggs, a small handful of nuts, hummus with vegetable sticks and fruit with cottage cheese are all easy to portion.

06 · Drinks and hydration

Drinks, hydration and coffee

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.1

Keep water within reach through the day. Sipping steadily is easier than drinking large amounts at once, particularly when you feel full. Herbal tea, diluted squash and clear broths all count. If you cannot keep fluids down, treat it as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through.

Coffee and tea. There is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine. Two practical notes apply: strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. The "coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.

Alcohol. There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule, and many people find their desire for alcohol drops on treatment.

07 · What to ease off

What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?

You do not have to avoid anything entirely, but it helps to ease off very fatty, fried and very sugary food. Many people feel worse after these, and because the stomach empties more slowly, large portions sit heavily.1

In practice, the foods people most often find difficult are:

  • Deep-fried food and fast-food meals
  • Creamy, buttery or very oily dishes
  • Sugary drinks, sweets and large desserts
  • Very large portions eaten quickly
  • Strong coffee on an empty stomach
  • Alcohol, especially on an empty stomach

Think of this as a list of things to try less of, not rules. Because treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, the aim is a sustainable deficit rather than a perfect food list.1 If one bad meal makes you feel unwell, treat it as information and adjust next time. Our dedicated page on foods to limit on Mounjaro covers this in more detail.

Avoid chasing extreme restriction too. Eating far too little makes it harder to get enough protein, and can leave nutritional gaps.

08 · Vitamins and supplements

Vitamins and supplements on Mounjaro

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps. A standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight, and you should discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.1

Be wary of products sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters". They are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.

If you are on other medicines, ask your pharmacist before adding anything new. A supplement is a backup to food, not a replacement for a varied diet.

09 · As your dose rises

How eating changes as the dose rises

Appetite usually falls further as the dose increases, so your food choices become more important, not less. With less room on the plate, protein and fibre need to take priority over low-value extras.1

Expect to adjust. A portion that felt normal at the starting strength may feel too large later. Smaller plates, slower eating and protein-first habits help. Your prescriber reviews your progress, side effects and dose as part of monthly follow-up.

For context on results, in the SURMOUNT-1 trial people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

That is why food and movement are worth the effort. You can also compare approaches in our guide to eating on weight loss injections, or see how a different weight loss medication approaches diet.

10 · Beyond food

Getting the most from treatment

To make the most of Mounjaro, combine sensible food choices with regular movement and enough fluids. There is no secret trick; consistency does the work.

A few habits help most people:

  • Plan protein before you plan anything else
  • Eat slowly and stop when comfortably full
  • Keep water nearby throughout the day
  • Walk regularly and add resistance work for muscle
  • Notice which foods make you feel unwell and ease off them
  • Keep up with your prescriber's reviews

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice. NHS access is being phased in over several years, with NICE recommending it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the best diet while taking Mounjaro?
There is no single required diet. The most sensible approach is protein at every meal, plenty of vegetables and fibre, regular fluids, and smaller, slower portions. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable calorie deficit rather than a perfect food list. Very fatty, fried or very sugary food is where many people feel worse.
How can I maximise weight loss on Mounjaro?
Use it as licensed: alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Include protein at every meal, do resistance exercise two or more times a week to protect muscle, walk regularly and stay hydrated. Trial results are averages, so individual results vary, and attending your prescriber's reviews helps keep your dose and side effects on track.
What is a good breakfast for Mounjaro?
A protein-led breakfast that is gentle on the stomach works well, such as plain Greek yoghurt with berries, scrambled eggs on wholegrain toast, porridge with fruit, or an omelette with vegetables. Appetite is often lower in the morning, so keep portions modest, eat slowly and try not to skip protein altogether.
What can I eat to settle my stomach on Mounjaro?
Keep meals small, slow and plain. Many people choose low-fat foods such as toast, eggs, plain yoghurt, simple soups or plain rice on difficult days, and avoid very fatty, fried or very sugary food. These are everyday choices, not medical treatments. If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
No food is banned, but it helps to ease off very fatty, fried and very sugary food, very large portions and alcohol, particularly on an empty stomach. Strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people. Treat these as things to try less of, not strict rules.
Is toast or Greek yoghurt good for an upset stomach on Mounjaro?
Both are gentle, low-fat and easy to portion, so many people tolerate them on difficult days. They are not proven remedies, and no food is banned on Mounjaro. Add a little protein where you can, eat slowly, and if symptoms are severe or persistent speak to your prescriber or pharmacist.
Are bananas, coffee and tea allowed on Mounjaro?
Yes. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, and there is no interaction with caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine. Strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks can undermine your calorie deficit. Social media coffee rules have no clinical basis.
Do I need vitamins while taking Mounjaro?
No supplement is required, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Products sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
