A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro has strong trial evidence: average losses over 72 weeks were far greater than with lifestyle changes alone.
-
Progress is gradual. Expect modest change on 2.5mg and think in months, not days.
-
Trial figures are averages. Some people lose more, some less, and your prescriber reviews your response.
-
It works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, not instead of them.
-
Be wary of look-alike 'natural Mounjaro' products and fake pens: only the licensed medicine has this evidence.

01 · The verdict
Does Mounjaro really work? The short answer
Yes, Mounjaro works for most people who take it as prescribed. The headline trial is SURMOUNT-1, and the figures are averages across many people. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.2 Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Mounjaro makes a reduced-calorie diet easier to follow; it does not do the work for you.
If you want the wider picture across the medicine class, our guide on whether weight loss injections work compares what the evidence says for the group as a whole.
02 · Realistic expectations
What 'working' looks like at each stage
Mounjaro works gradually, and the stage you are at changes what a good result looks like.
| Stage | What is realistic | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| Early weeks on 2.5mg | Adjustment phase. Some notice appetite change straight away, others very little. Early loss includes water weight. | Settling into routine, eating enough protein, reporting side effects |
| Stepping up through the doses | Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. | Judging the trend over weeks, not single weigh-ins |
| Higher or maintenance dose | Trial averages were measured at 72 weeks, so the biggest changes take many months. | Review with your prescriber, honest food tracking, activity |
| A plateau | Normal and expected for a few weeks as the body adapts. | Review intake, sleep and alcohol; ask whether a dose step-up is appropriate |
The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.1
03 · Your decision
Is Mounjaro worth it for you?
Mounjaro is worth considering if you are an adult in the licensed group, you are ready to change how you eat and move, and you accept a gradual, medically supervised process. It is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is not suitable for everyone, which is why the consultation exists. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. It should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive; if you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
If you would like to see where you stand, you can start a free consultation for the Mounjaro pen. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99 per month), and all six doses are in stock. For broader support around diet, activity and follow-up, our weight loss clinic explains how the whole programme fits together.

04 · How it works
How Mounjaro works on appetite and blood sugar
Mounjaro works by acting on two gut-hormone systems at once, which helps regulate appetite. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1
The practical point is simple. The medicine changes hunger and fullness signals. You still decide what goes on the plate, but the decisions become less of a daily fight. That is the honest meaning of 'it works': it lowers the effort needed to eat less, rather than burning fat on its own.
05 · Trial evidence
What the main trial actually found
The main evidence for Mounjaro in weight management is the SURMOUNT-1 trial, published in a leading medical journal. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
There are some honest caveats worth stating plainly. First, these are averages, so some people lost far more and some far less. Trial averages do not predict your own result. Higher doses produced larger average losses, but most people do not start at a high dose; you move up in steps.
For a worked example of what a percentage means in practice: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is the straight arithmetic of the trial average, not a forecast for any individual and not a timeline.
It also helps to be clear about what the trial does not say. It does not say everyone reaches the top dose, and it does not say weight loss is smooth. If you see a page claiming a specific loss in a specific number of weeks, treat it with suspicion, because the evidence supports averages measured over many months.
06 · How quickly it works
How quickly does Mounjaro start working?
Many people notice appetite change within the first weeks, but measurable weight loss builds slowly, and both patterns are normal. The 2.5mg starting weeks are about adjustment, and experiences differ widely: some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose — both are normal.1
Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. That is why we suggest weighing at a consistent time, looking at the direction over several weeks and ignoring the daily noise.
What about the three-month mark, which many people ask about? Three months in, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, so trial-average losses at this stage are modest compared with the headline figures: in SURMOUNT-1, average weight loss built month by month, with the full 15–21% averages measured at 72 weeks, not 12.2 A sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation.2
Slower early progress does not predict failure: the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you. Titration is deliberately gradual. Starting low and staying at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond, lets the body adjust and keeps side effects manageable.
Treatment response is formally reviewed. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1
07 · Fast loss and belly fat
Fast weight loss and belly fat: what is realistic
Very fast loss in the first month is possible for some people but is not the expected pattern, and it is not the goal. When people describe losing weight 'so fast' on Mounjaro, the early scale drop often includes water weight, and some people respond more strongly than the average. The medicine is designed to be gradual, and trying to speed it up by skipping meals or changing the dose yourself is not safe. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.1
What about belly fat? In trials, weight loss on tirzepatide came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures, and most participants with prediabetes returned to normal blood-sugar levels.2 So a smaller waist is a documented average outcome. These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises.
That is why prescribers talk about weight management as health management rather than appearance. Changes in blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar can matter as much to long-term health as the number on the scales.
08 · Why results stall
Why some people stop losing weight
Stalling is common, usually temporary, and often fixable within the licence. Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear: plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight.1
If you are asking how to speed up weight loss on Mounjaro, these are the sensible, licensed responses:
- Review food intake honestly, because portions drift back up over time.
- Protect protein and keep up your activity.
- Check the basics, including sleep and alcohol.
- Discuss with your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum.
A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.1 Taking extra medicine does not make it work faster and can make you unwell.
Some people also find it works less well than they hoped because of expectations set by social media. Dramatic before-and-after stories show the top end of the range, not the typical experience.
If you have been on your highest tolerated dose for a sustained period and progress has genuinely stopped, talk to your prescriber. That conversation is part of our ongoing monthly reviews, and it is the right route, rather than changing anything yourself.
09 · Cons and side effects
The downsides: cons of taking Mounjaro
Mounjaro has real drawbacks, and an honest answer to 'does it work' includes them. The commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and they usually settle.1
Beyond side effects, the main cons are practical:
- It is a weekly injection, which not everyone likes.
- Results depend on changing how you eat and move; it is not a substitute.
- Progress is gradual, which can feel frustrating.
- It is a private cost for many people, because NHS access is phased.
- Stopping treatment means the medicine clears over four to five weeks, and its effect on appetite fades with it.
Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. If you notice a new symptom, tell your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Foods to avoid are a common question. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas. What most people find in practice is that very rich or very large meals feel uncomfortable when stomach emptying slows, so smaller, protein-led meals tend to be better tolerated. Ask your prescriber about anything specific to you, including alcohol.
10 · Lookalikes and fakes
'Natural Mounjaro', supplements and fake pens
The trial evidence applies only to genuine Mounjaro, not to anything marketed as 'natural Mounjaro'. These products are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight. Their dosing is not standardised, and dramatic weight-loss claims attached to them should be treated with caution. For a calm look at what is sold over the counter, see our guide to over-the-counter appetite suppressants.
The same caution applies to newer formats. Tablets and liquids are different products with their own evidence; see our pages on weight-loss tablets and oral liquid products, and do not assume the injectable results carry over.
Counterfeits are a genuine safety risk. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations — some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.7 Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.12 Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.
A genuine UK Mounjaro pen comes from a registered pharmacy with a batch number and expiry date, arrives cold-chain packaged, and the solution inside is clear and colourless.13 Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, is past its expiry, has been above 30°C, or has been out of the fridge for more than 30 days in use. An unopened pen is stored at 2–8°C until first use.
Our Mounjaro is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens, and every pen carries a batch number and expiry date that can be checked.
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
12 · NHS or private
Getting it on the NHS or privately
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
If you go privately, the process is straightforward. You complete a free online consultation, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, and if approved your order is dispensed by our registered pharmacy. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Delivery is free, next-day, tracked and temperature-controlled, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order.
Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support are part of the service, and repeat orders re-check suitability with no auto-shipping. Whatever route you choose, a medicine only works when it is used under proper supervision, so make sure that supervision is in place.
