Do you have to take GLP-1 every day?

No, not with the injections most people in the UK use for weight management. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, supplied in a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen.¹ Wegovy injections are also weekly. The tablets are the daily option.

02 · Timing

Which day is best to take a GLP-1 shot?

Choose the day you will remember and can keep every week. No day is clinically better than another, so choose around your routine: a day when you are usually at home, not travelling and not about to have a big social meal.

Many people pick a quiet evening or a weekend morning. If you often travel for work, a day you are normally home helps you keep the pen cold and take the injection calmly. Your prescriber and the patient leaflet set the rules for moving your day, so check with them rather than improvising.¹³

03 · Weekly injections explained

Why Mounjaro and Wegovy are weekly

Weekly dosing works because of how long the medicine stays active. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it keeps working between doses rather than wearing off overnight.¹ That is why a single weekly injection can be enough.

Mounjaro activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.¹ In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

The pen is a multi-dose KwikPen that comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Unopened pens stay in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use and keep until the printed expiry date.¹³

Your prescriber decides when to move to the next strength, based on how you are tolerating it and how you are responding, which is why monthly reviews matter. Any figures for results come from trials: in SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

04 · Daily GLP-1 tablets

GLP-1 tablets: how many a day?

Both licensed GLP-1 tablets are taken as one tablet a day. They are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only.

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day.²⁰ The routine is strict. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.²⁰ If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next tablet the following day.²⁰ Treatment starts at 1.5mg once daily and steps up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose.

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly. Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions; the tablet is swallowed whole.²¹ If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but never more than one tablet a day.²¹ Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.²² In the separate ATTAIN-1 trial, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo.²³ No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so these figures should not be set against each other as if they were head to head.²⁰

05 · Drops, ampoules and supplements

Do you take GLP-1 drops every day?

GLP-1 "drops" are not one of the licensed UK treatments, so there is no approved daily number of drops. Products sold as drops, ampoules or "natural GLP-1" are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. Their dosing is not standardised, so any instruction on the label is the seller's own.

Be especially wary of anyone offering to supply GLP-1 products without a consultation or prescription, or promising dramatic weight-loss claims. Licensed treatments are prescription-only and supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign.

06 · Every other day or stretched

Can you take GLP-1 every other day?

No. A weekly GLP-1 is not designed to be taken every other day, and doing so would not be a licensed schedule. Mounjaro is a once-weekly medicine.¹

The same is true in the other direction. If you feel your dose is too strong, too weak or wearing off before your next injection, tell your prescriber.

Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides, or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain.

07 · How long you stay on it

Can you take GLP-1 temporarily or stop?

You can stop a GLP-1 at any time, but you should talk to your prescriber first, because the plan for stopping is part of safe treatment.

When you stop, the medicine does not vanish at once. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.¹

In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.¹⁴ The right plan depends on your health, your goals and how you responded. There is no licensed once-a-month maintenance schedule for Mounjaro.

08 · Switching and expectations

Switching, results and not losing weight

If you are moving from another GLP-1, do it only under prescriber supervision. There is no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide. Typically the previous medicine is stopped, a washout interval is observed, and Mounjaro is started at a dose your prescriber judges appropriate, often the 2.5mg starting dose. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together. People on the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can move to the 25mg tablet, starting one week after their last injection.

In the first large head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5), adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).¹⁵ Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone. Wegovy's own trial, STEP 1, showed an average loss of 14.9% over 68 weeks compared with 2.4% on placebo.⁹

If you are not losing weight as expected, do not change the schedule yourself. Trial averages do not predict your own result. Review your diet, activity, sleep and other medicines with your prescriber, who can decide whether a dose change is appropriate. Taking the injection earlier, or more often, is not the answer.
