Do You Get Hunger Pains on Mounjaro? (October 2026)

Yes, some people still feel hunger or stomach pangs on Mounjaro, because the medicine makes most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals rather than switching hunger off completely.1 Your response can change with dose, meal size and timing. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro helps most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, but it does not remove hunger for everyone.
  • Hunger pains and stomach pain can feel similar; severe or persistent stomach pain needs medical help straight away.
  • Eat regular, balanced meals and keep up with your prescriber's reviews. Do not change your dose or injection timing yourself.
  • Weight-loss results are trial averages (SURMOUNT-1) and work alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.
  • Our prescribing team offers monthly reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support to existing customers.
In this guide

01 · Your next step

What to do if you get hunger pains on Mounjaro

The most useful first step is to tell your prescriber, not to change anything yourself. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection that activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 That is a tendency, not a switch. Some people notice hunger return, and it can feel like a gnawing or cramping in the stomach.

Three questions help you decide what is going on. First, is this a new pattern or a long-running one? Second, does it follow a particular meal, a skipped meal or a certain point in your week? Third, is it actually hunger, or is it pain that feels different from your usual hunger? A short note kept for two weeks (meal times, what you ate, when the pang came, and the day of your injection) gives a prescriber far more to work with than "I feel hungry".

That judgement needs your history, your current dose and your progress, which is what the free consultation and the monthly reviews are for. Our guide to having no hunger on Mounjaro covers the opposite problem.

03 · Costs and ordering

What continuing treatment costs and how ordering works

If you are weighing up whether to start or continue, here is the cost picture. Switching to us at a higher dose? A first 15mg order is £289.99. Standard monthly prices, before discounts, are £218.99 at 5mg, £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg, £319.99 at 12.5mg and £329.99 at 15mg. All six doses are in stock. You can see them on the Mounjaro pen page.

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year (13 pens) costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. Those totals are before discounts; a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less.

Ordering has four steps:

  • Free online consultation. A short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation. Start it on our free consultation page.
  • Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispensing and dispatch. Our registered pharmacy dispenses your pen, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
  • Delivery. Free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping or subscription lock-in. You can also browse the Buy Mounjaro hub or compare all weight loss treatments.

04 · How Mounjaro affects hunger

How Mounjaro affects hunger

Mounjaro affects hunger by acting on two gut-hormone pathways at once. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient, activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin.1 It is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and comes as a once-weekly KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

The practical effect described in the product information is that most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.13 The medicine shifts how strongly appetite signals come through and how long food feels filling. It does not remove the body's ability to feel hunger.

Slower stomach emptying is part of this picture. Food stays in the stomach for longer, which supports the feeling of fullness. It is also one reason people sometimes pay more attention to their stomach on this treatment, whether that is fullness after a small meal or a rumbling, empty feeling later on.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days.1 In plain terms, the medicine is cleared gradually rather than switching on and off with each injection, and after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed that up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.

It also helps to separate three things people call "hunger": true physical hunger, the habit of wanting food at certain times, and the urge to eat for comfort or boredom. Habits and emotional eating still need their own strategies, which is why the licence says treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

If you want a broader explainer on how this class of medicine relates to appetite, our GLP-1 hunger guide covers the topic from the medicine-class angle.

05 · Why hunger may still happen

Why hunger pains may still happen

Hunger pains may still happen because Mounjaro reduces appetite for most people rather than abolishing it. The product information describes people feeling fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.13

There are several ordinary, non-clinical reasons a person may notice hunger more at certain times, and they are worth checking before assuming the medicine is "not working":

  • Long gaps between meals. Going many hours without eating can bring on the familiar empty-stomach feeling, with or without medication.
  • Small or unbalanced meals. A meal that is mostly one thing may leave you wanting food sooner than a balanced plate would.
  • Routine and cues. If you usually snack at 4pm, your body and habits may expect it even when you are not truly hungry.
  • Where you are in treatment. Treatment usually starts at 2.5mg and moves up through the doses with prescriber oversight, so the effect you notice early on may differ from later.
  • Sleep, stress and activity. Tiredness and stress can make food feel more appealing.

None of them replaces a clinical review.

The question "why am I suddenly getting hunger pains?" deserves a careful answer. A sudden change is worth noting down, particularly if it comes with other symptoms. If the change is in your pattern (for example you were comfortably full on the same dose for weeks and now feel hungry most of the day), mention it at your next monthly review. If it comes with severe or persistent pain, vomiting or feeling very unwell, get medical help straight away.

Hunger is also not a measure of whether the medicine is working. Because some people feel less hungry and others only a little less, you cannot judge your progress from appetite alone. Weight, measurements, how your clothes fit and how you feel are all more reliable guides, and your prescriber will look at these together.

Our guide to hunger pangs on Mounjaro covers how people describe the sensation.

06 · Hunger pain or stomach pain

How to tell hunger pain from stomach pain

Hunger pain usually eases when you eat; other stomach pain often does not. That is a general rule of thumb, not a diagnosis, and it should never delay you getting help if something feels wrong.

Things that point toward ordinary hunger include a gnawing or rumbling feeling that builds as the gap since your last meal grows, relief after eating a reasonable meal, and a pattern that follows your meal times. Things that suggest it may be something else include pain that is sharp, constant or getting worse, pain that comes on or worsens after eating, pain with vomiting, pain you cannot explain, or pain that wakes you at night.

If your symptom does not fit the ordinary-hunger pattern, speak to a prescriber or pharmacist. If it is severe, worsening or you feel very unwell, get medical help straight away. Do not wait for a scheduled review. Our guide on stomach pains on Mounjaro covers this in more detail.

Is stomach pain a listed effect of tirzepatide? Yes. Stomach pain is listed in the UK patient leaflet as a very common side effect, affecting more than 1 in 10 people. If you notice any new or lasting symptom that you think may be linked to your medicine, tell your prescriber and report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

Keeping a short symptom diary makes the conversation easier. Note the time of day, how long since you last ate, what you ate, how long the sensation lasted, whether eating helped, and the day of your weekly injection. If you are reporting a possible side effect, the Yellow Card form asks for the medicine, the symptom and when it started, so having your notes to hand saves time.19

Also keep your regular medicines in mind. If you take other tablets or injections, tell your prescriber about any new symptom, as the whole medication picture matters when working out what is going on. Our prescribing team can look at this as part of your ongoing review.

07 · Hunger and weight loss

Do hunger pains mean you are losing weight?

Hunger pains are not a reliable sign of weight loss, and their absence is not a sign of failure. Feeling hungry tells you about your body's appetite signals at that moment; it does not measure how much fat you have lost.

In SURMOUNT-1, which included 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2

As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result.

So what should you watch instead of hunger? Practical markers include your weight trend over several weeks rather than day to day, your waist and clothes fit, your energy, and how manageable your eating plan feels. Weekly weigh-ins fluctuate with fluid, so look at the direction over a month. Your prescriber's monthly review will look at the same measures alongside your dose and any side effects.

It is also worth knowing that weight loss and hunger can go in different directions. Someone can feel quite hungry and still be losing weight on a reduced-calorie plan, and someone can feel full all the time yet not be eating a balanced diet. Neither pattern is a verdict on the medicine on its own.

If you feel your progress has stalled and hunger is part of why, that is a good reason to ask for a review rather than to push through alone. The review can consider whether your current dose, your meal pattern or something else is the main issue. Our no-hunger guide looks at what it can mean when appetite drops very low, which is the opposite end of the spectrum.

08 · Dose review and titration

Dose review and titration

Dose changes should come from a prescriber, not from how hungry you feel on a given day. Mounjaro is supplied in six strengths, 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg, and the starting pen is 2.5mg.1 A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable; after at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.11

Aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping.

How should you prepare for a review about hunger? Bring your diary, your current dose and how long you have been on it, any other symptoms, and your questions. Be specific: "I feel hungry in the evenings most days and snack more than I would like" is more useful than "I am hungry". Tell the prescriber about anything that worries you, including pain.

If you feel the medicine is not controlling your appetite, the right route is a review.

If you step up after at least 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices before discounts. The Mounjaro pen page shows the live prices.

09 · Eating, water and calories

Eating, water and calories on Mounjaro

Eating regular, balanced meals is the simplest practical response to hunger pains, and it fits the licence. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Your prescriber can set a plan that suits you.

What happens if you do not eat on Mounjaro? Eating very little can itself cause an empty, uncomfortable feeling in the stomach and can leave you feeling tired. If you are struggling to eat at all, or eating much less than you planned, tell your prescriber.

What if you do not drink enough water? Staying hydrated is ordinary good health advice; if you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, as dehydration needs medical help straight away.

How many calories a day? This is a good question for your monthly review.

Can you lose weight on Mounjaro without dieting? The licence and the SURMOUNT-1 trial both frame treatment as working alongside diet and exercise. In the trial, people on tirzepatide lost on average 15% to 20.9% of body weight on 5mg to 15mg, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone, but those results came with a reduced-calorie diet and activity, and individual results vary.2

How can you speed up weight loss? We do not offer a shortcut. Sticking to your plan, attending reviews and taking the medicine as prescribed are the dependable routes. Severely cutting food is not something we advise.

Practical habits that many people find useful: plan meals so you are not caught hungry with nothing suitable to hand; include protein and fibre-rich foods in meals; keep a regular eating pattern; and eat slowly, noticing when you feel satisfied. If a food makes you feel unwell, note it and mention it to your prescriber. Our free GLPTrackr companion app (iOS and Android) can help you log meals, doses and symptoms in one place, which makes review conversations easier.

10 · NHS and private access

NHS and private access to Mounjaro

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

On the NHS, support around a weight-management medicine varies by service. If you are on an NHS pathway and have questions about hunger, your GP or the weight-management team is the right contact.

Privately, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.

Price is part of the private picture. Pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens at any dose run from £143.96 to £339.00 per month (checked 12 October 2026), and starting 2.5mg pens from £143.96 to £179.99. Boots' Mounjaro doses run from £179.00 to £339.00.

What does EverydayMeds offer? We are a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration 9012878), supplying Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. They are genuine KwikPens, and all six doses are stocked. The consultation is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. The price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees, and you can pay by Visa, Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions.

Beware of counterfeit or unregulated sellers. Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is not operating safely. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts, and you can check any UK pharmacy on the GPhC register.712 Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat or on 0333 207 0413.

11 · When to get help

When to get help and what to expect

Speak to your prescriber when hunger is constant. If pain is new, severe or persistent, or you feel very unwell, get medical help straight away. For most people, an occasional pang is something to note and mention at the next review. Anything more should lead to a conversation sooner.

Here is a simple way to sort your situation:

  • Occasional hunger between meals. Common to wonder about. Try regular, balanced meals, keep notes and raise it at your monthly review.
  • Regular hunger that makes your plan hard to follow. Contact your prescriber. This is exactly what dose-review and follow-up assessments are for.
  • Pain that does not feel like hunger. Speak to a prescriber or pharmacist.
  • Severe pain, persistent vomiting or feeling very unwell. Get medical help straight away.
  • Any suspected side effect. Report it through the Yellow Card scheme, which helps the MHRA monitor medicine safety.19

What about hunger after stopping Mounjaro? Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 If you are thinking of stopping, talk to your prescriber first so you have a plan for eating and follow-up. Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.14 Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

Is there anything else that might help day to day? Many people find that tracking helps them see patterns they would otherwise miss. The free GLPTrackr companion app is there for that. Pair it with a few simple habits: do not skip meals, plan snacks that fit your plan and avoid comparing your experience to anyone else's, because appetite responses differ so much from person to person.

If you are not yet a customer and want to know whether Mounjaro could suit you, the next step is the free, no-obligation consultation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Ongoing customers have monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, plus side-effect support from the prescribing team. For wider reading on body symptoms people ask about, see our guide to body aches and Mounjaro side effects.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Do you get hunger pains on Mounjaro?
Some people do. Mounjaro helps most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, but it reduces appetite rather than removing it, so hunger or stomach pangs can still occur and vary from person to person. If hunger is constant or interfering with your eating plan, tell your prescriber at your monthly review. Do not change your dose yourself. If the pain feels different from hunger or is new, speak to your prescriber or pharmacist; if it is severe or persistent, get medical help straight away.
Why am I suddenly getting hunger pains?
Ordinary factors are worth checking first: a long gap since your last meal, a smaller or less balanced meal than usual, poor sleep, stress or a change in routine. Note when the pangs happen, what you ate and the day of your injection. If the change persists or is new for you, contact your prescriber or pharmacist. If it comes with severe pain or vomiting, or you feel very unwell, get medical help straight away.
Do hunger pains mean you are losing weight?
No. Hunger reflects your appetite signals at that moment, not how much weight you have lost, and feeling hungry is not a sign of failure either. Weight is better judged by trends over several weeks. In SURMOUNT-1, people on tirzepatide with diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. Individual results vary and trial averages do not predict your own result.
How to tell if stomach pain is just hunger?
Hunger pain usually builds as time since your last meal grows and eases once you eat a reasonable meal. Pain that is sharp, constant, worsening, comes on after eating, wakes you at night or comes with vomiting does not fit that pattern. This is general common sense, not a diagnosis. If you are unsure, speak to a prescriber or pharmacist; if pain is severe or you feel very unwell, get medical help straight away. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What happens if you don't eat on Mounjaro?
Eating very little can itself cause an empty, uncomfortable stomach and leave you feeling tired. If you are finding it hard to eat, or you are eating far less than planned, tell your prescriber so they can review your dose and plan with you.
How many calories a day do you eat on Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so a plan is part of treatment. Ask your prescriber at a monthly review for guidance suited to you. Our free GLPTrackr companion app can help you log meals and see patterns to discuss.
How to speed up weight loss on Mounjaro?
We do not offer a shortcut. The dependable routes are taking the medicine exactly as prescribed, following a reduced-calorie diet, staying active and attending your reviews, where your prescriber can look at your dose and progress. Trial results like SURMOUNT-1 are averages over 72 weeks, and individual results vary.
What happens if you don't drink enough water on Mounjaro?
Staying hydrated is ordinary good health advice. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, as dehydration needs medical help straight away. If you think a symptom may be a side effect of your medicine, report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme and mention it at your review.
Can you lose weight on Mounjaro without dieting?
Mounjaro is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% to 20.9% of body weight on 5mg to 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. Those results came with a diet and activity programme, and individual results vary, so we do not suggest relying on the medicine alone.
What foods should I avoid on Mounjaro?
The licence asks for a reduced-calorie diet and more activity alongside treatment. If a particular food or large meal makes you feel unwell, note it and mention it to your prescriber, who can give advice that suits your health and medicines. Keeping a food and symptom diary, or using the free GLPTrackr app, makes that conversation easier.
