Diet for Mounjaro Weight Loss: What to Eat (October 2026)

There is no official Mounjaro diet: no food is banned, and the aim is a sustainable calorie deficit built on protein at every meal, vegetables and fibre, regular fluids and smaller, slower portions.1 Mounjaro is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • No food is banned on Mounjaro, but fatty, fried and very sugary meals and large portions tend to feel worst.
  • Include a protein source at every meal, especially as appetite falls and the dose rises.
  • Smaller, slower meals work better because the stomach empties more slowly on treatment.
  • Keep fluids going through the day; if you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away.
  • Eating very little is not the goal: the aim is a sustainable deficit alongside activity and muscle-protecting exercise.
In this guide

01 · The short version

What should you eat on Mounjaro for weight loss?

Eat regular, smaller meals built around protein and vegetables, with a modest portion of starchy carbohydrate and a little healthy fat. That is not a special plan. It is a sensible reduced-calorie diet, which is exactly what the licence assumes.1 Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows stomach emptying, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 Your job is to use that quieter appetite to eat well, rather than to eat almost nothing.

No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas. Some choices simply make treatment easier and more effective.1 Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better.13

Food groupWhat to favourWhat to go easy on
ProteinFish, poultry, eggs, tofu, beans, lentils, Greek-style yoghurt, cottage cheeseFatty processed meats, deep-fried coatings
Vegetables and fruitLeafy greens, broccoli, peppers, carrots, berries, whole fruitVery large raw salads if they leave you bloated
Starchy carbohydrateOats, wholegrain bread, brown rice, potatoes, pasta in a modest portionOversized bowls and refined sugary cereals
FatsOlive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds in small amountsFried food, rich creamy sauces, greasy takeaways
DrinksWater, tea, coffee, sugar-free squashSugary drinks, alcohol, high-calorie coffee drinks

Think of the table as a lean-in guide, not a rulebook. A pasta supper that fits your portion is fine; a very rich, greasy meal eaten fast is what tends to cause trouble.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to you, and what comes next?

If you already take Mounjaro, shape your meals around the dose you are on. If you are still weighing up treatment, remember that medication is one part of a plan that also includes food and movement. Our guide to Mounjaro weight loss explains what treatment involves, and predicted weight loss on Mounjaro sets out realistic expectations.

When you are ready, the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starting dose, with every order following a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Our weight loss clinic page explains the wider service.

03 · Meals and portions

How to structure meals on Mounjaro

Aim for regular, modest meals rather than skipping them. Because appetite is lower, it is easy to drift into grazing or missing meals entirely, and that makes it harder to get enough protein and nutrients. A simple rhythm of a breakfast, a lunch and an evening meal, with a planned snack if you need one, keeps energy steady.

Portions matter more than they used to. Large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so serve yourself less than you would have before treatment and go back for more only if you are genuinely still hungry.1 Eating slowly gives your fullness signals time to catch up, and stopping at comfortable rather than full is a good habit to build.

If you want a structured template, our practical weekly meal guide shows how to lay out a week, and our article on building a weight loss diet you can keep covers the habits behind it. For the wider picture across this medicine class, see our GLP-1 weight loss diet guide.

04 · Protein and muscle

Protein and keeping your muscle

Protein is the nutrient to protect first. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.1 The two levers are adequate protein — aim to include a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low — and resistance exercise two or more times a week.1 This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.

In practice, put the protein on your plate first and eat it before the rest. Eggs or yoghurt at breakfast, fish, chicken, tofu or beans at lunch and dinner, and a protein-led snack all help. If appetite is very low, small protein-rich portions spread across the day are easier than a large serving at one sitting.

05 · Breakfast, snacks, dinner

Breakfast, snack and dinner ideas

Good Mounjaro meals are simple, protein-led and not too rich. These are ideas, not prescriptions, and you should adjust them for your own tolerances, allergies and any medical advice you have.

Breakfast. Porridge made with milk and topped with berries and a spoonful of seeds, eggs on wholegrain toast, or plain yoghurt with fruit and nuts. If mornings are queasy, something small and plain such as toast with egg is gentler than a heavy cooked breakfast.

Snacks. Greek-style yoghurt, a boiled egg, hummus with vegetable sticks, cottage cheese with fruit, a small handful of nuts, or an edamame pod snack. Keep portions modest, because nuts and cheese are calorie-dense.

Lunch and dinner. Grilled or baked fish with roast vegetables and potatoes, chicken and vegetable stir-fry with a small portion of rice, lentil soup with bread, bean chilli, or tofu curry with plenty of vegetables. Baking, grilling, steaming and poaching are kinder than deep-frying.

On injection day or the day after, especially when you start or step up a dose, choose lighter, blander meals if you feel unsettled. Many people find that fatty or very sugary food is what tips them into feeling unwell.13

06 · Pasta, carbs and fats

Can you eat pasta and carbohydrates on Mounjaro?

Yes, you can eat pasta on Mounjaro, because no food is banned.1 What changes is the portion and the company it keeps. A modest bowl of pasta with a tomato-based sauce, plenty of vegetables and a protein source such as chicken, prawns, lentils or tuna is a balanced meal. A very large bowl in a rich, creamy sauce is more likely to sit heavily, because the stomach empties more slowly on treatment.13

Wholegrain options such as oats, brown rice, wholemeal bread and wholewheat pasta add fibre, which suits a lower appetite and a plate built around vegetables. White rice, potatoes and ordinary pasta are not forbidden. They just take up room that protein and vegetables could use, so keep them as a side rather than the main event.

Fats follow the same logic. Small amounts of olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds are fine. Fried and very fatty meals are the ones many people regret. Since fat is calorie-dense, it also pays to measure oil rather than pour it, because the goal remains a sustainable deficit.1

07 · Fluids, coffee, alcohol

Hydration, coffee and alcohol

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.1 Keep water within reach through the day. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

Coffee and tea are fine, because there is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine.1 Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. The "coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.

There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals.1 If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule.

08 · Supplements and exercise

Vitamins, supplements and exercise

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.1 Products sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra.1 Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle. Start where you are and build. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

09 · What the trial shows

What the trial evidence says about diet and results

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

The message for your plate is that the medicine and the diet work together. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and how well you eat, move and stay consistent is part of what shapes it. For real-world context see our pages on the biggest weight loss on Mounjaro and what is in Mounjaro for weight loss.

10 · Access and support

Getting treatment and support with eating

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you choose private treatment with us, your free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support come with the service. Dispatch is the same day when you order by 3pm, with free next-day tracked delivery. Our overview of prescription diet injections compares the options, and our page on Mounjaro experiences explains how to read personal stories sensibly.

Report any suspected side effect, including new symptoms, through the Yellow Card scheme and discuss it with your prescriber.19

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is there a best diet for losing weight on Mounjaro?
There is no single diet that suits everyone. Mounjaro is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity, so choose an approach you can sustain: protein at every meal, plenty of vegetables and fibre, modest starchy carbohydrate, regular fluids and smaller, slower portions. Consistency matters more than a perfect food list.
Can you lose weight on Mounjaro without eating?
Eating very little is not the aim. Mounjaro lowers appetite, but treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, meaning a sustainable deficit rather than starvation. Eating too little makes it harder to get enough protein and raises dehydration risk. If you struggle to eat or drink, tell your prescriber.
Can I eat pasta on Mounjaro?
Yes, no food is banned on Mounjaro. Keep the portion modest, add vegetables and a protein source, and favour lighter tomato-based sauces over very rich, creamy ones. Because the stomach empties more slowly, large heavy portions tend to feel uncomfortable. Wholegrain pasta adds fibre if you like it.
What snacks are good on Mounjaro?
Protein-led snacks work well: Greek-style yoghurt, a boiled egg, cottage cheese with fruit, hummus with vegetable sticks or a small handful of nuts. They help you reach your protein target when appetite is low. Keep portions modest, since nuts and cheese are calorie-dense, and limit sugary or fried snacks.
What's a good dinner on Mounjaro?
A good dinner is protein-led, vegetable-heavy and not too rich: grilled fish with roast vegetables, chicken stir-fry with a small portion of rice, lentil soup, bean chilli or tofu curry. Bake, grill or steam rather than deep-fry, and eat slowly in a smaller portion than before treatment.
What are some good ideas for a Mounjaro breakfast?
Try porridge with berries and seeds, eggs on wholegrain toast, or plain yoghurt with fruit and nuts. Include a protein source so you start the day well fed. If mornings feel queasy, especially after an injection or dose increase, choose something small and plain rather than a heavy fried breakfast.
What are the side effects of Mounjaro, and can diet help?
Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort affect more than 1 in 10 people. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention: seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Diet can ease some digestive discomfort: smaller, slower meals and avoiding very fatty, fried or sugary food help many people. Stay hydrated, and report any suspected side effect to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
What are some tips for using Mounjaro for weight loss?
Eat protein at every meal, keep portions smaller and slower, drink fluids through the day and add regular brisk walking plus resistance exercise. Consider a standard daily multivitamin, go easy on alcohol, and keep in touch with your prescriber for reviews. Medicine works alongside diet and activity, not instead of them.
