Appetite Suppressant Definition: What It Means (October 2026)
An appetite suppressant is any medicine, supplement or substance that reduces hunger or increases the feeling of fullness, so that you eat less. Some work on the brain's hunger signals, some mimic gut hormones, and some are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight. In the UK, prescription options are supplied only after a clinical assessment.

01 · Definition
What does appetite suppressant mean?
An appetite suppressant is something that lowers your desire to eat. That might mean feeling less hungry between meals, feeling full sooner during a meal, or having fewer food cravings. The goal is usually a lower calorie intake without constant willpower.
You will also see the terms appetite suppression, anorectic and anorexiant. They all describe the same basic effect: reduced appetite. The word covers very different things, from carefully tested prescription medicines to cheap supplements sold with dramatic weight-loss claims. Treating them as one category is the main source of confusion.
02 · Is this for you?
Is a prescription appetite suppressant relevant to you?
It may be if you are an adult living with overweight or obesity and diet and activity changes alone have not been enough. Licensed treatments are intended for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and they are not a shortcut. Suitability is decided by a prescriber, based on your health history, other medicines and goals.
If you simply feel hungry more often than you would like, a supplement is rarely the answer. Persistent changes in appetite, in either direction, are worth raising with your GP. If you want to understand your options, our weight loss clinic explains how a free consultation works, and our guide to prescription appetite suppressant injections covers the injectable route in detail.
If treatment is appropriate, the Mounjaro pen is available from a standard price of £169.99 for the 2.5mg starter. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, and a reorder discount applies to every future order.
03 · Types of appetite suppressant
Types of appetite suppressant
Appetite suppressants fall into three broad groups, and the group matters more than the label.
- Prescription medicines. These are licensed, tested in clinical trials and supplied only after assessment. Mechanisms differ: some act on brain chemistry, others mimic gut hormones.
- Over-the-counter products. These often rely on ingredients such as fibre to add bulk and a sense of fullness. Their effect is modest compared with licensed medicines.
- Supplements and herbal products. These are low-cost, sold without assessment, and dosing is not standardised. Marketing phrases such as "nature's Ozempic" are not evidence, and such products are not equivalent to prescription medicines.
Within prescription options, the modern gut-hormone injectables are the best known. Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Wegovy is a once-weekly semaglutide injection, while liraglutide is a daily injection supplied at 6mg/ml, unlike the once-weekly options.

04 · How they work
How appetite suppressants work
Appetite is controlled by signals between your gut, hormones and brain, and suppressants interfere with those signals in different ways. Some medicines act on brain chemicals that govern hunger. Others copy natural gut hormones released after eating.
Mounjaro belongs to the second group. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
Because it slows stomach emptying, Mounjaro can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 For the specific medicine, see our Mounjaro definition page.
05 · Do they really work?
Do appetite suppressants really work?
It depends entirely on the product. Licensed prescription medicines have been studied in large, long clinical trials and have measurable results. Most supplements have not been tested to the same standard, so their claims should be treated with caution.
For tirzepatide, the SURMOUNT-1 trial is the main reference, and individual results vary. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and the medicine is intended for use alongside diet and activity changes. A medicine that reduces appetite makes eating less easier; it does not remove the need for healthy habits.
Appetite suppressants also have side effects, and your prescriber should talk these through before you start. If you experience a new symptom, tell your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
06 · Safety and the opposite effect
Safety, scams and the opposite effect
Be wary of anyone offering to supply a prescription appetite suppressant without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit and unregulated products circulate online, and the MHRA publishes alerts about them.7 Check that a pharmacy appears on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878.
Some medicines have the reverse effect and increase hunger. If you are curious about that, see our page on the opposite of an appetite suppressant. Traditional approaches are covered in Ayurveda appetite suppressants, and individual ingredients in L-phenylalanine as an appetite suppressant. For budget products, see appetite suppressant savers.
07 · NHS and private access
NHS and private access
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Privately, the process starts with a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
