Danish Company Behind the Weight Loss Drug: Novo Nordisk (October 2026)

The Danish company behind the best-known weight loss drugs is Novo Nordisk, now branded simply as Novo. It makes Wegovy and Ozempic (both semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide). Mounjaro is not Danish: it is tirzepatide, made by the American company Eli Lilly.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Novo Nordisk is the Danish maker of Wegovy, Ozempic and Saxenda; Eli Lilly, an American company, makes Mounjaro.
  • Wegovy is semaglutide for weight management, Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, and Saxenda is a daily liraglutide injection.
  • Company share performance and drug quality are different questions.
  • Mounjaro works on two gut-hormone receptors, which distinguishes it from semaglutide medicines.
  • Whichever company makes it, these are prescription-only medicines that need a prescriber's review.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Which Danish company makes the weight loss drug?

Novo Nordisk, which has rebranded as Novo, is the Danish company behind Wegovy, Ozempic and Saxenda. It is headquartered in Denmark and makes semaglutide and liraglutide medicines. Its weight management products are Wegovy and Saxenda, while Ozempic is its semaglutide injection for type 2 diabetes.

The medicine most often confused with these is Mounjaro. It is a different molecule from a different company. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, and in the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 If you want the Lilly side of the story, our guide to the company behind Mounjaro covers it.

02 · What to do next

Is the company behind a drug something you need to decide on?

For most patients, no. The company matters less than the medicine, your health history and what a prescriber judges suitable for you. Both firms make licensed treatments, and neither is a shortcut: each is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1

The practical questions are different. Do you meet the licensed criteria? Do you prefer a daily or weekly injection? What can you afford month to month? If you want to explore the Mounjaro route, our Mounjaro pen page shows live prices, with the 2.5mg starting pen at £169.99 per month as of 10 October 2026. Our wider weight loss clinic explains how a consultation works.

03 · Novo's medicines

What Novo Nordisk makes for weight loss

Novo's best-known products are semaglutide injections and one liraglutide injection. Wegovy is the weight management brand. Ozempic is the diabetes brand, which many people also associate with weight loss because the active ingredient is the same.

Wegovy is given once weekly. Its pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, and the dose steps up after at least four weeks, reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17. The 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18

Saxenda, and products such as Erly, contain liraglutide, supplied at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre. It is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Wegovy and Mounjaro.

Novo has also moved into tablets. Wegovy tablets, an oral semaglutide, have their own product information.20

04 · Ozempic versus Wegovy

Ozempic, Wegovy and why the names blur

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, but they are separate brands with separate licences. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, whereas Wegovy is the brand licensed for weight management.18

Mounjaro is not Ozempic, and it is not made by the same company. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. Anyone offering a medicine to you should be able to name the exact product, strength and manufacturer, and should supply it only after a consultation and prescription.

It is also worth being sceptical of anything described as "nature's Ozempic". Low-cost supplements sold under that kind of label have no clinical oversight and no link to the licensed medicine.

05 · How Mounjaro differs

How Mounjaro differs from Novo's semaglutide

The main scientific difference is the mechanism. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1

Separate trials enrol different people and are not head-to-head evidence. Your prescriber can explain how published results relate to your own situation, and your result may differ from any trial average.

06 · The Danish connection

Why Denmark is part of the weight loss story

Denmark is home to Novo, and the company's success has had visible effects there.

For a UK patient this has no direct bearing on treatment. You are not buying from Denmark, and where a medicine was developed has no effect on whether it suits you. What matters is that it is a licensed product dispensed by a registered pharmacy. You can check any UK pharmacy on the GPhC register; ours is registration GPhC 9012878.

07 · Older weight loss drugs

Weight loss drugs of the past

Weight loss medicines have a mixed history, which is part of why careful licensing matters. Earlier products such as fen-phen, Meridia and Belviq were withdrawn from sale.

Today's treatments are prescription-only, with product information, a Yellow Card system for reporting side effects and ongoing monitoring.19 If you notice a new symptom while on treatment, discuss it with your prescriber and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

08 · NHS access

Getting treatment through the NHS

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

09 · Choosing a safe supplier

Choosing a safe supplier, whichever brand

The safest route is a UK-registered pharmacy that supplies only after a consultation. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.7 Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, or who promises specific results.

With us, the consultation is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. We supply genuine Mounjaro KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, and orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Mounjaro is in stock across all six doses.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What Danish company makes Ozempic?
Ozempic is made by Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company that now brands itself simply as Novo. It is a semaglutide injection licensed for type 2 diabetes. The same company makes Wegovy, which is the semaglutide brand for weight management, and Saxenda, a daily liraglutide injection. Mounjaro is a different medicine from a different company, Eli Lilly.
Which weight loss drug is best?
No licensed medicine is best for everyone. Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) are all licensed, and results vary between individuals. In the first large head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5), tirzepatide and semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) were compared directly; trial averages do not predict your own result. A prescriber can advise which licensed option suits your health and goals.
What is the new weight loss pill coming out?
Tablet options now have their own UK product information: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron). Both are prescription-only and have separate prescribing details from the injections.
