03 · Mounjaro basics

What follow-up is supervising

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection made by Eli Lilly, supplied as a pre-filled KwikPen in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg.¹ It activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows stomach emptying, so most people feel fuller sooner.¹

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.² For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

04 · Lifestyle support

Diet, protein and activity between reviews

Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so good follow-up covers both.¹ Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables, fibre and regular fluids, and choose smaller, slower meals because the stomach empties more slowly. Resistance exercise two or more times a week helps protect muscle, and brisk walking counts too. Keep water within reach, and if nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.

05 · NHS or private

NHS and private routes

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment. 06 · Interactions and safety

Medicines to tell your prescriber about

Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start or raise the dose. Tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin or sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.¹
