A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Two months is about two pens, so most people only reach the 2.5mg and 5mg doses, which are the early steps on the dose ladder.
  • Trial results were measured over 72 weeks. A 2-month course will not look like the headline averages, and results vary.
  • Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after your last dose.
  • Mounjaro is licensed as a once-weekly injection. Do not change the interval yourself; ask your prescriber.
  • Tell your prescriber if you plan to stop. We can review how treatment is going and talk through the next step with you.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Can you take Mounjaro for just 2 months?

Yes, you can take Mounjaro for two months and then stop. It is a prescription medicine reviewed by a prescriber, not a fixed-length programme, and you are free to end treatment at any point. The more useful question is what two months can realistically do for you.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection in a multi-dose KwikPen, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is started at 2.5mg and stepped up through six strengths. Over eight weeks, that normally means one 2.5mg pen followed by one 5mg pen.

The 2.5mg weeks are an adjustment phase, and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.1 So a two-month course ends just as the dose starts to do its main work. That is the central trade-off of stopping early.

Two months is therefore a legitimate choice if you have a clear reason. Examples are a side effect you cannot tolerate, a change in circumstances, or a decision to try a different plan. It is a weaker choice if the aim is a lasting change in weight, because the trials behind the headline results ran for far longer.

02 · Cost

What two months of Mounjaro costs

Two months means two pens. At standard prices, the Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 at 2.5mg and £218.99 at 5mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with the code, against a standard price of £169.99.

The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. There are no subscriptions, so nothing renews unless you choose to reorder, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

If cost is the reason you are considering a short course, it is worth comparing a longer plan before you decide. Our overview of all weight loss treatments sets out the other routes, and Klarna and pay-monthly options can spread the cost of Mounjaro itself.

03 · Decision guide

Short course or longer: how to decide

The right length depends on your reason for stopping and on what you hope to keep afterwards. The table sets out the main trade-offs.

04 · What 8 weeks achieves

What two months on Mounjaro actually achieves

Two months usually delivers a modest, early result. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, and trials measured results at 72 weeks, so the right frame is months rather than days.1 Two months sits well short of that.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. They describe the end of a long course, not the first eight weeks.

To put a number on it: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That figure belongs to 72 weeks on the 15mg dose, and it is not a prediction for a two-month course.

At three months, a sensible expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. Slower early progress does not predict failure, because the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you.1 Two months is earlier than that three-month point, so expect less rather than more. For a closer look at the pace, see what people can expect before and after two months.

05 · First weeks: normal effects

The first weeks: what is normal

The 2.5mg starting weeks are about adjustment, and experiences differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, while others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal.1

Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects, and they usually settle.1 The patient information leaflet lists the full range of possible side effects.13

This matters for a two-month plan in one practical way. If you judge the medicine at week three or four, you are judging the adjustment phase, not the dose that may suit you. If a side effect is troubling you, tell your prescriber rather than quietly stopping. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

06 · What happens when you stop

What happens when you stop Mounjaro

When you stop, the medicine clears slowly over several weeks. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

Mounjaro works by activating the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 That effect depends on the medicine being present. As it clears, expect your appetite to return to how it was before treatment.

In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.14 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it, and stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

If you want to keep what you have gained, the habits you build in these eight weeks do the work once the medicine has gone. Those habits are protein, regular activity, portion awareness and sleep. Ask your prescriber how to plan the stop. A conversation about next steps, whether that is pausing, continuing or changing approach, is part of the monthly review. Our guide on whether you can take GLP-1 treatment for just a few months goes wider than Mounjaro.

07 · Why people stop early

Common reasons for stopping at two months

People stop at two months for a handful of recurring reasons, and each has a better answer than simply stopping.

  • Side effects. Nausea, altered appetite and tiredness are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1 If they do not, your prescriber can discuss the dose with you, and the patient information leaflet lists what to watch for.13
  • Cost. Look at the whole plan first, including £959.96 for the first four pens at standard prices, with the first order £40 less.
  • Slow early results. Slow early progress does not predict failure, and the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you.1
  • A plateau. Plateaus of a few weeks are normal as the body adapts to a lower weight. A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.1
  • Life getting in the way. Holidays, illness or a busy period are real reasons. Tell the prescribing team so your next step is planned rather than improvised.

None of these obliges you to continue. They are simply worth separating from a decision that the medicine is not working, which is usually too early to judge at eight weeks.

08 · Plateaus and 'is it working'

Plateaus, slow weeks and judging progress

Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear, and a plateau of a few weeks is normal. If you hit one before your two-month mark, the licensed responses are to review food intake honestly because portions drift back up, protect protein and activity, and check the basics such as sleep and alcohol. Then discuss with your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum.1

Judge progress by trend, not by individual weigh-ins. Early loss includes water weight, so a single reading can mislead you in either direction. The free GLPTrackr companion app (iOS and Android) lets you log your journey so the trend is easier to see.

Treatment response is formally reviewed by your prescriber. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1

09 · Dosing interval and BMI

Every 2 weeks, maintenance and BMI questions

Mounjaro is licensed as a once-weekly injection, and the interval is not something to adjust on your own.1

On eligibility, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.111

A BMI under 27 sits outside the licensed use for weight management, and a BMI between 27 and 30 needs at least one weight-related condition. Your prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable for you.1 Mounjaro is also used for type 2 diabetes, which is a different clinical context, as we explain in whether Mounjaro is just for weight loss.

10 · NHS and private routes

NHS and private treatment length

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Private treatment gives you more control over timing, and also more responsibility for planning how long you stay on it. Whichever route you take, a short course is a decision to make with your prescriber rather than around them.

If you are weighing a three-month plan against two months, our pages on whether you can just take Mounjaro for 3 months and whether you can do Mounjaro for just 3 months cover that step. If you are looking specifically at the starting dose, see staying on 2.5mg for two months.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can you use Mounjaro short term?
Yes, you can use Mounjaro for a short period, because a prescriber-led course can be ended whenever you decide. The trade-off is that a short course stays on the early doses, and the trials behind the headline results ran for 72 weeks. Talk to your prescriber before stopping so the next step is planned. Our guide to taking Mounjaro for 2 months only goes through this in more detail.
Can you stop taking Mounjaro after 3 months?
Yes, you can stop after three months. A sensible three-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation, and the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you. Tell your prescriber you are stopping. The medicine takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after your last dose.
Can you stay on Mounjaro 2.5 for 8 weeks?
The 2.5mg pen is the starting dose and covers the first adjustment weeks. Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week; after at least 4 weeks the dose can increase to 5mg, depending on how you respond. Your prescriber will guide the right pace, so raise it at your monthly review.
What is the lowest BMI requirement for Mounjaro maintenance?
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure or prediabetes. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable, and reviews that at each step.
Do you gain weight back after stopping Mounjaro?
Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load. Ask your prescriber how to plan the transition.
Can I take Mounjaro if my BMI is less than 30?
Possibly, but only with a BMI between 27 and 30 and at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. A BMI under 27 is outside the licensed weight-management use. A prescriber assesses your suitability through the free consultation.
