A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) substantially reduced obstructive sleep apnoea severity in adults with obesity in the SURMOUNT-OSA trials.
  • The benefit is linked to weight loss, so it applies to sleep apnoea in people living with obesity, not to every cause of disturbed sleep.
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea counts as a weight-related condition in the eligibility criteria.
  • If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed.
  • Mounjaro is prescription-only and supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

01 · The core answer

Does Mounjaro help with sleep apnoea?

Yes, for adults with obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea, the evidence is encouraging. In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, tirzepatide substantially reduced the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity — on average, breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year, and some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment.16

Those are trial averages, so they do not predict your own result. Some people improve a great deal, others less. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

It is also worth being clear about what it does not do. Mounjaro is a weight-management medicine. It is not a replacement for a sleep assessment, and it is not a treatment for snoring or poor sleep that has other causes. If you want the wider picture on sleep quality, see our guide on whether Mounjaro helps sleep.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to you?

It is most relevant if you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea, you are living with obesity, and you are already thinking about weight-loss treatment. Obstructive sleep apnoea also counts as a weight-related condition in the eligibility criteria.16 That matters because Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as obstructive sleep apnoea.1

If you have not been diagnosed but you snore loudly, wake unrefreshed or have been told you stop breathing in your sleep, speak to your GP first. A sleep assessment, not a weight-loss injection, is the right first step. For the prescribing side, read how Mounjaro is prescribed where sleep apnoea is involved.

If you are ready to explore treatment, you can start a free consultation for the Mounjaro pen. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and a prescriber reviews every request. You can also see our wider weight loss clinic.

03 · How it helps

How does Mounjaro help sleep apnoea?

Mounjaro helps mainly by supporting weight loss in adults with obesity. The trial authors studied tirzepatide specifically in adults with obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea, and the results were a substantial reduction in severity.16

The medicine works by activating the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which are natural gut-hormone receptors. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

In practice, the medicine supports a lower calorie intake, weight comes down, and in the SURMOUNT-OSA trials breathing interruptions during sleep fell.16

04 · What the trials found

What SURMOUNT-OSA found

SURMOUNT-OSA is the trial programme that tested tirzepatide in adults with obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea. The headline finding is that, on average, breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year.16 Some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment.16

It is worth reading that carefully. "Around half or more" is an average across participants. It does not mean every person halved their breathing interruptions, and it does not mean sleep apnoea disappeared. Some people had a smaller change and some had a larger one.

The weight-loss results behind this are separate and come from a different trial, so they should not be added together. In SURMOUNT-1 of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

For a worked example only: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is straight arithmetic on a trial average, not a forecast of what you will lose.

05 · CPAP and treatment

Should I stop CPAP if I take Mounjaro?

No. If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed.16 Mounjaro is not a reason to stop or change sleep apnoea treatment on your own.

What happens next is a conversation with your sleep clinic. As your weight changes, they may want to reassess how severe your sleep apnoea is and whether your current level of treatment is still right for you. That is a decision for your clinic, based on a repeat assessment, and not something to guess at from how you feel.

It helps to tell your sleep clinic when you start Mounjaro, and to tell our prescribing team about your sleep apnoea and any CPAP use during your consultation. Everything you share is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Our ongoing monthly reviews also give you a regular point to raise how your sleep is going.

06 · Reversing sleep apnoea

Can you reverse sleep apnoea by losing weight?

Weight loss can substantially reduce the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea in people with obesity, and in the trials some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment.16 That is not the same as a promise of reversal, and results vary.

Weight loss is also something you need to maintain. Stopping treatment can mean weight returns: in SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year.14 Talk to your prescriber about what long-term treatment looks like before you begin.

If you are weighing up other injectable options, our guides to weight loss injections for sleep apnoea and the wider GLP-1 class and sleep apnoea cover the comparison.

07 · Getting it on the NHS

Can you get Mounjaro for sleep apnoea on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.4 Ask your GP where you sit in your local rollout.

If you choose private treatment, a free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Our pharmacy is GPhC-registered (9012878) and supplies genuine Mounjaro KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply.

08 · Other sleep tips

What about pillow tricks, vitamins and drinks?

Be cautious of any product or technique that promises to cure sleep apnoea quickly or without assessment, and treat dramatic claims as a warning sign.

If you notice a new symptom after starting any medicine, discuss it with your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

09 · Next steps

What to do next

Start with your diagnosis. If you have not had a sleep assessment and you suspect sleep apnoea, see your GP. If you have been diagnosed, tell your sleep clinic you are considering Mounjaro and keep using CPAP if you have it.

If weight loss treatment is right for you, the process is straightforward. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Approved orders are dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can Mounjaro help with sleep apnoea?
Yes, in adults with obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea. In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, tirzepatide substantially reduced severity, and on average breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year. Results vary between people, and it works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Keep using CPAP if you have it.
How does tirzepatide help sleep apnoea?
Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties. Most people feel fuller sooner, which supports a reduced-calorie diet and weight loss. In people with obesity, that weight loss can reduce how severe obstructive sleep apnoea is. Individual results vary.
Which weight loss medicines are licensed in the UK?
The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). Your prescriber decides what suits you. A diagnosis and clinical review should come first.
Can you reverse sleep apnoea by losing weight?
Weight loss can substantially reduce obstructive sleep apnoea severity in people with obesity, and in the trials some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment. That is not a promise of reversal. Results vary. Your sleep clinic can reassess you.
Should I stop CPAP if I start Mounjaro?
No. If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed. Any change to your sleep apnoea treatment should be decided with your sleep clinic after a reassessment, not on your own. Tell our prescribing team about your CPAP use during your consultation too.
What other conditions does Mounjaro treat?
In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. Obstructive sleep apnoea counts as a weight-related condition in the eligibility criteria, and tirzepatide has been studied for it in adults with obesity. A prescriber can advise whether it is suitable for you.
Is there one best treatment for sleep apnoea?
No single treatment suits everyone; your sleep clinic decides. For adults with obesity, weight loss with a medicine such as Mounjaro may be added alongside it. Do not stop existing treatment without clinical advice.
Is Mounjaro for sleep apnoea available on the NHS?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years, with the highest-need groups first. Ask your GP where you fit locally. Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting, through a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
