Can Mounjaro Cause Loss of Taste? (October 2026)

Yes, possibly: "a changed sense of taste" is listed as an uncommon side effect (up to 1 in 100 people) in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet. Mounjaro does slow stomach emptying and changes appetite, so food can feel different, but that is not the same as losing taste. If your taste changes suddenly or lasts, speak to your prescriber or GP and report it via the Yellow Card scheme.19

In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is your taste change down to Mounjaro?

A changed sense of taste is listed in the UK patient leaflet as an uncommon side effect (up to 1 in 100 people), but other causes are also common, so look at timing and other causes too. Check the full side-effect list in the patient information leaflet.13

Ask yourself three things. Did it start with a cold, a mouth infection or a new medicine? Is your mouth dry because you are drinking less? Is it a complete loss, or does food simply seem less appealing? Your answers help your prescriber or GP work out what is going on.

02 · Next steps

What to do if your taste has changed

Tell the prescribing team, who can review your symptoms alongside your dose and general health. Our aftercare includes side-effect support, and treatment is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Do not stop or change your dose on your own without advice.

If the change is sudden, complete or lasting, get medical help straight away; if you have swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away. Taste changes can have causes that have nothing to do with weight-loss treatment. You can also report a suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

03 · What Mounjaro does

What Mounjaro actually does in the body

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.11 That change in appetite is real and well described. It is different from a loss of the sense of taste. For more on how appetite changes feel, see our guide on whether Mounjaro causes loss of appetite.

04 · Other causes of altered taste

Other common reasons food tastes different

Many everyday things change taste, and several can coincide with starting a new treatment. A blocked nose from a cold or allergy is the most familiar. Dry mouth from not drinking enough, reflux, poor oral hygiene, smoking and some other medicines can all alter flavour.

Eating less can also change how you experience food. Smaller portions, different food choices and reduced interest in rich or sweet foods may make meals seem blander or odder. This is a perception of food rather than a damaged sense of taste.

A persistent unusual taste in the mouth, such as metallic, bitter or foul, can sometimes point to an underlying condition. We cannot diagnose that from a symptom, so a GP appointment is the right step, especially if you also feel unwell in other ways.

05 · Tasting the medicine

Keeping track of a new symptom

Some people wonder whether a taste in the mouth is linked to the injection. If you notice a new symptom after a dose, note when it started and tell your prescriber.

Keeping a simple record helps. A tracking app such as our free GLPTrackr companion can log doses, symptoms and appetite changes so you can show the pattern at a review.

06 · Reporting and reviews

Reporting a new symptom

Any suspected side effect can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, whether or not it is already listed.19 Reports help regulators spot patterns. A report is not proof that the medicine caused the symptom.

If you stop treatment, tirzepatide takes about four to five weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Do not stop without speaking to your prescriber first.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can Mounjaro cause loss of taste?
A changed sense of taste is listed in the UK patient leaflet as an uncommon side effect (up to 1 in 100 people). The medicine slows stomach emptying and reduces appetite, which can make food feel different, but that is not the same as losing taste. If your taste changes suddenly or persists, tell your prescriber or GP and consider a Yellow Card report.
What are the rare side effects of Mounjaro?
Very common effects (more than 1 in 10 people) include feeling sick, diarrhoea, being sick, stomach pain, constipation, feeling tired and reduced appetite. Uncommon effects (up to 1 in 100) include injection-site pain, a changed sense of taste, a change in skin sensation and slower stomach emptying. Acute pancreatitis is uncommon and a severe allergic reaction is rare. For severe, persistent stomach pain, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat or breathing problems, get medical help straight away. Tell your prescriber about any new symptom, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
Why am I suddenly losing my sense of taste?
Sudden loss of taste has many possible causes, including colds, nasal blockage, dry mouth and other illnesses. A changed sense of taste is an uncommon listed side effect of Mounjaro. Because a sudden change can have causes unrelated to any medicine, see your GP if it is complete or does not settle.
Is loss of taste a side effect of taking Ozempic?
Check that medicine's patient information leaflet, speak to whoever prescribes it, and report suspected side effects through Yellow Card. For Mounjaro, a changed sense of taste is listed in the UK patient leaflet as uncommon. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only.
Why does everything taste weird to me all of a sudden?
A sudden odd taste is often down to a cold, dry mouth, reflux, oral hygiene or another medicine. It can also reflect changes in appetite and eating habits. If it lasts or comes with other symptoms, see your GP, and tell your prescriber if you are on Mounjaro.
How can I get my taste back quickly?
There is no instant fix, because the right step depends on the cause. Drinking enough fluids, good oral hygiene and treating a blocked nose can help where those are the problem. If taste does not return, see your GP rather than relying on home remedies.
Can Mounjaro cause other unexpected changes, like libido or sleep?
Changes in libido and sleepless nights are not listed as side effects in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet. For any new symptom, speak to your prescriber and report it through Yellow Card.
