Can You Take an In-Between Mounjaro Dose Between 2.5mg and 5mg? (October 2026)

No, you cannot take a dose between 2.5mg and 5mg of Mounjaro: the licensed KwikPen strengths are 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg only, and the pen is not designed to deliver anything in between.1 If side effects or pace are the worry, your prescriber can hold a dose for longer within the licence.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro comes in six fixed strengths; there is no pen between 2.5mg and 5mg.
  • The pen is set by the number in the dose window, so you cannot dial a custom amount.
  • Trying to draw off or split a dose means unknown accuracy and no safety data.
  • If 2.5mg feels too little or 5mg too much, ask your prescriber about holding or stepping down within the licence.
  • Never take a double dose to make up an amount.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take a dose between 2.5mg and 5mg?

No. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose pen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Each pen holds four weekly doses of one strength. There is no pen for an in-between amount, and we would not supply or advise one.

The pen is set by turning the dose knob until the correct number shows in the window. You confirm the dose by that number, never by counting clicks. If the window will not turn to a full dose, the pen does not contain enough for one and should not be used for a partial injection.13

02 · Your options

What to do instead

If 2.5mg is no longer enough but 5mg worries you, speak to your prescriber before the next step. The licence already lets the prescriber control the pace: the dose increases after at least four weeks, and your prescriber can hold a dose longer or step down within the licence if side effects are the concern.1

Our prescribing team runs ongoing monthly reviews, so pace changes are a normal part of treatment. Our weight loss clinic explains the wider options.

03 · Standard titration

How the licensed ladder works

Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1

Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.11 Our guides on the in-between dose, converting it to ml and units explain why the pen cannot do this.

04 · Why splitting is unsafe

Why splitting or microdosing is unsafe

Taking smaller or more spread-out doses than the pen is designed to deliver is called microdosing. It is not licensed, not supported by the pen's design and not endorsed by any UK regulator. Altering doses outside the licence means unknown dosing accuracy and no safety data.1

If you have read about getting an in-between dose from a 5mg pen, treat it as outside the licence, and see our note on why clicks are not a measure of dose.13

05 · Injecting and missed doses

Injecting and missed doses

Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site with each dose.13

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1

06 · Pace of results

Is 2.5mg enough to lose weight?

The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.1 Experiences differ widely: some people notice appetite change in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal.

Your prescriber reviews your response and decides whether to hold a dose or move up, so a slower step is a clinical decision, not a do-it-yourself one. If you could be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you use the contraceptive pill, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method (such as condoms) for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I take an in-between dose of Mounjaro between 2.5mg and 5mg?
No. Mounjaro is licensed only in 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg KwikPens, and the pen cannot deliver an amount between them. If you want a gentler step, ask your prescriber about holding your current dose longer or stepping down within the licence.
How do I inject Mounjaro correctly?
Inject under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Use the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else injects. Rotate the site each dose and follow the pen's instructions.
Can you split Mounjaro doses?
No. Splitting or spreading a dose is a form of microdosing, which is not licensed, not supported by the pen's design and not endorsed by any UK regulator. It means unknown dosing accuracy and no safety data. Your prescriber can hold a dose longer or step down within the licence instead.
What happens if I take a double dose of Mounjaro?
Do not do it. The leaflet rule is never to take two doses within 3 days of each other. If you miss a dose, take it within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; after that, skip it and resume on your normal day. If you use more Mounjaro than you should, talk to a doctor immediately.
Can you stay on Mounjaro 2.5mg for longer?
Your prescriber can hold a dose longer within the licence. After at least 4 weeks the dose usually increases to 5mg, but the pace depends on how you respond and tolerate it. The 2.5mg starting dose is about letting your body adjust, so speak to your prescriber if you want to stay on it.
Can I lose weight on 2.5mg of Mounjaro?
Possibly, but losses on 2.5mg are usually modest because it is an adjustment phase. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Some people notice early appetite change, others little until a higher dose. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside diet and activity.
How long does Mounjaro stay in your system?
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.
