A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Brand name is what the box says; the generic name is the active ingredient. Mounjaro is tirzepatide, Wegovy is semaglutide, Saxenda is liraglutide.
  • Mounjaro and Wegovy are once-weekly injections. Saxenda is a daily injection supplied at 6mg/ml.
  • Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss.
  • All of these are prescription-only. Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.

01 · The list

The brand names you will see in the UK

The brand names you are most likely to meet are Mounjaro, Wegovy, Saxenda, Ozempic and, for tablets, Wegovy tablets and Foundayo.

For a wider run-down, see our guide to names of weight loss drugs and the longer UK weight loss medicine names explained.

02 · What to do next

Does the brand name matter to you?

It matters mainly because products with similar names are not interchangeable. Each has its own dose ladder, schedule and licence, so you should never swap one for another without a prescriber. A brand is a starting point for a conversation, not a shopping choice.

If you are weighing injections, our pages on weight loss injection names and weight loss pens names list the pen products side by side. If you are ready to see whether treatment suits you, our weight loss clinic explains the process, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live prices and the consultation.

03 · Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

On cost, a single pen at the starting dose is £169.99 at the standard price, and your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. Prices checked 11 October 2026.

04 · Wegovy and Ozempic

Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide)

Wegovy is the weight management brand of semaglutide. Ozempic is another brand of the same ingredient, licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. Semaglutide is a single-action medicine, which is what distinguishes it from the dual action of tirzepatide.1

Wegovy pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly. Titration steps up after at least four weeks, reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17, which is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18 To see how the two active ingredients compare, read tirzepatide vs semaglutide brand name.

Wegovy's first pen is £99.99 as a first-order price. Check availability at the time of order.

05 · Saxenda and liraglutide

Saxenda and other liraglutide products

Saxenda is a liraglutide product and, unlike Mounjaro or Wegovy, it is a daily injection. Liraglutide, including Saxenda and products such as Erly, is supplied at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre.

06 · Tablet brands

Tablet brands: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo

Wegovy tablets contain oral semaglutide and Foundayo contains orforglipron, so both are options for people who prefer not to inject.2021 Their trial results should not be set against Mounjaro's as if they were head-to-head studies, because different trials used different designs.

For the wider family, read our overview of GLP-1 agonist brand names and brand names of GLP-1 medicines.

07 · Older and non-GLP-1 options

Older and non-GLP-1 options

Other prescription weight loss medicines exist, including tablets such as orlistat, and stimulant-type drugs of the amphetamine family that were used historically.

Stimulant-style products are a different category from injectable medicines such as Mounjaro and Wegovy; see our page on amphetamine drugs for weight loss.

08 · NHS access

What the NHS offers

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

09 · Staying safe buying

Buying safely and reporting problems

All of these weight loss medicines are prescription-only, so treat anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription as a warning sign. Buy from a pharmacy you can find on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878.7

If you notice a new symptom on any of these medicines, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What are the main brand names of weight loss drugs in the UK?
The main brand names are Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide). Wegovy tablets and Foundayo (orforglipron) are oral options. Mounjaro and Wegovy are once-weekly injections, while Saxenda is a daily injection. All are prescription-only, so a prescriber must decide which, if any, suits you.
What weight loss injections are available through the NHS?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP about which product and service apply to you.
What are GLP-1 medications used for?
GLP-1 medicines help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. Brands such as Wegovy and Ozempic are semaglutide products, and Mounjaro's tirzepatide also activates GIP. In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.
What are the common side effects of taking weight loss drugs?
Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Discuss any new or troublesome symptom with your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What is the safest weight-loss drug you can take?
No single drug is safest for everyone, so the answer depends on your health, other medicines and history. Licensed, prescription-only products reviewed by a prescriber are the safe route. A free consultation lets a GPhC-registered prescriber assess suitability before anything is supplied.
Can you drink alcohol while on weight loss injections?
There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule.
Can you smell when someone is on Ozempic?
A noticeable smell is not listed as a side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet. If you notice any new symptom, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.
Is Mounjaro a different drug from Wegovy?
Yes. Mounjaro is tirzepatide and Wegovy is semaglutide. Tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, whereas semaglutide is a single-action GLP-1 medicine. They have different dose ladders, so never swap one for the other without a prescriber's guidance.
