A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • No protein product is required on Mounjaro. Aim for a protein source at every meal, from food first and from shakes where appetite is low.
  • Pick any UK seller that lists every ingredient, shows batch and expiry details and makes no "natural GLP-1" claims.
  • Resistance exercise two or more times a week matters as much as the protein itself for protecting muscle.
  • Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents of prescribed treatment.
  • Mounjaro itself is prescription-only: buy it only from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Where to buy protein on a GLP-1 regimen

The best place to buy protein is any UK seller that is transparent about what is in the product, not one named brand. Supermarkets, high-street pharmacies and health stores, specialist sports nutrition websites and the food aisle are all reasonable. What separates good from poor is the label, the batch and expiry information, and whether the seller sticks to honest claims.

On treatment, appetite falls and meals get smaller. That makes it harder to include a protein source at every meal, which is the habit worth protecting.1 Shakes, yoghurts and similar products are a convenience for those days, not a requirement.

Where you shopSuits you ifWhat to check
Supermarkets (food aisle)You want protein from ordinary food: eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, pulses, tofuPortion size, and whether sauces or fried coatings add fat that sits heavily on a slower-emptying stomach
Supermarket and high-street ready-to-drink shakesYou want something small, cold and quick when you cannot face a mealFull ingredient list, sugar content, and whether it also adds a lot of calories
Pharmacies and health storesYou want a pharmacist to talk to about a supplement alongside your medicinesAsk whether anything interacts with your other medicines, and what the product actually claims
Specialist sports nutrition websitesYou want a wide range of powders and flavours, including unflavoured onesBatch and expiry details, third-party labelling, and avoidance of any "GLP-1 support" marketing that implies it replaces treatment
Online marketplaces and social media sellersRarely the right choiceUnclear sourcing, no traceable batch, and dramatic weight-loss claims

If one row had to be called the safest default, it is food plus a single familiar product from a retailer you already trust. Everything else is preference. Our guide to the best protein for GLP-1 users goes further into food choices.

02 · Honest limits

What a protein product can and cannot do

A protein product can help you reach a protein source at each meal when appetite is low, and nothing more. It does not act on GIP or GLP-1 receptors, it does not suppress appetite the way prescribed treatment does, and it does not replace resistance exercise. Supplements marketed as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.1

Be wary of any page that treats a protein powder as a medicine, a fat burner or a shortcut. Your own result depends on the whole pattern: reduced calories, protein, activity and, if prescribed, the medicine itself.

03 · If you are not yet on treatment

If you also need the medicine itself

If you are researching protein because you are starting or considering Mounjaro, the medicine is a separate, prescription-only purchase. All six doses are in stock. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, against a standard price of £169.99. Every later order gets an automatic £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). Switching from another provider at a higher dose? Your first order at 15mg is £289.99, and the new-customer discount applies at any dose.

Planning a longer horizon? If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year (13 pens) costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, again at standard prices: a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. For other maintenance doses, use that dose's monthly price: £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg and £319.99 at 12.5mg.

Ordering takes three steps. First, complete a free online consultation. A GPhC-registered prescriber then reviews it; payment is taken when you place the order, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Finally, our registered pharmacy dispenses and ships it, with same-day dispatch when you order by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. You can start your free consultation or see our hub on how to buy Mounjaro online. Our full list of weight loss treatments shows the alternatives.

04 · Why protein matters

Why protein matters on a GLP-1 regimen

Protein matters because some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. It is also why the advice gets more important, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults.1 It activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That supports a reduced-calorie diet, which is exactly what the licence assumes.

The catch is that a smaller appetite makes it easy to eat too little protein by default. Meals shrink, and the plate that used to hold chicken, rice and vegetables may end up holding a few forkfuls. A deliberate habit solves this: include a protein source at every meal, even when the meal is small. That is simpler than counting anything, and it works with the way the medicine changes hunger.

There are two levers, and both are needed. The first is adequate protein, with a source at every meal. The second is resistance exercise two or more times a week. Neither a shake nor a gym session on its own does the job. A shake with no strength work gives the body little reason to hold onto muscle, and strength work on too little protein is similarly incomplete.

If you want a personal protein target, ask your prescriber or a pharmacist rather than copying a figure from a social media post. Your prescribing team can reassess this at your monthly reviews.

In SURMOUNT-1, adults taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them, and the protein-and-strength habit is part of that activity-and-diet side of the equation.

05 · Food-first protein

Food-first protein when appetite is low

The most reliable way to get protein on a GLP-1 regimen is to build each meal around a protein source, and to keep meals small and slow. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective: protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.1

Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food. Large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals tend to work better.1 That shapes which protein foods are practical. Eggs, fish, poultry, yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu, beans and lentils all give a protein anchor without needing a huge plate. Grilled, baked, poached or steamed options generally sit better than deep-fried ones.

  • Start the meal with the protein, so the part that matters most is eaten while you are still hungry enough to eat it.
  • Split a meal into two smaller sittings if one plate feels like too much.
  • Keep easy protein ready: boiled eggs, yoghurt pots or tinned fish need almost no effort.
  • Choose soft, moist textures such as scrambled eggs, soups or flaked fish when you feel queasy.
  • Leave very rich sauces and fried coatings for the occasional meal, not the default.

Remember that the aim is a sustainable calorie deficit, not a perfect food list. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so a protein-rich plate that is also very high in calories works against you. Chasing protein through large amounts of cheese, cream or processed meat can overshoot, so food-first does not mean unlimited.

Shopping for this is the easy part. Any large supermarket covers it, and there is no need to buy anything from a specialist website. Where food-first protein is genuinely hard, for example during the first days after a dose increase or on injection days with early side effects, a shake is a sensible bridge. For more food ideas, see our best protein for GLP-1 guide.

If you are struggling to eat anything at all, or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

06 · Choosing protein powders

Choosing protein powders and shakes

Choose the powder or shake you will actually use, from a retailer that publishes a full ingredient list, a batch number and an expiry date. That is a better test than any influencer's pick. Whey, plant blends, collagen blends and ready-to-drink options are all products of the same kind, and personal tolerance matters most.

Here is a practical checklist to use at any retailer:

  • Read the whole ingredient list. Look for added sugar, sweeteners and flavourings, and for botanicals or "metabolic blends" that have nothing to do with protein.
  • Check batch and expiry. A trustworthy seller shows these, and a vague one does not.
  • Notice the claims. A protein product that promises appetite suppression, "GLP-1 support" or dramatic weight-loss claims is selling marketing, not nutrition.
  • Look at the calories. A shake is food. If you are on a reduced-calorie plan it counts, and some ready-to-drink products are surprisingly energy-dense.
  • Think about dairy and allergens. If dairy upsets you, check whether the product has it before you buy.

Oral products, like other oral medicines and supplements, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment because the stomach empties more slowly.1 A practical consequence is that a large, thick shake can feel heavy. Try a small portion first, sip slowly and see how you feel before making it a routine. Thinner, colder drinks are often easier than thick ones on queasy days, though that is a matter of personal comfort rather than a clinical rule.

If you take other medicines, ask a pharmacist before adding something new. This is especially useful if you use insulin or a sulfonylurea, because your doses may need adjusting to avoid low blood sugar. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

Finally, keep a sense of proportion. A shake once or twice a day on the hard days is a tool. A routine in which shakes replace every meal is a different thing, and it is worth discussing with your prescriber.

07 · Supplements and myths

Supplements, "natural GLP-1" claims and unlicensed products

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, and no supplement is an equivalent of it. Eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight, and you should discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.1 That is the whole evidence-based position, and it is shorter than most sellers would like.

People often ask whether there is a natural supplement that works like Mounjaro. There is not. Products sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.1 Berberine, fibre blends, "drops" and similar products are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Our page on GLP-1 drops ingredients explains why the labels on such products deserve a hard look.

The same goes for homemade "Mounjaro drinks" and trending recipes. They have no clinical basis as a replacement for treatment. A drink of that kind is at most a beverage, and coffee rules circulating on social media have no clinical basis either. Coffee and tea are fine on Mounjaro, though strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the deficit to leak.1

Over-the-counter GLP-1 pills do not exist in the sense that adverts imply. Prescription tablets are separate licensed medicines that need a consultation. If a product sold without a consultation or prescription claims to be a GLP-1 medicine, treat it as a red flag.

Retatrutide has no UK licence, and it must not be combined with Mounjaro. If a seller offers retatrutide, treat that offer as a warning sign.

If you notice a new symptom after starting any product or medicine, discuss it with your prescriber or pharmacist. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

08 · Spotting safe sellers

Spotting a trustworthy seller, and avoiding fakes

For protein products, a trustworthy seller shows its identity, its ingredient list and batch details. For the medicine itself, the rule is stricter: only buy Mounjaro from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.712 The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.7

Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation. Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is not operating legitimately, however friendly the listing looks. This matters because sellers of both products often share the same channels, including social posts, marketplaces and "wellness" accounts.

A genuine UK Mounjaro pen comes from a registered pharmacy with a batch number and expiry date, arrives cold-chain packaged, and the solution inside is clear and colourless.1 Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, is past its expiry, or has been above 30°C; an in-use pen must be thrown away after 30 days (not above 30°C). If supply or packaging ever seems wrong, check the pharmacy on the register and contact the pharmacy before injecting.

Genuine UK stock is supplied through Lilly's official distribution to licensed pharmacies. Our supply comes directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution through LillyDirect, with genuine KwikPens and all six doses (2.5mg to 15mg) in stock. You can check our registration, GPhC 9012878, on the GPhC register.

Quick tests for any online seller, protein or medicine:

  • Can you find a registered business identity and contact route?
  • Does the product page show ingredients, batch and expiry?
  • Are the claims plausible, or does it promise dramatic weight-loss claims?
  • For medicines: is a consultation required before supply?

If any answer is no, buy somewhere else. For more on choosing a supplier, see our guide to the best places to buy Mounjaro in the UK.

09 · Hydration and exercise

Hydration, exercise and alcohol alongside protein

Protein only does its job when it is paired with enough fluid and regular strength work. Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual: reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.1 Keep water within reach through the day. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

This matters if you are adding protein shakes, because a shake counts as fluid but not as a substitute for water. A shake that you sip slowly can help on low-appetite days, but it is not a plan for your whole fluid intake.

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle.1 Start where you are and build. Resistance work two or more times a week is the target for protecting muscle, and it can be bodyweight exercises at home, resistance bands or the gym. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

Alcohol deserves a short note. There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule, and many people find their desire for alcohol drops on treatment.1

A realistic week might look like this: protein at every meal, two or three short strength sessions, daily walks, water throughout the day, and a multivitamin if your eating is very low. That is far less glamorous than a shopping basket of powders, and it is what the evidence supports.

If you want to understand the injection side, including where on the body people inject, our page on the best place to inject GLP-1 covers it.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

11 · Mounjaro, cost and access

Mounjaro: eligibility, NHS access and where our service fits

If protein is one part of a wider plan, the medicine is the other, and it has its own eligibility rules. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.

On the NHS, Mounjaro is available, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. The NHS guide to tirzepatide explains the public route.5

With us, the free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Monthly clinical reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support are included, and repeat orders re-check suitability with no auto-shipping. You pay by Visa or Mastercard, or use Klarna and pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Our free GLPTrackr app helps you track your journey, including meals, weight and doses.

Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens cost £143.96 and £339.00 (index checked 11 October 2026). The Mounjaro product page shows live prices for every dose.

If you want a comparison of routes, read our guide on the best place to get Mounjaro for weight loss. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and individual results vary. This page is information, not medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the best place to buy protein for a GLP-1 regimen in the UK?
There is no single best place. Choose a UK seller that shows a full ingredient list, batch number and expiry date, and that avoids dramatic weight-loss claims or "GLP-1 booster" marketing. Supermarkets suit food-first protein, pharmacies suit anyone who wants a pharmacist's view alongside their medicines, and sports nutrition sites suit people wanting more choice. Avoid anonymous marketplace and social media sellers, where sourcing is unclear and claims are often exaggerated.
What is the best protein source for GLP-1 users?
The best source is whichever protein you can eat consistently at every meal. Eggs, fish, poultry, yoghurt, tofu, beans and lentils all work, and smaller, slower meals suit the slower stomach emptying that comes with treatment. Very fatty, fried or sugary food tends to sit heavily. The aim is a protein source at each meal within a reduced-calorie diet, so total calories still matter. Ask your prescriber if you need a personal target.
What is the best protein powder for a Mounjaro diet?
No one powder type is best for everyone, so be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Pick a product you tolerate, from a seller that lists every ingredient, batch and expiry. Check sugar and calories, because a shake is food and counts towards your deficit. Start with a small portion and sip slowly, since oral products may be absorbed more slowly once treatment starts. A pharmacist can check it against your other medicines.
Is there a natural supplement that works like Mounjaro?
No. Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents of Mounjaro and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, and it is a licensed prescription medicine. Low-cost supplements are available without clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. If you want treatment, a free consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber is the safe route to find out whether it is suitable for you.
Is a multivitamin worthwhile on a GLP-1 regimen?
What is reasonable is a standard daily multivitamin as a safety net while eating less, and you should discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Be sceptical of dramatic weight-loss claims, and remember that diet, protein and activity do the real work alongside any treatment.
How do I get enough protein on a GLP-1 when I have no appetite?
Aim for a protein source at every meal, even if the meal is small. Eat the protein first, split meals into two smaller sittings, and keep easy options ready, such as boiled eggs, yoghurt or tinned fish. A small ready-to-drink shake can bridge hard days. Protein matters because some rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue. If you cannot eat or keep fluids down, contact your clinical team rather than pushing through.
Do I need protein shakes on Mounjaro?
No. No supplement is required with Mounjaro, and shakes are a convenience, not a necessity. Food-first protein at every meal is the aim, with resistance exercise two or more times a week to protect muscle. Shakes become useful when appetite is very low, for example after a dose increase. If you use them, check the calories, because they count towards your reduced-calorie plan, and sip slowly if you feel queasy.
Does the homemade Mounjaro drink work?
No. Homemade "Mounjaro drinks" and similar recipes have no clinical basis as replacements for prescribed treatment. Mounjaro works by activating GIP and GLP-1 receptors, and no kitchen recipe does the same. Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents. A drink may still be a pleasant way to take fluids, but it will not act like the medicine. If you want treatment, start with a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, via our consultation page.
Where should I buy Mounjaro itself, rather than protein?
Buy it only from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites, and only after a consultation. We are GPhC-registered (9012878) and supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, and all six doses are in stock. See the Mounjaro pen page for live prices and the consultation.
