01 · The short answer
What is the best food to eat on Mounjaro?
The best food to eat on Mounjaro is whatever gets you enough protein, fibre and fluid while your appetite is lower. Mounjaro helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 That is helpful for a calorie deficit. It also means every mouthful needs to count, and big or greasy plates can feel uncomfortable.
A simple plate works for most people: a palm-sized protein source, a generous portion of vegetables, and a modest serving of wholegrain or starchy carbohydrate. Good protein choices include eggs, fish, chicken, turkey, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu, lentils and beans. Good fibre choices include oats, brown rice, wholemeal bread, pulses, fruit and vegetables. These are everyday practical examples rather than a prescribed list: the aim is to prioritise protein, vegetables and fibre.
For a deeper look at weekly meal structure, see our guides on the Mounjaro diet and the best meals to eat on Mounjaro.
02 · At a glance
Quick food guide for Mounjaro
| Food group | Why it helps | Practical examples |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | Helps protect muscle while appetite and intake drop | Eggs, fish, poultry, Greek yoghurt, tofu, lentils |
| Vegetables and fibre | Fills the plate for few calories and supports regular digestion | Salad, cooked vegetables, oats, pulses, wholegrains |
| Fluids | Less fluid comes from food when appetite is low | Water, herbal tea, diluted squash, clear soups |
| Limit: fatty and fried | Often feels worse on a slower-emptying stomach | Deep-fried takeaways, very rich sauces, greasy snacks |
| Limit: very sugary | Often feels worse and adds calories quickly | Sweets, sugary drinks, large desserts |
This is practical guidance, not a strict diet. If you are still deciding whether treatment is right for you, our weight loss clinic explains the options, and you can see the Mounjaro pen prices and consultation when you are ready.
03 · Your next step
Is this relevant to me, and what do I do next?
If you are already on Mounjaro, start with the one change that matters most: put a protein source on every plate, then add vegetables. If you are struggling to eat at all, read our page on being unable to eat on Mounjaro and speak to your prescribing team.
If you are not yet on treatment, remember that Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1
04 · Protein at every meal
Protein at every meal: the one habit that matters most
Protein is the first thing to prioritise on Mounjaro: include a protein source at every meal.13 The reason is muscle. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. Appetite is lower on treatment, so protein is easy to skip without noticing, and the effect matters more, not less, as the dose rises.
In practice that means building each meal around a protein rather than adding it as an afterthought. At breakfast that might be eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese or a protein-containing porridge made with milk. At lunch, think tinned fish, chicken, turkey, hummus with pulses, or tofu. In the evening, fish, lean meat, lentil dishes, beans or tempeh work well. These are examples of everyday foods rather than a prescribed list, and you can choose what you enjoy.
When appetite is very low, eating the protein part of the meal first is a sensible habit. You will often feel full before you reach the rest of the plate, so make sure the most useful part is not the part left behind. Small, frequent protein-containing snacks, such as a yoghurt or a boiled egg, can also help if full meals feel like too much.
Vegetarian and vegan eaters can meet the same aim with tofu, tempeh, edamame, lentils, chickpeas, beans and dairy or fortified alternatives where suitable. The principle is identical: a protein source at each meal, whichever form suits you.
Protein is only one of two levers for muscle. The other is resistance exercise two or more times a week.13 Food and training work together, and neither fully replaces the other.
You do not need to weigh every gram or track every meal to follow this advice. A useful check is simple: look at your plate and ask whether there is a clear protein source on it. If not, add one before anything else. Many people find this one question does more good than any elaborate meal plan, particularly in the weeks after a dose increase when hunger changes again.
If you want ideas for what a day of protein-led eating can look like, our guide to what to eat while on Mounjaro goes through breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in more detail.
05 · Vegetables, fibre and carbohydrates
Vegetables, fibre and carbohydrates
Vegetables and fibre are the second priority after protein.13 They add volume and variety to meals that are smaller than you are used to, and they keep your plate balanced when appetite pushes you towards whatever feels easiest. Regular fibre also helps your digestion keep moving, which many people find is a challenge when they eat less overall.
Good everyday fibre sources include oats, wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, quinoa, lentils, chickpeas, beans, fruit and a wide range of vegetables. You do not need exotic ingredients. Frozen vegetables are an excellent standby when you do not feel like cooking, because they keep well and cook quickly.
Carbohydrates are not the enemy. The aim is a sensible portion of slower, fibre-rich carbohydrate rather than cutting them out. Because the stomach empties more slowly, a large pile of any food can sit heavily, so serve carbohydrates in modest portions beside your protein and vegetables. If a meal feels too much, leave the extra starch rather than the protein.
Fruit is fine. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, so there is no need to avoid fruit because of its natural sugar.13 Whole fruit is more filling than juice, and pairing it with yoghurt or nuts adds protein and staying power. Our guide to the best fruit to eat on Mounjaro covers this in detail.
Introduce extra fibre gradually if you have not been eating much of it, and drink fluids alongside it. A sudden jump in fibre with little fluid can leave you feeling bloated or uncomfortable, which is the opposite of what you want. If you are prone to bloating, cooked vegetables are often gentler than large raw salads, though this is a matter of personal tolerance rather than a rule.
A useful way to think about the plate is in proportions rather than numbers: protein and vegetables should take up most of the space, with a smaller serving of fibre-rich carbohydrate. Healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocado are fine in moderate amounts, but very rich or greasy dishes are the ones that tend to feel worse.
Eating regularly also matters. Skipping meals because you are not hungry can leave you with too little protein and fibre by the end of the day. Small, planned meals are often easier to manage than waiting for hunger that may not arrive.
06 · Foods to limit
Foods to limit on Mounjaro
No food is banned on Mounjaro, but many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly.13 That is the whole rule. There is no secret list of forbidden items.
The practical lesson is to notice how foods make you feel. Before treatment you might have eaten a greasy takeaway without a second thought. On Mounjaro the same meal can bring nausea, heaviness, reflux or discomfort that lingers, because the food stays in the stomach longer. If that happens, it is a signal to choose a lighter option next time, not a reason to feel guilty.
Can you eat McDonald's on Mounjaro? Yes, nothing is prohibited. But a large fried, high-fat meal is exactly the sort of food many people tolerate poorly, and it adds a lot of calories for a small amount of food, which works against a calorie deficit. If you do eat fast food, a smaller portion, a grilled option and water instead of a sugary drink is a sensible compromise.
Can I eat crisps on Mounjaro? Yes. Crisps are not forbidden, but they are fatty, easy to overeat, low in protein and low in fibre. A small portion occasionally is fine. Regularly replacing meals with snack foods leaves little room for the protein and vegetables you need.
Can you eat spicy food on Mounjaro? Spicy food is not a listed restriction. Some people find it aggravates nausea or reflux while the stomach is emptying more slowly, particularly in the days after an injection or a dose increase. If spicy food sits badly with you, ease off and try again later. If it does not bother you, there is no reason to avoid it.
Sugary food and drinks are the other area to watch. Very sugary items can feel unpleasant for some people and they deliver calories quickly without filling you up. Sugary drinks in particular are an easy place for the deficit to leak, so water, tea or sugar-free options are usually better day to day.
Large portions deserve a special mention. Because you feel full sooner, finishing a full plate out of habit can leave you uncomfortably stuffed. Serve smaller portions, eat slowly, and stop when you feel satisfied. You can always have more later if you are genuinely hungry. Smaller, slower meals work better than the old habit of clearing the plate.
Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit rather than a perfect food list.13 Occasional treats are part of a sustainable approach, and rigid rules often backfire. Focus on what you eat most of the time rather than any single meal.
07 · Settling an upset stomach
What to eat to settle your stomach on Mounjaro
When your stomach feels unsettled, the most helpful approach is small, plain, low-fat meals eaten slowly. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13 Knowing that this is expected can make it easier to ride out.
Plain foods are usually easier to tolerate than rich ones. Toast, plain rice, porridge, bananas, plain yoghurt, boiled or scrambled eggs, soup and simple chicken are all gentle choices that many people find manageable. Is toast good for an upset stomach? Plain toast is bland and low in fat, so many people tolerate it, but it is not a treatment. Is Greek yoghurt good for an upset stomach? Plain Greek yoghurt is mild and protein-rich, and many people manage it well, although individual tolerance differs. Eggs and toast are a reasonable, gentle protein-and-carbohydrate combination if you are feeling delicate.
What is the gentlest food on the stomach? There is no single answer, because tolerance varies. The common thread is plain, low in fat, not too sweet, not too big. Cold or room-temperature foods are sometimes easier than hot, strongly scented meals.
A few habits help regardless of the food. Eat slowly, stop as soon as you feel full, avoid lying down straight after eating, and keep fluids going in small sips. Avoid very large meals and very greasy dishes while you feel unwell, because a slower-emptying stomach makes both worse.
If you are having diarrhoea, fluids matter even more. Vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class of medicine.13 Keep sipping fluids and eat simple foods as you are able.
If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. For severe or persistent stomach pain, get medical help straight away. Our guide to being unable to eat explains when to seek help. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Many people choose a weekend morning for their injection so that early side effects fall on days off, which gives you flexibility to eat lightly and rest.13 Eating something small before you inject is optional, since the injection can be taken with or without food.
08 · Fluids, coffee and alcohol
Fluids, coffee and alcohol
Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual, because reduced appetite means less fluid from food.13 Keep water within reach through the day and sip regularly rather than waiting until you are thirsty. Water, herbal tea, sugar-free squash and clear soups all count.
Hydration is also your safety net during side effects. Vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, so those are the moments to be most careful. If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away rather than waiting it out.
Coffee and tea. There is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine.13 Two practical notes apply. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, so have it with food if that happens to you. And high-calorie coffee drinks, such as sweet syrupy lattes, are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. Plain coffee, or a small amount of milk, is the lower-calorie route. The "coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis, so you do not need to time your coffee around your injection.
Alcohol. There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals.13 If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule.
In practice, that means sipping slowly, eating before or alongside a drink, and alternating alcohol with water. You may find you feel the effects sooner than before. Pay attention to how you feel the next day, because alcohol can worsen nausea and dehydration at the same time.
Sugary soft drinks and juices deserve a quick note. They provide calories without filling you up, and they can feel unpleasant when your stomach is sensitive. Swapping to water or sugar-free alternatives is one of the simplest changes you can make.
A practical routine is a glass of water with each meal, a bottle at your desk, and a drink by the bed. Little habits like these are easier to sustain than a target you have to calculate, and they quietly protect you on the days when eating is difficult.
09 · Eating through the dose steps
How your eating changes as the dose goes up
Your appetite will not stay the same throughout treatment, so your eating approach should adapt. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week, and this starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.13 Experiences differ widely: some people notice appetite change in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal.13
After at least four weeks the dose can increase to 5mg, and then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of four-week intervals, up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1 Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and higher is not automatically better. Each step can change how hungry you feel and how well you tolerate certain foods.
In the early weeks on 2.5mg, there is usually no need to change much. Focus on building the habits that will matter later: protein at every meal, vegetables, fluids and smaller portions. This is the ideal time to practise, because appetite suppression is usually gentler and it is easier to experiment.
As the dose rises and appetite falls, protein becomes more important and more difficult. Plan meals ahead, keep easy protein options to hand, and do not rely on hunger to tell you when to eat. After each dose increase, expect a few days where you feel fuller than usual and may be more sensitive to rich food. Keep meals light and small until you know how you are responding.
The days after your injection are often when side effects are strongest. Many people plan lighter, plainer meals for those days and return to their usual pattern as the week goes on. Because you can inject at any time of day, with or without food, you can choose the timing that suits your routine.13
Keep realistic expectations. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, and most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by the trend rather than individual weigh-ins.13 Early loss includes water weight, so a quick drop in week one tells you little.
Your prescriber reviews your response. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.13 Good eating habits are what carry over if you ever stop treatment. Our guide to the best things to eat on GLP-1 medicines covers the wider class.
10 · Exercise and muscle
Food, exercise and protecting muscle
What you eat is only half of protecting your results; the other half is movement. Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra.13 Nothing special is required. The evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle.
Resistance exercise two or more times a week, alongside adequate protein, is the combination that protects lean tissue.13 That could be gym sessions, home workouts with bands or bodyweight, or anything that makes your muscles work against resistance. If you are new to exercise, start where you are and build gradually. A short session you will repeat beats an ambitious plan you abandon.
On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. A gentle walk is better than nothing, and you do not need to push through nausea. Listen to your body, eat something small and plain if you need to, and return to your usual routine when you feel better.
Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment, which is another reason to build the habit now.13 The eating habits you form on treatment, such as protein-led meals, sensible portions and regular fluids, are the ones most worth keeping.
How to speed up weight loss with Mounjaro? There is no trick that safely speeds it up, and weight loss is gradual by design. The levers that matter are protein at every meal, vegetables and fibre, enough fluids, resistance exercise and regular moderate activity, taking your dose on schedule, and giving it time. Do not stretch, split or alter doses to try to get more out of a pen. That is outside the licence, with unknown dosing accuracy and no safety data.13 If progress feels slow, discuss it with your prescriber instead.
Healthy food, movement and sleep all support the medicine, but they work over months. Judge by the trend and focus on habits rather than perfection. If you are considering treatment, our expert food tips offer further practical ideas, and our weight loss clinic can explain how an online consultation works.
Finally, remember that Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice, so speak to your prescriber about anything that worries you. NHS access is being phased in over several years, and many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.4
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
