Cheaper is not the same as better value

03 · Tablets and safety

Are weight loss pills safer than injections?

Neither format is automatically safer. Both licensed GLP-1 tablets cause mainly digestive side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.2223 Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine; Foundayo has no food or water rules. A prescriber checks which suits your health and other medicines. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

In OASIS 4, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 In ATTAIN-1, people on the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4%, compared with 0.9% on placebo.23 No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so separate trial results should not be set against each other. Individual results vary.

Are weight loss pills better than jabs?
Neither is better for everyone. Licensed GLP-1 tablets and injections are all prescription medicines with their own trial results, and no trial compares Mounjaro with either tablet. What works like Ozempic but is cheaper?
No supplement works like Ozempic; products such as berberine are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. Licensed alternatives include Wegovy, Saxenda, orlistat and the new GLP-1 tablets, each with different results. A prescriber can advise which suits you.

What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, is past its expiry, or has been above 30°C. Use it alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
