Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. Famotidine works in a different way, by blocking histamine receptors that trigger acid production.
These are not instant relief medicines. They usually take a few days to reach full effect. An antacid or alginate can be used alongside them for breakthrough symptoms. If your symptoms have not improved after the course your prescriber recommends, see your GP.
