Accidentally Took a Double Dose of Mounjaro? What to Do Now

If you accidentally took a double dose of Mounjaro, do not inject again, and talk to a doctor immediately. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so effects can linger. Do not take another dose until a clinician tells you when. If you feel seriously unwell, get medical help straight away. Guidance current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Do not take any further injection until a clinician has told you when to restart.
  • If you use more Mounjaro than you should, talk to a doctor immediately, even if you feel fine.
  • Tirzepatide stays in the body for days, so side effects from a double dose can last longer than usual.
  • The licensed rule is clear: never take two doses within 3 days of each other.
  • Report the mistake to your prescriber, and you can also report side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · Act today

What to do right now after a double dose

Stop and do not inject again. Contact your prescriber, your pharmacist or the NHS urgent advice line and tell them exactly what you took, which strength, and when. If you ordered through us, our prescribing team can review your situation, and our support team is reachable using the contact details on our site.

Sip fluids regularly while you wait for advice. If you cannot keep fluids down, or you feel seriously unwell, get medical help straight away rather than waiting.

Do not try to "balance" the mistake by skipping doses or changing the pen yourself. Ask the clinician when your next injection should be. For missed doses, the rule is: if more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other.

02 · Your situation

Does the strength matter: 2.5mg, 5mg or 10mg?

Yes, so always tell the clinician which strength you took. The licensed ladder runs from 2.5mg up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, with steps of at least four weeks between increases.1

In every case the next step is the same: speak to a clinician today, with the pen and the box to hand.

03 · What to expect

What to expect over the next days

Expect the usual Mounjaro effects, possibly stronger. The commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after an injection, and they usually settle.13

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 That is why a clinician's advice matters more than a quick fix. If symptoms are severe, persistent or worrying, speak to your clinical team. If you have severe, persistent stomach pain, chest pain, fainting, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away. Our guide on what happens if you double dose Mounjaro goes into more detail.

04 · How it happens

How double doses happen, and how to avoid them

Most double doses come from forgetting that you had already injected, or from mixing up the injection day. Set a recurring phone reminder, and note each injection straight away. Our guide to taking Mounjaro a day early covers the related early-dose situation.

If you need to change your injection day, you can, as long as at least 3 days have passed since your last dose.1 Other related reading includes accidental double dose of Mounjaro and Mounjaro double dose.

05 · Reporting and review

Reporting it and getting back on track

Tell your prescriber about the mistake so your record is accurate, and you can report any side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Your prescriber will tell you when to restart and at which dose. Do not assume you should move up or down a strength on your own.

At EverydayMeds, ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are part of the service, and repeat orders re-check suitability. If you want to look at your treatment, see the Mounjaro pen prices and consultation page. A more detailed overview is in our guide on taking too much Mounjaro in the UK.

06 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Start your free consultation

Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.

Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What should I do if I accidentally took two doses of Mounjaro?
Do not inject again. Talk to a doctor immediately, and tell them the strength you took and when. Sip fluids regularly, and get medical help straight away if you feel seriously unwell or cannot keep fluids down. Ask the clinician when your next dose should be.
Can I take a double dose of 2.5mg Mounjaro?
No. A double dose is not a licensed way to take Mounjaro, even at 2.5mg. The licensed ladder steps up only after at least four weeks, and your prescriber decides the pace. If it has already happened, speak to a clinician today rather than waiting to see how you feel.
How long will side effects last after a double dose?
Side effects are most likely just after a dose, and the medicine clears slowly. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, and after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. Nothing speeds this up. Mild nausea and tiredness are the commonest early effects, but if you have severe, persistent stomach pain or signs of a severe allergic reaction, get medical help straight away.
Should I skip my next Mounjaro dose after a double dose?
Ask a clinician before your next injection rather than deciding alone. The licensed rule is never to take two doses within 3 days of each other. Your prescriber will tell you when to restart and whether your dose needs reviewing, based on the strength you took.
Is it dangerous to take double Mounjaro 5mg or 10mg?
If you use more Mounjaro than you should, talk to a doctor immediately. Speak to your prescriber, pharmacist or the NHS urgent advice line today, and get medical help straight away if you feel seriously unwell.
How can I stop it happening again?
Pick one injection day and set a recurring reminder. Record each injection straight away, and check the dose number in the pen window every time. Each KwikPen holds four weekly doses. If you want to move your day, wait at least 3 days between doses and tell your prescriber.
