Different strengths of the same medicine can carry different prices, and the relationship between them is not proportional. A higher strength is not automatically double the price of a lower one.

More importantly, strength is not something to select on price. Which strength is appropriate for you is decided during the clinical assessment. Your prescriber will determine the appropriate treatment, and the price of a strength is not a reason to ask for it.

The Branded and Generic Gap

Sildenafil is the active substance in Viagra. A UK generic must have the same active substance as the reference medicinal product, the same pharmaceutical form, and must have been shown to be bioequivalent to it before it can be licensed at all.

The price difference does not by itself indicate a difference in clinical effectiveness. Licensed generic sildenafil must meet regulatory requirements, including bioequivalence to the reference product, and it is usually available at a lower price.

While a patent is in force, one supplier makes the medicine, and the price reflects the cost of development and the absence of competition. Once the patent expired, other companies could license their own versions through a shorter route, because the original evidence package had already established that the substance works. 2. Estimate your real usage. Not your best case, your typical month
3. Multiply out. Per tablet price times tablets per month times twelve

A Worked Example

Two cautions on using it. The pack you choose should be the one you were prescribed, not the one with the best unit economics. And if delivery is charged separately by any supplier you are comparing, add twelve months of it before you decide.

Value for Money

Value for money in prescription medicine is not the same as a low price, and treating them as identical is where people get caught out.

Four things belong in the calculation:
