What to Expect at a Higher Strength or Maintenance Dose
Side effects. Common side effects of Mounjaro include nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, vomiting, reduced appetite and injection site reactions such as rashes or swelling. These symptoms can become more noticeable after a dose increase and may improve as your body adjusts, although everyone responds differently.
Less common but more serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and dehydration, particularly if vomiting or diarrhoea continues. Low blood sugar can also occur, particularly if Mounjaro is used with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Hair loss has also been reported during treatment and may be associated with weight loss rather than being a direct effect of tirzepatide.
Contraception. MHRA advice issued in June 2025 recommends additional or non oral contraception for four weeks after starting tirzepatide and for four weeks after each increase in strength. Tirzepatide can delay gastric emptying, which may affect the absorption of oral contraceptives. If you use the oral contraceptive pill and have recently increased your dose to 10mg, speak to your prescriber about the appropriate contraception for you.
Rate of weight change. Weight loss does not necessarily happen at the same rate throughout treatment. Some people may notice their progress slows over time. Clinical studies show that tirzepatide can support weight reduction when used alongside dietary and lifestyle changes, but individual results vary.
In the SURMOUNT 1 trial, the mean reduction of around 20 per cent at the highest dose was measured over 72 weeks. This is a study average and should not be treated as a prediction of what any individual will lose.
When to seek medical advice. Contact your prescriber, GP or NHS 111 if you experience severe or persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it spreads to your back, ongoing vomiting or signs of dehydration, symptoms that may indicate low blood sugar, or any side effect that concerns you. What Mounjaro for Weight Loss Is
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and is made by Eli Lilly. It is supplied in the KwikPen device. The 10mg strength means that each weekly dose contains 10mg of tirzepatide.
Tirzepatide works on two hormone receptors called glucose dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP 1. These receptors are involved in appetite regulation, feelings of fullness and blood glucose control. Tirzepatide also slows gastric emptying, which can affect how quickly food leaves the stomach.
In clinical studies, including SURMOUNT 5, tirzepatide was associated with significant average weight reduction when used alongside dietary and lifestyle measures. In the 72 week SURMOUNT 5 study, mean weight reduction was 20.2 per cent with tirzepatide compared with 13.7 per cent with semaglutide. These are average results from a clinical study and do not predict how much weight any individual person will lose.
Tirzepatide can also affect blood glucose regulation. Individual responses can vary, and your prescriber can help you understand whether Mounjaro remains appropriate based on your health, treatment response and any other medicines you take.
Eligibility
For weight management, licensed criteria generally include a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above where a weight related health condition is present, such as hypertension (high blood pressure), dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
