Common Side Effects and Management Strategies
Understanding Viagra Side Effects
Viagra (sildenafil) may cause side effects in some men, though many experience none at all. The frequency and severity of side effects often depend on the dose, individual sensitivity, and other medications you may be taking. Both branded Viagra and generic sildenafil contain the same active ingredient, so side effect profiles are identical.
Most Common Side Effects
Headaches affect approximately 15% of men taking Viagra and typically develop within 1-2 hours of taking the medication. These are usually mild to moderate and resolve as the medication clears from your system. Staying hydrated and taking paracetamol may help manage headache symptoms.
Facial flushing occurs in about 10% of users, causing redness and warmth in the face and neck area. This effect is temporary and usually subsides within 2-3 hours. Avoiding alcohol and staying in cooler environments can help reduce discomfort.
Nasal congestion affects around 4% of men, causing a blocked or stuffy nose. This side effect typically resolves naturally but can be managed with saline nasal sprays if problematic.
Less Common Side Effects
Indigestion or heartburn may occur in approximately 7% of users. Taking Viagra on an empty stomach or avoiding fatty meals beforehand can help reduce this risk. If indigestion persists, antacids may provide relief.
Visual disturbances, including slight colour tinting or increased light sensitivity, affect fewer than 3% of men. These effects are temporary but should be reported to your prescriber if they become concerning or persistent.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Whilst serious side effects are rare, certain symptoms require immediate medical attention. An erection lasting longer than 4 hours (priapism) is a medical emergency requiring urgent treatment to prevent permanent damage.
Sudden vision loss or hearing loss, though extremely rare, requires immediate medical assessment. Severe allergic reactions, including difficulty breathing or swelling of the face and throat, need emergency treatment.
Minimising Side Effects
Starting with the lowest effective dose (usually 50mg) helps assess your tolerance. Your prescriber may adjust the dose to 25mg if side effects are problematic, or increase to 100mg if the medication is well-tolerated but insufficiently effective.
Taking Viagra approximately one hour before sexual activity, avoiding large or fatty meals beforehand, and limiting alcohol consumption can help reduce the likelihood of side effects whilst maintaining effectiveness.
