About Cystitis

Cystitis is a common type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that causes inflammation of the bladder. It’s most frequently caused by bacteria — typically E. coli — entering the urethra and moving up into the bladder. While it can affect anyone, cystitis is much more common in women due to anatomical differences such as a shorter urethra.

Common symptoms include:

  • A burning or stinging sensation when urinating
  • Needing to pee more often or with urgency
  • Cloudy, strong-smelling or dark urine
  • Discomfort or pressure in the lower abdomen
  • Feeling generally unwell, tired, or mildly feverish

Cystitis is usually triggered by:

  • Sexual activity
  • Poor toilet hygiene (e.g. wiping back to front)
  • Use of perfumed products in the intimate area
  • Tight clothing or non-breathable underwear
  • Hormonal changes (e.g. during menopause or pregnancy)

Most mild cases can resolve with hydration and rest, but prescription treatment is often recommended, especially if symptoms persist beyond 48 hours. Left untreated, cystitis can occasionally lead to more serious infections like kidney infections, so prompt care is important.

At EveryDayMeds, we offer fast, effective, and discreet treatment for cystitis, with UK-registered pharmacists reviewing every case. Whether it’s your first UTI or a recurrent issue, we’re here to help you feel better — quickly and confidently.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about this clinic

What is cystitis and what causes it?

Cystitis is a bladder infection, usually caused by bacteria like E. coli. It’s more common in women and can be triggered by sex, not emptying the bladder fully, perfumed products, or hormonal changes.

What are the symptoms of cystitis?

Common symptoms include burning when urinating, needing to go more often, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, lower stomach pain, and feeling unwell. Blood in urine or back pain may signal a kidney infection — seek medical help if this occurs.

How is cystitis treated?

Antibiotics like Nitrofurantoin or Trimethoprim are standard treatments. Pain relief and plenty of fluids can also help. If symptoms last more than 48 hours or get worse, antibiotics are usually needed.

How quickly will treatment work?

Most feel better within 1–2 days of starting antibiotics. Finish the full course, drink lots of water, and avoid sex until symptoms clear. See a GP if symptoms persist after 3 days.

What if I get cystitis frequently?

Frequent UTIs may be due to hormones, anatomy, or lifestyle. Management options include low-dose or post-sex antibiotics, vaginal oestrogen, and hygiene or product changes. Speak to a healthcare professional for long-term strategies.

Can I treat cystitis without seeing a GP?

Yes — uncomplicated cystitis can be treated via our quick online consultation. A UK pharmacist or prescriber will assess your case and, if suitable, send medication discreetly and promptly.
